Title: We Need New Roleplay Types!
Description: If you think so too, read this post.

EliteGirl - July 28, 2008 04:27 PM (GMT)
I've been thinking, we have a lot of RPG types. Except for some. I'm thinking we don't have RPGs that involve rehabilitation centers for the drinkers and smoking addicts or homeless shelters for poor characters. What about a roleplay involving trailer parks? It would be nice to have those as RPG types, because not everyone has a perfect life. o.O

If anyone else has more ideas for realistic RPG's, and other type RPG's that the RPG community doesn't have, that would be great! Because not everyone is in Hollywood, has a cushy life in the suburbs in a small town or city, is in a mental institution, a high school student or college student, a crime victim or suspect, part of the police, a "Harry Potter" or "Twilight" character, mythology, part of the historical past, or science fiction. x.x

Roswenth - July 28, 2008 05:49 PM (GMT)
There are a number of rehabilitation RPs, but I would love to see a trailer park RPG. That would be hysterical!

I've seen a couple in the past. Couldn't tell you if they were still going or if they were any good, byt they're out there.

There are? Huh. I didn't know. ^_^
Are there prison/jail RPGs or hospital RPGs that are InvisionFree? And beginner-friendly? I have no clue except for what's on RPG-Directory and Shine.

Yes, there are too many prison and rehabilitation RPs. And they end up glamorizing those lifestyles. It's kiind of sickening.

Me? I think we need more horror--but not vampire. *thinks Resident Evil* RPs where scary stuff actualy happens!

Settings for RPs:
(non-horror RPs, that is)
  • Supermarket
  • Department store (one store)
  • Library (???)
  • Mall (the working people, not the shopping people)
  • A movie store (hahahaha)

Greymalkin - July 28, 2008 07:12 PM (GMT)
Personally, I RP to get away from rl. It's pure, unabashed escapism. That's not to say I have any objection to 'reality rp,' just that doesn't float my boat. If it works for others, great.

Those are good ideas, December! I never would have thought of those. ^_^ :pink:

Though i absolutely love the idea of actually having different forms of rps besides your typical high-school/college and twilight/hp rps, but i think we have to remember this is based on the fact on WHO would join.

It ties in to people wanting a certain thing out of their role plays. People dont seem to want to play psychologically damaged people who arent gorgeous. Its human nature i guess, we all want to be seen as pretty characters who can get into relationships with anybody.

Honestly, thats the biggest thing that everyone seems to want for their characters. Romance ... A.K.A sex. Because, people cant get it so easily as typing up a hot shower scene. Its all human desire and thats why people just cant help the fact they want some thing like that.

Its all rather sad, because like somewhere i read on this board "Most people on here cant achieve the appearence most playbys used have because granted some of us are overweight and etc". So, i guess its just natural?

But if people can start facing themselves as playing a character more similar than lets say Chad Michael Murray, then i think more rp suggestions will be opened up.

Oohh, has anyone noticed barely anyone plays old people? -winks- i use hugh laurie though, so i think im out of that group. xD

True, that's a good point. But even beautiful people have problems. They can be mothers who work and come home to take care of the kids, or people in debt, drug addictions, insecurity about the way they look, addicted to painkillers, etc.
Realistic characters have strengths, but they also have flaws. Like people.
It's a matter of good character devolopment. There are so many flaws to play, too.

I perfer to make my characters flawed and develop them. :innocent: But I'm suprised people only want characters who have it made, the "easy life".

There should be one where a bunch of people get stuck in a supermarket. like the supermarket is on lockdown. We should see who dies of starvation....*grins evily*

but yeah, I totally agree with you guys. Here are some of my suggestions:
  • water park (again, people who work there, not the others)
  • soup kitchen (people who work there and those who eat there daily)

something like that.

Oooh, and once I read this book about these girls who got stuck in a bathroom. They couldn't get out, but people could still get in. That would be fun to rp. :p

I like the "stuck in a bathroom" idea. And the water park idea and the soup kitchen idea. How about the supermarket not be locked down, but instead a place where the employees wreck havoc on the employers, like getting into foodfights, even a male employee sleeping with the employer's wife? It would be a good idea. :pink:

charlottecullen - July 28, 2008 09:44 PM (GMT)
Wow, these are all great ideas! I agree, we need more types of roleplays. I'm working on starting one based on a "haunted" boarding house.

Luke - July 28, 2008 11:21 PM (GMT)
I like the idea of expanding my horizons, so I voted yes.

Sashokun - July 28, 2008 11:56 PM (GMT)
Why not a Night at the Museum sort of thing? That would be really good if constructed properly. Though probably suckish if a unexperienced person gave it a try.

antisocialist87 - July 28, 2008 11:59 PM (GMT)
I'd like to see an RP based on the movie Soul Food.

Haha, that reminds me, we may not be mostly set there or anything, but in my Supernatural RP, there is a supermarket. There is currently one person shopping. *giggle*

Sicaluff - July 29, 2008 12:32 AM (GMT)
Yes! Please explain, and if you have an idea, add it, please!
I've been thinking of something set in a town, although not school based. Maybe having school areas, though. And maybe a simple informative story, rather than a long plot everyone has to go by and follow. I have no actual ideas for it, though. -_-

But I am sick and tired of the same genres. HP, school, band, Vampire/Werewolves, etc. are getting old really fast.

silent cacophony - July 29, 2008 12:42 AM (GMT)
I'm currently making one set on the world's first public space colony, but it's more earth-like than it is all metal and stuff. That different enough? XD

Sicaluff - July 29, 2008 12:51 AM (GMT)
o.O Very unique, indeed. =D

Rhi-Rhi - July 29, 2008 05:45 PM (GMT)
Hmm...I think these would be fun locations and events within an RPG, but to be honest I don't really see these things lasting very long as an RPG in and of themselves. It feels like people would join the game for the lulz, post one or two times, and then vanish when the shiny lulz wore off. :B RPers today are already notoriously flaky with short attention spans so I'm having trouble seeing how these ideas would hold their attention for a prolonged period of time in and of themselves.

However!

As part of a larger RPG, these ideas would be fun IMO! Create a location in a game that is a supermarket and have an event where it goes on lockdown (or the whole employee wars thing). xD That way you can have those events and quirky locations, but it's part of a larger RPG and plot that people can turn to when the event ends (or people grow bored of it) which will thus prevent the RPG's death.

I'm guessing that we have certain RPGs that many people opposed of at first?
That noone approved of at first? And then they got approved as time went on.
Well, I see it like that.

There's tons to do with the settings mentioned:

Mall- Parties at the music store, with food and drinks. People could relax on the furniture in the furniture store and talk when done working. The restaurant people would serve and cook food for the shoppers. Police to catch shoplifters and take the items back to the stores. And for the clothing stores, salespeople try to sell products such as new shirts and pants. And people to help clean the mirrors and places where people try clothing on (Yes, this is a job, I have done it at the Gap). And even bookstores, where the workers ask the customers what book they want, and the workers give the books to the customers (if they have the books) and if they don't have the books, they tell the customers.

Supermarket- There's different jobs. Baggers, Cashiers, Stock Work, Janitors, etc. I'm thinking "Hillers", "Busch's", "Whole Foods Market".

Soup Kitchen- Cooks to make the food, people to serve the food to the homeless, people to clean up the mess when the homeless are done eating.
Yes, people can play the homeless or the employees, whichever one they perfer. Some homeless people have interesting stories.

Angel-girl - July 29, 2008 08:29 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I think I agree with Rhi-Rhi. These ideas could work as part of a larger game, but I believe it would be really hard to keep one running based on them alone. Yes, such jobs exist, I've had hundreds of similar, but there are few people who can write about cleaning mirrors day in and day out interestingly. I could probably do it once, but not over any long term. It's real hard to keep the mundane running on an RP. People have to want to follow the plots, and it's real tricky to find the balance between reality and actual interest. I think that a little of each could work out nicely.

I ran a homeless game for about two months and it didn't really catch on, despite some really great members and fascinating characters. My current game encompasses any and all aspects of urban life and trust me, it's plenty of work just keeping people interested in it. They come and go all the time.

Just because it didn't catch on, doesn't mean the same result will happen again! "Gossip Girl" and "Twilight" weren't popular roleplays at first, and now they are. Same with "One Tree Hill". It's a case of "if at first you don't succeed, try again". That's what I believe. ^_^

phoenyx rose - August 1, 2008 07:41 PM (GMT)
kill me now, but i kinda want to see a cloverfield rpg. like the aftermath of what happened. but i just don't know how that could be fit into a roleplaying game.

frothies - August 4, 2008 01:45 PM (GMT)
LOL!

I've been part of a Wallmart RP once. XD

It was fun, although the role play isn't really active anymore when I got accepted. But anyways, I got fun from the characters. Reading about them, they're really unique. There's a hobo, there's the old janitor, and the hovering manager. Hah! I loved it! XD

Ooh, phoeny rose, that sounds like an awesome RP! =D

I once had an idea about making this somewhat apartment-oriented role play. Like Friends (most of the events happened in their apartment building, right?) But it never really got off the ground. x_x
