Title: Celebrity Baby Names = Character Names
Description: This trend MUST STOP.
Sunday - July 23, 2008 03:09 AM (GMT)
I love Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Fave celebrity power couple. But honestly, when she gave birth to her twins and they revealed the names, I was so annoyed LOL. First thing that popped to my mind? "Cute names. Now everyone in RP will be sharing them." First it was Jayden (Britney's)... Apple (Gwyneth Paltrow's)... Shiloh (Angelina's again)... Then Harlow (Nicole Richie's)... GOD. The main thing that bugs me is that Vivienne is one of my favorite names ever, and now I'm seeing it everywhere. If I ever wanted to name another character Viv, people would just assume I'm another little trend-follower. Ughh. =/
beta pleated sheet - July 23, 2008 03:46 AM (GMT)
How dare she spoil my favorite name ever? Though, I've always spelled it Vivian, the other spelling is too feminine for my tastes. But still, I've had a Vivian character long before Vivienne was conceived.
I feel ya. Oh man do I feel ya!
antisocialist87 - July 23, 2008 05:20 AM (GMT)
Jayden, or anything with an -ayden, qualifies as an awful name to me.
And naming a child "Apple" is not making your kid into a unique snowflake. That child is a playground target in the making.
Ali.inthejungle - July 23, 2008 05:38 AM (GMT)
People are naming their RP characters Apple? Seriously?
I feel worse for her little brother, Moses. I suppose that's a baby-turned-character name trend that didn't catch on?
December, Esq - July 23, 2008 06:19 AM (GMT)
I like the name Ayden. But bleh, I didn't realize that it was so close to Brittany's kid's. Heck, I didn't even know that Brittany had a kid named Jayden.
Mousie - July 23, 2008 09:13 AM (GMT)
I love the name Jayden, but it's already been used in my generation of my family. XD
Who's sitting about waiting for 'Sunday Rose'? That baffles me. Who calls their kid Sunday, when they were born on Monday? But anyhoo. The Kidman-Urbans can have that all to themselves.
I can't say I've noticed the trend though. I pick up names in weird places (or so I think, then I realise my brother's middle names are the same as two of my characters, and things like that). I want a new character now.. she will be a Gaelene. Mehehe.
junebug! - July 23, 2008 10:14 PM (GMT)
I was disturbed when a celebrity named her child Kyd. "Hey Kyd! Oh, not you, kids!" There was also a rapper (I think) who named his daughters something like Rainbow Sunshine & Forever Happy. O_o Okie dokie, artichokie...
And then - I saw those exact names on an RPG! *dies*
Seriously, people, have some creativity! I also love it when people name their character Juno, and use Ellen Page as their play-by XD Or on Hollywood RPG's, when they use a celeb as their play-by, and name their character after the celeb, but swear they are not playing the celebrity :p
Jayden was a cute name until Britney destroyed it :/
EliteGirl - July 24, 2008 05:41 PM (GMT)
I saw the name "Apple" on a forum that I tried out for. I made a biography for the site, which was optional. I also did the face claim, and a plotting page. So did a few other people. Well, since they won't add me or any of the other new people, I quit that site. It seemed like it was admins and only a few other people got accepted. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
Sorry, offtopic.
Silverstar912 - July 24, 2008 07:06 PM (GMT)
Oh dear. :innocent: I wasn't even aware people were doing that!
Since so many famous kids' names are so far 'out there', I'm having difficulties understanding why even the most annoying, cliched roleplayer would want to use them, especially if it's not a Hollywood/Celebrity RPG.
You're right, that's the kind of trend that has to stop!
That's definitely not happening in any of the sites I post in.
TurkFox - July 25, 2008 04:09 PM (GMT)
I had my Jayden long before Britney had hers! *protects him* But yeah, I hate it when people just jump on a new, 'cute' name because they think it's cool - then everywhere you go you bump into it and you grow to hate it.
Or worse - I've been told Jayden would be rejected if I didn't change his name because they had three Jaydens already - I bet I named mine long before they did! </minirant>
December, Esq - July 25, 2008 04:12 PM (GMT)
I am going to name a character "Orange" and see where that takes me. :innocent:

Gok Wan said that that name reminded him of a Sunday roast xD I didn't notice it till he said, and now it's all I think. And if you swap the first parts of Shiloh Pitt around ;) ((Swap Sh with P.. ahem.))
I get all my names off babynames.com.. And go all cheesey and try and match the meaning of the name up with the character, I need a good flow of syllables between the first name and surname too.. I'm kind of obsessive about that.
My favourite names are Jude, Abren and Cara.. And lately Jude's been appearing everywhere too.. I've liked that name since I read Noughts and Crosses for the first time :p
.Ra - July 25, 2008 04:22 PM (GMT)
I know, people are going to think I am insane but I like the name Moses. In many of the countries I lived in there were lots of boys names Moses. Now I wouldn’t name my child it, but in some places it is just as normal as James and John are.
I agree with everyone else on the other names. Sunday, Apple, Coco… they are all just a little bit too much for me.
Though, I have seen stranger names in the RP world, I have to wonder where people come up with their names. Do people just put a string of letters together and go ‘Yes! this is the perfect name!’?
TurkFox - July 25, 2008 04:29 PM (GMT)
missmossxx - I've got a Jude too! Named after Jude Law many years ago, at my friend's suggestion. :D
charlottecullen - July 25, 2008 04:39 PM (GMT)
Gahh. What happened to normal names? It's nice to see a little variety, but why, oh why, does 'Apple' need to popping up everywhere?!?!?

I agree, although I like the name "Hayden" better. My weirdo writing teacher has a six-year-old son named Jayden, bless his soul... x.x
Ezzelin - July 25, 2008 05:03 PM (GMT)
I have one weird character name. But I bastardized it from legitimate Russian because I was fascinated by the combination of letters. :3

I don't think I've yet been to a site where people mimic celebrity babies names. But seriously? People name characters Apple?
I too feel sorry for the real life babies called "Apple" or something like that. I agree, they will be an easy target for mockary...original name or not. Where I live there are rules on names that is supervised by actual authority...if a name is clearly not a real name and is easy target for mockary it can be actually rejected because they see it might cause unnecessary harm to the child. Parents just need to use their brain a bit. The laws on names have slacked over the years but I still think there is still some attention focusing on the name and the standards of the name. Just in milder sense. Mostly parents just realize not everything fits...what's with celebrities?
Whose kid was called Coco 'cause I remember finding that very odd. Sounds like something more suitable for a dog or a teddy bear.
Though even more than just mere odd names I have seeing people with total of seven names! I doubt it's even legal to have that many names. Not in here at least I dunno what the laws are in the US. I could maybe stand all the seven names but why do you insist that each of them are either just plain odd or just spelled oddly?!
wisteria - July 25, 2008 05:16 PM (GMT)
I actually haven't seen too much of that trend and am really, really glad I haven't. Though Jayden and all the various spellings I've seen a lot of for a long time, just thought the name was popular.
If it really is a trend, though, how long before Pilot Inspektor shows up then? That is just the best-worst celeb kid name I have come across so far. Ugh.

I'm the same way. The first (maybe middle) and last name always have to sound good together. It'd be so cool to be a baby name specialist, because all of them have their own concentrations... Like how the names sound, their meaning, etc. I think I'd be good at it, haha. :D
These names seem to be common mainly in high school or real life roleplays. Other common names, but that aren't from celebrities (as far as I know), are Paisley, Jersey, Daytona... Funnily enough, most of the crazy names are girls. Oh, and I love that no one copies the "normal" celebrity baby names, like Violet Affleck. It's old-fashioned but it's a hell of a lot better than Paisley (no offense to anyone who likes or has that name...). Oh, oh, then I love it when people use names from movies and books or just name them stupid things. Like that emo kid I saw named Anthony Edward Masen (aka Edward Cullen's "real" name), or all the Gaspard Ulliels and Emily Brownings named Edward and Bella. And the Ellen Pages named Juno. And like Jupiter Jones. :|
Blargh. Honestly, sometimes I want to make sites canon only and give people really common names like James and Britney. Rofl.

Coco Riley Arquette.. Daughter of the girl who played Monica in Friends. I personally like that, I mean, I wouldn't name my kid that, but celebrities are expected to give their children more 'unique' names, and Coco isn't TOTALLY freaky.. Look at Coco Rocha, for example.

Or Satchel, Blanket, Fifi-Trixabelle xD
What do you guys think of Zowie Bowie? I sort of like it, but it is cruel too..
I like cruel names, I think xD Oh, so often I've wanted to use Gorgophone as a character name. I will, one of these days, I really will xD <3 I'd have to give her a surname like Smith, or something xD
elphie49 - July 25, 2008 08:06 PM (GMT)
Compared to most celebrity child names, Sunday Rose isn't that bad. But it's rather dumb to name your child Sunday when they were born on a Monday. It's like naming your kid April when they were born in October.
I've yet to see any of the really bad celebrity child names on sites, although I see Jayden a lot. However, since Audrey Kitching became popular, I have seen the name Audrey everywhere. And Juno and Miley. It's getting really annoying.
Sunday, that would be so awesome. I guess there is a good way to stifle someone's creativity.
Radsos - July 25, 2008 08:13 PM (GMT)
Coco honestly isn't that bad. I mean, it raises my eyebrows and that stuff, but otherwise it's all right. I would mind naming my kid that, though a dog or cat or some other pet, yes. I also would probably name a character of mine that.
Mostly because I did name a character of mine Fluff once and I'm not afraid to do something like that again. Mostly because it was just so funny writing his posts... and I love torturing my characters with names. Especially since all my characters are guys so I sometimes like to give them female names... like I named one guy Sabella once. It was hilarious!

Well, April is a pretty normal name, actually. Sunday reminds me of Mister Rogers because all the puppets were named like 'King Friday' and 'Prince Tuesday' and stuff like that.

Oooh, I love to deliberately gives characters horrible names just so other characters can tease them. xD
I have a guy named Cherry, for instance, and a girl named Arrow. They both hate their names and get teased for them. I don't just use names I like; I'll also pick names for their awfulness and reserve them for certain characters because I'm mean like that. ;D And normal names? Pffft. What's normal, anyway? What one person thinks sounds gorgeous another will hate. *shrug*
I personally haven't noticed those trends, but I'd imagine they don't really pop up in the sci-fi and fantasy genres. :B Either way, I'm not bothered; I don't pay attention to celebrities or their spawn. I didn't even know Jayden was a popular name. '_' *just named a character Jadyn; same pronunciation x3*
On a random note, I've always loved the name Shiloh...and this just reminded me. xD *makes a mental note to name her next character that*
samaside - July 26, 2008 11:16 AM (GMT)
I've actually know a Shiloh - well, she was Shyloh - for nine years now.
Also, it's just a trend that happens with names as a whole. Like it not that's just how it goes. The thing is that most of the names are not appropriate for the generations that they are being played on. Like, a real-life game now will not have little Jayden's and Apples running around willy-nilly. A second-generation Hollywood game, though, would. It's like playing people named Stephanie in an 1800s game. It just didn't happen.
I don't begrudge people their names, even if they are ridiculous, lol.
Unless of course it's their actual kids. Characters I don't care about so much. I mean, MY characters always have normal names. But whatever.
Still, when people give their actual kids stupid names I get pissed off on behalf of the poor children.
Not that I think Vivian or Knox or Shiloh are that bad of names.

I'll name one "Strawberry" and join you on our crusade to fill the world with people who name their kids after fruit.
I like weird names, though, and I've never cared to listen to what any of the celebrities are naming their kids. They can name their kids whatever they like. I don't care. I've always loved the name Gideon, though I wouldn't go much weirder than that. Gideon isn't really weird though. I'm not going to head into Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings and name my kid Frodo or Sirius or something. Then he could get made fun of. "Why so Sirius?" HA, bad puns! YEAH DARK KNIGHT.

Molly Weasley's brother was called Gideon ;)
I think of the Charmed character when I hear that name though, I do. The Magic School Headmaster.. If you don't watch the programme, he went a little bit cuckoo and tried to kill a baby 'for the greater good'.
I agree though, it's up to the parents what they name their child, and as long as it isn't TOO bad, well, what does it matter? If a bully wants to pick on someone, then they'll find a way to do it, silly name or not.. That's why children should be able to trust that their parents and teachers and things will protect them from it.
Deputy Dingo - July 26, 2008 04:36 PM (GMT)
There was actually an article in the Herald Sun about people naming their children stupidly. One person called their kid Bus Shelter, another VIolence and someone called their kid something riidiculous like Tulula DAnces the Hula in Hawaii and a court legally changed it in the custody battle because she was too embaressed to tell anyone and just went by 'K'
