Title: Forum Skins
Description: How often do you change yours?

Elenlond - July 24, 2008 10:03 PM (GMT)
I was just curious as to how often people change their forum skins =O. I change mine probably... once a year, maybe once every two years. Depends on how fast I get tired of it, and if members are starting to tire of it, or if I'm just bored with it period. XD

If you select other, please specify. =)

Well, I voted 'other' because I've only ever run one RPG and that's only two and a half months old. Currently it has a default premade skin, but when I find something more in keeping with the genre - historical, Napoleonic Wars-era - I will change it. And if I could do graphics myself, or get the courage to ask someone else there, I'd change bits of it now. Like the page background, or banner. Or both. Just to make it 'fit' better.

It's currently purple, which is better than the default blue. Yellow looked nasty, green hurts the eyes, I think everyone would kill me if it was red (private joke!). At least it's not a 'girly' purple... but I'd still like to find something more in keeping with the theme.

Well it really depends on the forum. One forum I'm co-admining usually changes the skin when we do a revamp, but there's another one that I wouldn't change the skin on because I would have to change everything else to match...does that make sense?

I change mine when activity starts to drop. I have an activity check and give everything a brand new look to make people want to come back. [= So I said "other" because I can't really decide when activity drops. xD

rarely.

which means, I have absolutely no idea. The skin isn't that important to me, so I generally tend to leave it until I'm sick of it, then change it.

I voted other for a few reasons. I've discovered phpBB3 skins/styles are much more complicated so even though I had one when I opened my current site (about 2 months ago), I've been 'tweaking it' since then. Mostly as I learn more about handling skins.

The other reason for choosing 'other' is that rather than changing the skin, I try to add skins that users can choose from. So, I don't replace the option, more add to them when I have the time.

I pretty much never change mine. For one, it takes me ages to find one that somebody else made that actually works with the site's theme and content. Another reason is that I'm just too darn lazy to make a new banner and post status buttons, and I figure if the site is as slow as my sites usually are then there's not enough people even looking at the darn thing to warrant changing it.

As often as I can be bothered making a new one.

With Invisionfree, this was frequently. I usually start thinking on a new skin when I've got nothing left to tweak on the board, and I like seeing Tally in a dlfferent 'look'. Although there was one day where I changed it five times in an hour...

Yeah. Members weren't impressed over that. XD

Now I've got a full IPB, it's a lot more complicated to skin. I've been working on the same skin for about three months now (used to take me 8-10 hours to complete an IF skin images and all) and I"m pretty excited about releasing it next week. :D

Depends really, especially since my board is a Zetaboard. We usually add in a theme or two from time to time.

Sharpiefan - August 8, 2008 05:57 PM (GMT)
I've just gone through and changed the colours and everything on StC's skin so it doesn't look so default now. I'm finding it really easy to use the ACP for the phpBB forum I have as well; it's no harder really than changing the colours for a LiveJournal layout, which I've done several times on the plural accounts I have over there.

I tend to pick a skin and stick with it.

Ditto. I like keeping a consistent theme since I make most of my graphics myself...seems like no one wants to make graphics for the skins I use.

I said other because I only change it when I feel we really need to which could be once a year or a few times a year. It all depends.

summerdanez - August 21, 2008 07:08 AM (GMT)
I try to change it once a year but my site is so fast paced and there is always something to do that I rarely have the time to sit down and make a new skin and layout. I've only had one complaint about it being the same but I don't think most of my players generally care.

Metallicar - August 21, 2008 07:14 AM (GMT)
Personally, it's an effing hassle.
I only may change skins if the board has been around for a while, needs a revamp, or am bringing it back from the dead.
Other wise I don't touch it. Cause like I said, effing hassle.
Since I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, I feel like everything has to match, so you see where changing the skin means I have to change out graphics, and I always do my own boards' graphics... effing hassle.

Munch - August 21, 2008 12:04 PM (GMT)
There are too many gaudy and poorly done skins lying around for me to want to dig up the few good ones, so I tend to change skins rarely if at all. I'm a picky mofo about it, apparently.
