Title: Cboxes--
Jae - July 27, 2008 03:32 AM (GMT)
Soooo, I've read through all of the old topics annnnd was mostly wondering (again) what kinds of cboxes people use now, or if any new good ones have popped up. Here are the current problems:
- The refresh buttons on cbox.ws cboxes have vanished! D:
- Shoutmix only allows 60 messages per hour.
- Chatango does that weird registration thing.
- Planet MiniBox only allows 20 people online.
So, which one(s) do you use, and why? I have a possible member who insists that the refresh button is absolutely crucial. Dx

I use Cbox.ws Even though there's no more refresh button, you can go without it - the "join" button is basically auto-refresh if you press it, so that possible member clearly hasn't realised that. Although I wasn't sa fan of it at first, I realised that disliking it wasn't going to do anything, so I just got used to it. But I still use Cbox because I'm used to setting it up with all of the colours and such; it's just easier for me to stick to what I know. [=

personally, a shoutbox or cbox are my favorites, cbox being my most favorite because, with shoutbox, whatever name you use in one box, it carries on to the other boxes on other sites that use shoutbox.
lol, i didn't even realize the thing with the join/autorefresh on cbox, i guess because i have an old box, it doesn't change... but, to me, cbox has always been the easiest to use.
i have a deep loathing against chatango.

I bought the premium version of the planet minibox chatbox and really like it; the number of people allowed on at once is increased to fifty (with options to filter who gets on), it auto refreshes, and you can have private conversations with people through the tabs option. Oh! And the message history goes back for ages, which is good for sites where you have a lot of chatty members. The tabs feature doesn't always work though...it gets confused when you combine it with the tabs feature of web browsers. If you're not willing to pay a bit, and/or your site gets a lot of traffic, I would probably go for something tried-and-true like cbox. As for me, I like my loaded minibox. ^_^
rosalieart - July 27, 2008 01:43 PM (GMT)
chatango. because no one can go and impersonate you, no message limit, you can ban people/delete posts easily, and it doesn't really need to be refreshed. i've tried 3-4 different kinds, but chatango is the best in overall performance that i've found
missmossxx - July 27, 2008 02:06 PM (GMT)
I use cbox, mainly because I think the majority of others are quite ugly, I don't like the flash look. I also use it because I find it amazingly easy to understand :p Everything is super easy, changing colours, banning IPs, allowing avatars, all easily found. I love it <3
Mine still has a refresh button, but I never use it.. Because I personally am an online list stalker, when not actually posting, or something.. That's my default page so I can see what other people are doing xD So I'm refreshing the page all the time anyway, when clicking update.

To be completely honest, I'm not fond of shoutboxes in general - they're just one more thing to moderate, but I have used them in the past. At RA we used ShoutMix - the basic, free package at first, but then we ran into a real problem member who would spam it with all sorts of vulgarities. So the owner decided to dish out the money to upgrade to premium and it was much easier to control. Frankly, it wasn't bad. We never seemed to run into limit problems even before premium. The main noticeable thing premium did was improve the auto-refresh time. I think the shiny admin panel came with premium as well, but it's all a bit blurry now. :green:
Clear as mud? Good, I hope you like mud, because it started out with good intentions. :p

I found moderation to be a pain on cbox, so I switched to Shoutmix. That was brilliant, until I discovered the sixty messages per hour limitation >.<
Now I use Chatango, which I love. Easy to moderate, easy to make moderators, just easy. It can be a pain with names at times, but other than that, I've no issue with it.

I use the free minibox until my rpg gets too big for the users limit and then I upgrade it, lol.
GreyScale - July 27, 2008 07:46 PM (GMT)
I use cbox.
What I do is open up the cbox in its own tab, hit 'Join', and it is essentially a chatroom that way. With that setup, I can always moderate the cbox and always participate in it, without actually being on the forum itself.
vision_afar - July 27, 2008 10:14 PM (GMT)
I use cbox, and it's working more than great so far, and as long as it does, I don't see a reason to change it. We still have refresh button, too.
Jae - July 27, 2008 10:36 PM (GMT)
...wait a second.
I had something in this post, but it didn't make sense.
Sorry. Dx

I use Shoutmix, its so easy for moderation uses and as a member there isn't really much difference between cbox and shoutmix... well in my opinion anyway. And the 60 messages an hour doesn't bother us as we don't have lots of members and when they are on we tend to be on at different times so shoutmix is perfect for us at the moment =]

I use Cbox. But my Cbox has the refresh buttom, I don't know why it didn't change to join. I register it after the 'join' buttom started to spread around haha. But I have a problem, there's one day i found that my Cbox deleted some newest messages itself and I didn't change any setting... that's still a mystery.

I'm a pretty avid fan of CBox.ws. I rarely run into the more obvious issues involved (impersonation, etc), but that's really just luck on my part. I just like being able to customize it that easily--other shoutboxes/chatboxes seem to stick out like a sore thumb. I can actually make a CBox look like it belongs there.
Mousie - August 1, 2008 10:33 AM (GMT)
I use shoutmix, and love it. Admittedly, we're on a premium one, because we definitely need more than 60 messages/hr. My issue with CBox (and this goes back a good two and a half years, mind) was that I couldn't delete posts from the Cbox itself, I had to log into the admin panel. Shoutmix has the online user counter (love) and lets me edit/ban/delete without going to the Shoutmix website.
It's also simple and easy to skin, another bonus, cause I hate having something on the page that looks out of place.
Panda - August 1, 2008 01:24 PM (GMT)
Shoutmix. I'd be shocked if my lot ever actually achieved 60 messages per hour, to be honest.
bobbin - August 3, 2008 09:53 PM (GMT)
I use CBox, but it drives me and my members mad, especially when it 'eats posts'. I wanted to change to ShoutMix, but reading your review, that might be useless to us. :/
.cheshire.cat. - August 6, 2008 02:37 AM (GMT)
My choice would be ShoutMix, for its styles and handling. But, thanks to the limit p./hour, Cbox is what I usually use.
Kan - August 19, 2008 01:02 AM (GMT)
I don't suppose there's a way to opt in for either the Join or Refresh options on Cboxes from www.cbox.ws, is there?
I'd love to be able to choose for myself which should be used, depending on the activity of the other participants. Can anyone point me in the right direction, or is it a lost cause?
candy - August 19, 2008 02:49 AM (GMT)
No there isn't Kan.
I personally use either cbox or shoutmix or saybox. Saybox is ran by someone I've spoken to a few times, and the box itself is pretty good.

I use Planet Minibox because it is awesome :) I really do hate the 20 users thing, tis true! But thus far, I haven't had that happened to any of my forums, which could be a good/bad thing, I dunno XD Anywho, I really like the look of the Minibox - the tabs thing won me over, especially (the smilies tab is always open for me, haha). I like the automatic refresh, too. That's very helpful when I'm writing out posts & things. I like Cbox - it's trustworthy, simple, and easy to use. I just decided to start using the Planet Minibox when I found out people could register and use avatars ;D
HarlequinGirl - August 19, 2008 02:34 PM (GMT)
I use Chatango, as I use that Chat Box as an IC thing, sorta like a 'School IM Box' on my Highschool RP site, and members can sign up as their characters. I think it's really nifty, its cute and colourful and I love how it looks.
I also like how everything is custom, and you can change pretty much everything about your thing, down to username colours, text styles and colours, avatars, I dunno, I just really like it xD
