Title: Cbox Names
Seanu - July 11, 2008 02:27 AM (GMT)
Once again, I'm being curious. I wanna knoowww. So lemme know. Should I stay or should I go? If I go there will be trouble. If I stay there will be double. Bleh. I need to stop quoting songs. Somehow I managed to get Sir Mixalot into a previous post. x.0 -back on topic- So what do you prefer? I prefer Actual names/aliases myself, but I've seen forums done differently in the past. xD

Names/aliases especially if people have more than one character. It's more personal that way.
However, the problem I've encountered is that cboxes like on RPG-D actually save your username and then every similar cbox will use the same name. So I'm December, Esq on other websites which don't know me as that. Therefore, I've chosen a silly (or not?) universal name for now.

I dunno. I sort of like having the alias there because it's more personal, but I like to have the character name, so that way I don't have to ask who they play. >.> Both? I usually end up putting "Nda [Tally]" or something, anyway. -shrug-
SpazzyMal - July 11, 2008 05:44 AM (GMT)
I just go by my nickname, and prefer others do the same. It's easier for me to remember who play who that way, and makes things more personal and such.

if you've just got the one character, that's fine but i like to know the people i'm talking to. if i go to another board and you're on it, i would be able to spot you by your name. i've yet to meet anyone who uses their name like i do in the cbox so it's a way for the people i've RPd with in the past to recognize me if we happen to be in the same cbox.
as for the saving of the box name, i've only had to deal with that in shoutboxes and those boards are usually the ones that i've got to talk to an admin in because of something that has gone wrong with the advertising so i usually just go in as 'guestadmin' or i'll update the name to say who i am.

I don't require people use any type of name but I prefer just seeing their name. All my members go by their single name/alias. I don't have a problem when people do something like "Rachel [Adrien M]" but it disrupts my OCD-ness if the names aren't all unified. >:[

I say charrie name, for the same reason as Nda said. So I don't have to ask. I also just like to have my character name, so when others do the same, I get all happy. hah.

Again, we like to mix and match at Tally. Some of our members are known only as their character name, and the characters themselves have a habit of jumping in CBox and having a chat. I tend to go under '`Mousie'... Using the ` to mark me as admin, and my name is protected under the CBox filters.
Because there is IC chatter mixed in with the players, we have to differentiate between. Occasionally I forget to switch user names, or sometimes I just chat as myself under the name Alan.
So if I was to talk under myself as Alan, my name would be 'Alan'... when I'm talking as character Alan, we put a + in front to mark the difference, so "+Alan". This helps a lot, the characters can get a bit offensive and fight in CBox... which doesn't look good to anyone who thinks that Alan and Del are members having a go at each other!
... but it makes CBox all the more fun for us to have the charries in there too.

I put "other" because I usually put my name, with my char(s) beside it. Like, bri[char]. Or if I'm posting as a guest, I'll put "bri[guest]". Idk, I like names, but I like for people to know who the heck I am, also.
As for what I prefer overall, I'm not picky. If the name is massive, tho, that'll turn me off, especially if their name is way longer than their actual message. x_x

^^I thought I was going mad!!! I keep posting in a cbox and the alias comes up as MischiefKayla and nobody understands what the heck is going on and presume I am some spammer or something and I keep explaining that I didn't check the username before writing me message. lol.
Anyway. Once I have been on a site a while I'll use my name... Usually I post my name under all OOC posts, such as PM's, suggestions, comments, etc... So I make sure people know who I am before I change in the cbox, but just to make sure I use Mikayla (Or Michaela, depending on the site and whether people know how to say my name) and then put the character name in brackets, and after a while I'll take out the character name and if newbee's ask who I play it is very easy to then list my characters, rather than putting the names in my cbox name. I don't have many atm, but sometimes you can have more than three or four going at a time and it is very hard to fit them all in. XD On one site, I have actually been given a pet name which I now use instead of a character name or my name...
But on the other than, I think it is better to post and keep it relating to the board. I am on a co-adiming a site now in which a member posted with names like 'hello', 'hi', 'whats up'. (God, hope he isn't here, he'll know who I am... Eeek. :p)
But I thought it was really inappropriate, I didn't know who I was talking too... So I can see the benefits of having your real name and then I can see the purpose in character names.
But I think we all prefer personal sites, don't we? I love logging on and people sayings "Hey Mikayla!" I dunno why, but it makes it feel like we all really know each other, it comes off better on guests too, I think anyway, like we are warm and friendly people... Well, if you use it right, some people like to taunt that they know people by name... Either way...

I hit 'other' because I like people to use their account name if possible, but I don't usually make any big stink about it. Especially if they have more than one account.
vision_afar - July 11, 2008 02:53 PM (GMT)
I feel weird calling people by their character's name, so I prefer them using their actual name/alias. It's much more personal and it helps create better sense of community, imo.
Jenna Pyro - July 11, 2008 05:35 PM (GMT)
I dont' have it a requirement but I would like to see at least a nickname so that I know who I was talking to. I dont' mind if they have there character name there to but I would like to see like a alias of some kind.
PhoenixLily - July 12, 2008 12:36 AM (GMT)
Depends...for a site with tons of members, or a site that has established members that i don't know yet, I'd prefer something like Bella :: Moira :: Storm So that i ca see who plays who... However sites that I am admin of, or have been with since the beginning, I don't mind just seeing alias' or RLN.
Sicaluff - July 12, 2008 12:52 AM (GMT)
I chose whatever they wish. I hate to force people to do things lmao. That said, I do prefer things based upon the person's name or alias.
