Title: Alright, How Am I Doing?
Description: canons and rules

Satire.and.Ice - July 23, 2008 02:57 AM (GMT)
Yeah, another look at my rules topic. Trying to bring in some more members, and I think maybe the rules and canons might turn people off a bit.

Since I can't post a link to the site and I'm too lazy to get the whole canon list, basically it's some premades in all the categories I've got. Some have faces and traits already chosen (cause some people do like that) and some do not. However, there's only six teenage mutant canons, since I know people are going to be making a lot of those as originals anyway.

Now for the rules.

QUOTE
There are no fancy phrases hidden in here, because quite frankly I think we're all mature enough to read rules without fancy phrases and if you're reading this, I'm clearly right. So thanks for proving me right.

GENERAL

1. Please register with a first and last name, (middle name optional) all in lowercase. Also, use your common sense. Vamp99991 or Amelie Heather Smart will never be okay.

2. An important concept is that of MATURE CONTENT. If you need mature content for your plot to work, then go ahead, be my guest. As long as you M the TITLE (so people can see straight away) and as long as you don't make it literary porn or bloodfest. Also, if I'm contacted by anyone saying they're feeling uncomfortable about you - if you're trying to involve them in literary porn or just a thread they're uncomfortable with, I'll deal with it, so make sure both you and the other person are cool with it.

3. On the same topic, porn or extremely inappropriate content is not allowed at all.. Literary or photographic, please understand it will never be okay. Ever. Okay.

4. In fact, any HARMFUL CONTENT IS NEVER OKAY. That includes things like racist/sexist/ant-Semitic or any other possibly discriminative content. This will be severely dealt with. We want a friendly, respectful board here, and if you have issues with that, turn back now. However, if it is your character who is racist or anti-something, or is an Athiest, you have the right to express this. Just don't go overboard.

5. There's no word minimum here, because that's just lame and elitist. But I do expect a level of proficiency so no one-liners or two-liners, for that matter. We're HIGH INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED. Thanks, guys. Helps us out here. If it makes sense to be short, fine, but use your discretion. At least two paragraphs would get you on my good side.

6. Stick to BASIC RP RULES. That means no godmodding, no powerplay, no OOC talk in the posts, and a good understanding of literacy.. No Mary-Sues/Gary-Stus. ONLY write in Third Person. You know the drill.

THIRD PERSON: "Bob went to the store and bought some Tic Tacs."
FIRST PERSON: "I went to the store and bought some Tic Tacs."
SECOND PERSON: (rather difficult) "I go to the store and see the gum on a shelf."
A DEFINITE NO NO: *walks into the store* Ooh, gum. *picks it up*

7. PLAY NICE, be nice. Don't be mean, or cliquey to anyone. We're not a cliquey site. Let's be a friendly, happy site. Don't pick fights, enter arguments. Just be the bigger person and walk away.

IMAGES

1. You may have an avatar and a sig. It can have different images, but nothing that strays too far from your character, like...a picture of Stewie in your avatar. If your charrie is in a relationship, then you may post that person's pic there too if you want, cause it looks cute. ^^

2. No anime, cartoons, or drawings to portray your character. Yes, this includes dollmakers.

3. Images are not to be HUGE. This is mainly for the benefit of people with finicky browsers (like meself...) or better things to do than wait for your pic to load. If you're uploading images, be sure they're PNG or in a format that isn't blurry or looks sloppy.

OTHER STUFF

1. Try to use plot pages that do not stretch the page. And for those of you posting in plot pages, make sure your icons are not placed so that they do the same thing.

2. In the cbox: no spamming, impersonation, or random complaints of I'M BORED. Don't pair yourselves off into cliques, either - we're going to try to involve everyone. Also, if you invited your friend over here, don't just rp with yourselves. Branch out!

3. If your characters are going to get preggers or die or something, you NEED to tell a admin about it and get one of our consents. This isn't a pregnancy help site or a graveyard.

Weeeelll? :pink:

It looks good, I would join, they are pretty straight forward without being jerky and snobby. The only thing I would change is the avatar rule, it would be wise to also allow something that represents your character, not just random junk that makes no sense to the plot or person. You touched all bases, mature content, c-box, basic rules of RPing apply. No loopholes that I can find, and I love loopholes!!

1. Please register with a FIRST, MIDDLE, AND LAST NAME, all in lowercase. Also, use your common sense. Vamp99991 will never be okay.

I’ve never liked this rule on any site. First, having to remember a middle name along with first and last is kind of tedious. First and last is enough. But secondly, I’m one that likes capitalizing proper nouns. Being forced to not capitalize something when you’re supposed to is pretty stupid in my opinion. It kind of makes the sites that do this look… a little lame. :-/

3. On the same topic, PORN OF ANY KIND IS NOT TOLERATED. Literary or photographic, please understand it will never be okay. Ever. Okay.

This could probably be changed to something more nicer like ‘inappropriate content is forbidden’. Although I hate porn myself, you can’t seem too stuck on it or people’ll think you’re weird. Just friendly advice from one person to another whose already been there.

QUOTE
This will be severely dealt with. Very severely. That's all I'm going to say.

Again, you don’t want to come across as an admin who’ll ban at the drop of a hat. I mean, I understand but if you restate severe consequences and absolute forbidden-ness people’ll get turned off of the site. Already within the first four rules, I’m already turned off just because of this factor. :-/

QUOTE
Stick to BASIC RP RULES. No Mary-Sues. Third person. You know the drill.

Although you think that everyone should know “the basic rp rules”, the problem is that you need to be specific. What are ‘the basic rp rules’ just so I don’t screw something up? That’s a really broad rule. I really hate hate HATE HATE HATE it when people type this rule in their role plays.

QUOTE
You may have an avatar and a sig, that shows ONLY your character.

Why? That’s quite redundant. I don’t necessarily want a picture that ONLY shows my character. :-/ That’s pretty stupid. No way will I join the site with a rule like that. No way. Talk about trying to micro-manage.

Satire.and.Ice - July 23, 2008 05:58 AM (GMT)
Alright, I fixed it, I think. What does it look like now?

Akala - July 23, 2008 02:09 PM (GMT)
I still don't like your avatar rule, but other than that it looks MUUUCH better. *shrug* what if I don't want to use a picture of my character? Different people have different tastes. Not everyone wants ot use their character.

I'm not entirely sure whether this applies to IC, OOC, or both (as the rules are vague there), but I have a problem with this one if it applies to IC. Some characters are racist. Some are sexist. Not allowing those characters to express their beliefs is stifling to the author, and therefore bad. I both understand and fully support not allowing such behavior out of character, and Bob doesn't like blue people, damnit!

This isn't so much a rule issue as a tone issue.

I don't get the point in this.. What have you proved? That people read rules?

I don't think it should never be ok for a person to want to use a middle name, I personally state a middle name in the application if my character has one, but I know some people like to give the full name in their member title, I don't know why, but they do...

Lower case? I make it a rule to never join a site where I have to write in lowercase, I think it just looks wrong and I made the mistake of joining a site in which I was requested to write my name in lower case, names and places are supposed to start with a capital letter, that is basic english. Why does it have to be lower case on your site?

Ok, basic rules to RP... Mind telling me what they are? What if I have never Role played before and therefore do not know the basic RP rules? I know you said somewhere you are advanced but I joined an advanced RP on my first go as a roleplayer... Just because it is advanced doesn't mean it is a given you are going to get the best RPers on the net or ones who have been around to know what the 'basic rules' are... You should expand on that, you don't need to be patronising, just explain it more than you have.

Also, third person is against basic rules of role playing? (neutral) I always role play in 3rd Person and I've seen a handful of sites who RP in 1st or 2nd... How is it against basic rules?

As for everything is, that is a good set of rules. You managed to tell them straight up what the do's and don’ts are, it doesn't take too long to read and I think you have covered everything you need too.

Satire.and.Ice - July 23, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
Yeah, about the lowercase thing...I guessed that a lot of people might join for this rule, because most of the active sites have it. Plus, lowercase looks better on the skin we found.. I did add that middle names were optional, because my admins and I already have our charries and names the way it originally was

Oh, no, third person is what we want you to have! I'm sorry, I should reword that sentence.

But quick question while I'm editing - do you think I SHOULD include a password? I've always hated having to read rules 394592051093 times to find some hard word they've got hidden in there. Maybe I trust my members too much?

Akala - July 23, 2008 04:26 PM (GMT)
I don't make people read rules to get a password. People should read rules before they even join, and if they don't, then it's their fault when they get in trouble. Especially if the rules are easily accessible.

Mischiefkayla - July 23, 2008 04:54 PM (GMT)
Oh right sorry. My misunderstanding...

About adding a password, I don't bother, my Co-Admin has a slogan in which you must include in an app so she knows you have read them, but I don't think you really need it. I read rules instantly and I trust other people do too, I don't join unless I know the rules, maybe I have a hobbie in reading rules :p. So I think if you trust your members enough not to make them use passwords to get onto the forum or add to the app then good on you. Besides, it is hard to find code words in a bundle of text.

Lexeh - July 23, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
if you read carefully, it's not that hard.

though, yeah, it might be annoying to go back to find it, but i found that it does help.

*shrugs* i included them in my rules and i haven't had a problem since the board opened.

Satire.and.Ice - July 23, 2008 10:20 PM (GMT)
Okies, I fixed the rules and the site is now in my sig. <3
The avatar thing I kept because I'm not sure I want people posting random pics of everything in their avatar. Is this bad?

Akala - July 23, 2008 11:15 PM (GMT)
*shrug* Your site not mine. I just don't like being told what to put in my avatar. It's my avatar, after all.

Satire.and.Ice - July 26, 2008 03:18 AM (GMT)
K, so...
I edited the rules, as well as added a section in our adverts. The section is basically just a darker version of the original advert, so the people on light-colored skins can read and not be chronically blinded. :p
Should it reel in members now?

Sunday - July 26, 2008 03:49 AM (GMT)
About the avatars - I think it's fine to keep the requirements as it is now. If you require PBs, then it makes sense to ask that graphics are of the character. Otherwise PBs are useless. So, no biggie. Just because one person disagrees with you doesn't mean it needs to be changed. :]

And just keep in midn these are just rules. You should try to sound friendly and welcoming, but rules don't (usually) make or break a site - unless you sound really rude or strict, which, IMO, is not your problem. :] If you're all ready, then just advertise and make sure you (as an admin) are active so your guests can see you're dedicated. Also, if you're still worried, then make a suggestions forum on your site and ask for the opinions of guests/members.

zander - July 26, 2008 06:37 AM (GMT)
(Just as a note, second person is in the "you form". As in, "You go to the store to buy some gum". The only different between your examples of second and first person currently is a change of time tense.)
