Title: Those Porn Site Posters.
Description: Grrrrrrrrr, I hate them!
EliteGirl - July 28, 2008 08:25 PM (GMT)
Seriously. If people wanted to look at those sites, they would. And there are people like that out there. I AM NOT ONE OF THEM! Why post those sites on the RPG Directory?!?! I'm sure I'm not the only roleplayer who doesn't want to see that stuff. I've reported three posts about porn sites, and will do it again. Posters who are like the porn site posters annoy me. A TON.

The thing with bots is that they don't really seem to actually -look- at the places they're posting at and see if it's appropriate for them to post. They just...register and post, or sometimes they just post as a guest.
If they can find a message board to post their ads on, they do it. :| They don't care about WHERE they're posting, unfortunately.

We all share your frustration, EliteGirl.
We really, really do.
I've never understood pron advertisements .. I mean, if people want to look at it, they'll go looking for it. Eye raping us with it isn't helping your business. It's just making people hate you more.
Idk, there could be an advantage to it, but generally, I think all pop-ups and all bots are kind of pointless these days. No one pays much attention to them, other than just getting PO'd.

They just like annoying people; they like to disturb people. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do. x.x

Very true, December. It's the same way on YouTube as well.
It makes me angry seeing that kind of behavior on the Internet.
But unfortanutely, it can't be stopped.

After banning a couple of ISPs (one German, one Ukrainian, both notorious spam hosters), I've been spam-free for two days. *knock wood* Of course, it sucks for legitimate users of those ISPs, but mine is a fairly small board.

I remember someone on ASMM had the idea that we should find porn board and spam them with RPG ads. That way they shall learn!

Hey, I resent being grouped under the "all" moniker. I'm perfectly willing to accept the better (read: hotter) ones for what they are before deleting theem.
And Wilde, that's a terrible idea. So let's say we find the Playboy forums, if they exist(?), and spam them. What the hell does that accomplish? Us pissing off Playboy forumgoers? The problem is spambots, and they don't exactly congregate and chat on a random porn board.
(I have no idea if Playboy actually has forums, but let's pretend they do to illustrate my point.)

Unfortunately this is one of the draw-backs of using an outdated software. :-/ Security holes are everywhere in Invision Power Board 1.3

Most of the porn ads seem to be popping up in the "Teen Life" forum, probably because 'teen' is one of those keywords in pornos. =/ As for the random product ads, like for medication and green tea... IDK, lol.

It was a joke.

They are really annoying. I'm a staff member on another site too and on there we went through a bout of having loads... Sometimes your the only staff member online and have to deal with them...
Really annoys me actually. Especially when you think that 13 year olds, or perhaps younger go around browsing boards.

That was hilarious. I nearly peed.
I think someone did that without telling us, Wilde. That would explain all the dirty minds we have floating around on the board.
On Topic:
It is what it is; bot scripts are designed to advertise and out of however many hundreds of thousands of spam links they make--whether through email or forums or cboxes or any other public-enabled form--they will achieve a good percentage of hits through it. Strength in numbers and all that. However, because the internet is not regulated, and we're all so anti-regulation, you take the good with the bad. A bitter pill, but a necessary one.
All you do is continue to seek out methods to deter them. Look for mods that are available, find out what other people do, keep on top of bot control on a daily basis. It doesn't help to get mad because it doesn't effect them at all. While Captcha will catch a percentage of bots it won't catch them all. Essentially what you need is a mod where you can add in a customisable question in the registration field that has to be answered correctly. Set a minimum registration time of about 30 seconds, and keep changing that question whenever you start getting bots again. What I don't know is whether IF are aware that this is a more efficient way of stopping bots than CAPTCHA, or whether there are any mods available for this type of forum.

Ugh. They posted one and I clicked on it again. I keep thinking it's some debate about partying or something... I'm always disappointed.
antisocialist87 - August 1, 2008 11:12 PM (GMT)
I think it's funny how this latest bot was too pathetic to invest in a spell check.
Filipinna?
WildeThing - August 2, 2008 12:13 AM (GMT)
Haha, you read the post, and noticed a spelling mistake? I applaud you. We need to find the creator of said bot and teach him a lesson.... on spelling!
antisocialist87 - August 2, 2008 12:19 AM (GMT)
Nah. It was in the Topic Title. I was about to go in and be my typical bitchy self, but then I realized that it was a bot. I lol'd even harder.
WildeThing - August 2, 2008 12:37 AM (GMT)
Ok, so... -unapplaud-
Still funny, though.
