Title: Admin Accounts.

I'm just curious as to which people prefer. It's not for a forum I'm making or anything, I'm generally intrigued after seeing something on someone elses forum. [=

And also, I'd like to know whether you think it's better to have an admin account which is just your name, like "Sean" or something, or whether you think it's better to have "Head Admin" and "Co-Admin" and such. [=

We actually do a mix on our site. There is the MAIN admin account which is anonymous for all requests and complaints to go to and reserves. We all know the password so you never know which admin is on. It's the one we do mass mailings and such off of.

This helps because if one of the three of us get pmed the others may have not. It saves time and information.

Each of us also have a character account that is in the admin member group. This has limited powers so we can't do any drastic changes. But it's the accounts we are mostly on.

I like the idea of a main admin account, but I don't like the security of it. =P So if I ever chose to have one, it certainly wouldn't be the root admin. Even though I only pick people I can trust, you just never know. But I still prefer Having either seperate member groups that all have Admin CP access, or I just have admin accounts along with my characters accounts. [=

One per admin. It keeps up a sense of personal responsibility, I think, rather than this unapproachable hive master feeling.

New user groups that are essentially the same as the member groups, except with access to the admin cp?

Doing this prevents other admins, when pissed off, from say changing the only admin password. Dunno, maybe it comes from my knack of not trusting people due to personal experiences.

As far as one account per admin, a lot of the time people will not want to bother logging in and out all the time. It's just a hassle.

One main, joint account with a password all the admins know. But it's mainly for official topics like the rules and such; we ask our members don't PM it since we only get on if we need to check someone's IP on the online list (usually suspicious guests and whatnot) or add important pinned information and things like that. It's more of a "figurehead" I guess you could say; it adds information but it's not really an active account. There's an admin on during most of our active hours anyway so members and guests can ask a question and get a speedy response through the c-box. =]

two boards with two ways of doing it. on my vampire board, i've got a head admin account by the name of 'ancient'. it's not to be PMd and for the official, permanent topics. then, myself and my coadmin make our IC accounts and give them admin powers. only i know the password for ancient.

on my gang rp, each admin registered with their name/online alias. of course, i registered so i'm the root admin and only i know my password. these are the only accounts that have admin powers. our IC accounts don't but we've got them posted in the side bar so people know when we're online. there's a link to our admin accounts in the side bar, as well. we're usually on them at least every other day since we can only do admin stuff in those accounts [including ads] so the members can either contact us that way or ask whatever it was in the guest services forum, through a pm to our non admin accounts, in the cbox or through AIM or MSN since we talk to many of our members outside of the board settings.

Mousie - July 11, 2008 06:12 AM (GMT)
We do a mix of the 'personal admin account' and the 'character admin account'. My admin/character are the same... because I like to be logged in as Root Admin. I do have a separate 'Mousie' account, but as someone said.. continuously logging in and back out can be a hassle, and people tend to assume I'm admin by the 'headmaster' at the start of the account name.

My co-admin has a nickname account that she does most of her work from, but two of her characters also have admin abilities. I like to be able to see what's going on from all accounts, so even if they can't access the ACP, my other characters have their permissions overriden with Admin view.

Regarding one main account, I just don't like it. When you have a large team, you can't track who did what when chasing up errors, you can't be sure that someone isn't going to flip and change the password, or even delete the board without notice.

I would never, ever give keys to the #1 Account (default root admin) to anyone. It's too hard to get that account back to admin, and there's too much freedom with it. I definitely prefer my admins to have their own accounts, and this way members can also choose who they would rather go to with issues.

RomanHk - July 12, 2008 05:53 AM (GMT)
We run option two. Basically, everyone has their main character as a main admin where it would make sense for them to be posting rules and such and then subsequent characters get sorted into admin groups that reflect the factions. I agree with what Mousie said about accountability with the one main account. Besides, even if one admin gets a PM and another doesn't, it should get back to all staff members if the staff is working right.

Catastrophe86 - July 14, 2008 09:30 AM (GMT)
I'm not a big fan of OOC accounts, because I rarely log on to those: I prefer to be logged in as the character that I intend to post. Thus, if I'm making a game, I create an admin user group and place all the characters that need access to the admin control panel in that particular group. It's essentially the same as the other user groups, but with permission to do more stuff.

Sicaluff - July 16, 2008 02:51 AM (GMT)
Hmm. Not sure which way to vote, so I'm not sure if I shall. Not at the moment, anyway. I've taken a liking to have usergroups for the staff inparticular.

For example, having the Root Admin group called 'Sica', and having all my accounts/characters in that group. So I can access the ACP no matter which account I'm in (AND only I am the Root.) And having another group for the co-admin, and having their accounts in the same group. And same for Mods. I generally have one co-Admin and two Mods. :)

.Ra - July 16, 2008 07:35 PM (GMT)
Each Admin has their own account which always happens to be their character. I like this because I can be RPing and multitask with any Admin duties that I might have.

December, Esq - July 16, 2008 08:10 PM (GMT)
I prefer APP, so I wouldn't use an admin account for that because that's a little . . . pretentious. Thus, on my new RP, I just have one account to house my characters and me.

As far as APC games, I prefer to have one admin account but allow my other characters to have access to the admin CP. Why? 'Cause I'm lazy.

roger349 - July 24, 2008 04:49 PM (GMT)
We have a few admins on Hogwarts: The Revolution, and we all log into the same account. So no separate accounts for each of us. I dunno why, but I feel that it makes it much easier.

AshBeanNun - August 2, 2008 02:43 PM (GMT)
My co-admin and I share an admin account which we use for ACP, PMs from members with questions/problems, and site documentation. All our characters have Admin permissions mask on so we can still discuss things in the Admin forum from whatever account we're in at the time. Since we share all the duties on the site, this is a really clean, unobtrusive, and effective system. I'd find it far more pretentious to have over a dozen admin accounts running around on the same site.
