Title: In A Graphics Site, I Want....

Roswenth - July 29, 2008 11:58 AM (GMT)
This is somewhat a plea of frustration at the amassed graphics sites out there which seem to care more about their staff and 'elite' members than people who are trying to learn or just need help. Another discussion prompted this poll, and I wanted to see what others thought.

Feel free to list additional wishes in your responses.

(I meant to put 1 choice, but this works too! I need to stop posting right after I get up! LOL)

Well, long story short, I suck at graphics. I have tried, on multiple occasions to *not* suck, but ...that never works out. So I voted mainly for a place that will fill requests in a timely fashion. I can create a board completely by myself and wouldn't mind running a board completely by myself, if I knew that I had a graphics site that wouldn't mind filling my requests, and that will have them for me, when i need them.

Everything else, I would like to be geared towards graphics newbies, which would be awesome. Other places I have been are way focused on getting people up to that 'elite' rank, and it becomes almost comical to me personally how people are like, "Hey, am I ______ yet? Hey, look at my portfolio. Hey, *poke* *poke* *poke*"

And also a community type setting. RPG-D, has a community setting. Admins can hang out here and get ideas about their sites, and non admins can also hang out here, to learn how to become a better writer and even member.

I understand that not everywhere can be a RPG-D, and that graphics sites are...well...ultimately graphics sites, but I feel bad when my first or second post on a graphics site is a request. Makes me feel like I haven't contributed, and am just like a leech on their little community. (hence the reason I don't request... >.< vicious cycle)

A site that's welcoming and not snobbish
A rankless site that doesn't focus on their elite members
Something that had both graphics and skins (one-stop shop)
Something that has more original styles and not just a few
A site with a good help section

^ I voted for those plus the last one.

I want a place that is friendly, helpful and doesn't judge people based upon how well they can copy others. I want a graphics site that not only preaches creativity but actually upholds creativity.

Can I ask maybe a stupid question? What is the point of colorizations anyway? I mean, people desaturate pictures to then recolor them, often making them look exactly like what they could using selective coloring? Is there really a point to that?

I’ve never understood colorizations. Maybe there is something about them that I am missing. But then again I feel like whenever I try to get involved in a graphic site… I feel like I am an outsider anyway.

I want a place that isn’t snobbish and that encourages people not discourages.

I chose a site that's rankless, and one that gives help and whatnot. Now, I've never actually dealt with a graphics site before as I kinda know what I'm doing usually, but if I were to seek one out, I'd want it to be pretty fair to people - no "I'm better than you because my member rank says so" crap. What I would really like to see is help with not only graphics, but CSS as well - sites that would not only give helpful tutorials and whatnot, but that would also provide CSS help to show you how to do those elusive websites that I see all over the place (or does that exist, already? XD). Either way, friendly and helpful wins my attention over a site that has elitist members.

Useful when you are recolouring a black and white image. However, colourisations make colours more vibrant, where fiddling with brightness and contrast would not help. They help the graphic leap off the page and are useful when you are faced with a grainy or otherwise bad quality image.

I just want a graphics site that properly regulates tutorials. I want tutorials on varying techniques, not millions of tutorials on how to make specific sigs/banners/etc.

- Tutorials on the basics of a programme; where all the important stuff is and what everything does
- How to use colour/light/shade
- Composition
- How to cut out images and combine them with others or backgrounds so they look natural
- Use of fonts, shadows and bevels
- Borders: How much, what colour and when?
- Image sizes

etc.

Also more opportunities to showcase fonts. I think a graphics forum would work better without ranks--just giving one another the benefit of experience and passing on the techniques.

Well, I know that in old shows, such as I Love Lucy, they colorize a lot of the pictures for merchandise. And that's reasonable, because the pics were b/w to begin with.

But to turn a pic that is in color to b/w, and then make it color again? Yeah, that's just a "Neener Neener, I can do this and you can't!" It's really silly.

I would like to see a site that has a lot of resources. I am a freak when it comes to resources - I say, the more the merrier! Then again, I'm pretty picky when it comes to resources. I would also like to see some good graphic artists make tutorials on a graphic site. They know what they're doing - most of the time, I see on graphic sites the intermediates making tuts. Which is fine but...I would like to learn from the best, you know? I'm not saying ok graphic artists shouldn't make tuts, I would just like to see really good graphic artists make MORE tuts, but not to see LESS tuts.
And I would like to see a friendly community where you don't have to kiss the staff's ass to be ranked higher. Seriously, that's annoying.
