Title: I Made A Mistake. What Should I Do?

Upsilamba - July 15, 2008 02:30 AM (GMT)
I've been an admin of a few sites before, but I never had to do that much (advertising, updating sign-up threads, occasional profile acceptance). I am currently a member of a site I was promoted to being an admin at, and it was going fine, but now I've encountered a problem with accepting a profile. I made the mistake of not reading it as carefully as I should have before accepting it, and I'm now realizing how Mary-Sue-ish the character is. I requested one fault be corrected before I accepted the profile, and after I realized the other fault (saying that most guys love her), I sent her a PM asking her to change it to something like her character being popular among guys in her old town because the way she worded it was a bit too close to controlling the thoughts of other people's characters and made her character seem a bit too perfect. She made the change, but now I've realized that there are a couple other instances in her history of her character being Mary-Sue-ish/too perfect (it's a boarding school RP, not a arts/Hollywood/etc. one, and her character is 18 and already has a CD out and has been in over 10 theater productions). I know that it's my fault for not reading over her application more carefully, but I'm wondering what I should do about this situation. I don't want to un-accept her, especially because it was my fault, but I don't want to let her keep her character how she is and bring down the RP. There's always the chance that other people will see the Sue-ish-ness and not RP with her, but I would still be failing to do what I (implicitly) promised the original admin(s) I would do when I accepted the promotion.

(Sorry for the rambling)

Okay as soon as I saw this topic I was like yes I have to reply to this topic because this similar to the situation I went through. Anyway since you don't want to unapproval her, you can keep pming her asking her to make changes and keep reminding her how much it was your fault for not reading thoroughly, or you and the other admins can have a conference and all of you can list the things that she needs to change and let her know you didn't notice those things at first, or you can let it ride out and see what happens with the other members of the site (which I don't think is the best idea...cause things may get worse). And here I am thinking I can give good advice, oh well maybe someone else will post better adice here.

Thanks; yeah, I think I'll keep PMing her and asking her to explain some of the things--a skilled enough roleplayer could pull off the things she listed, but from the one post of hers I read, it seemed like she wasn't exactly up to that level.

Ok, it's possible for an 18 year old to have been in over 10 theatre productions and to have a CD out. All you have to do is ask her to be a bit more precise about what she means by that.

The theatre stuff could have been community productions, or even school productions. Her CD could be low budget and self promoted. Unless she's also said it just went platinum, that's not too hard to fix.

If you let her have some of what she's put in her application, but on a smaller scale, you won't sound so harsh when you're asking her to change it.

Thanks; that's kind of what I tried to go for when I PMed her just now. Hopefully it works out.

Edit: It looks better now, thanks.

It's not fair to unaccept a member, that's for sure. I like that you're trying to fix your mistake, and work with the member... but at the end of the day, just accept it as part of the learning process.

Not everyone accepts perfect applications all the time. It's a fact of life. We don't always check with the same consistency and accuracy, we don't always pick up all the faults in the first read. I've done it more than once, my co-admins have done it too, I'm sure.

The only thing you can definitely do about it, is file it away as an experience, and keep it in mind when you check over applications in future. And this is coming from the admin who accepted an application before realising there was no appearance section whatsoever.

So you're not alone.

Just keep it to minor changes, and don't be constantly PMing for changes. If you've already PM'd her with a lot of changes to be made, make it final... I'm sure your fellow admins will understand it's just a mistake everyone makes, I don't think you'll get shot for what is essentially a human mistake.

You could just leave it as it is. :[ It really doesn't matter unless the character plays her as a Sue. Otherwise it's just another character.

If you keep PMing her to change stuff, well, that's annoying. I would see where she would get frustrated with you and stuff like that. I would decrease the PMs. You've accepted her, so you should probably give her a chance. After all, someone could have a far less "sue" application and have a bigger Sue when everything is said and done.

Thanks, Mousie and December. Her application looks fixed now, but the one post she's made might be sue-ish, but I'll wait and see; and she'll probably learn from rping with people anyways.
