Title: Adding New Characters
December, Esq - July 11, 2008 12:53 AM (GMT)
They can have as many characters as they want. No limits or requirements. This means that your members can have as many characters as they want without getting a certain number of posts first. So they can essentially join and make 30* characters right off the bat if they choose.
They can have as many characters as they want with a X post requirement before adding a new character. They can have 30 characters if they desire, but they have to have X posts before adding a new one. For example, in order to get the second character, the member has to post 200* times with the first character; in order to get the third character, the member has to post 200 times with the second character.
They can have Y number of characters. No minimum post count to get a new one as long as they do not exceed Y. Right from the beginning they can start off with as many characters as the want as long as it does not exceed the maximum. So if there is a 3*-character limit, they can join with all three characters or they can work on one character at a time.
They can have Y number of characters, but before they can add a new one, they have to get X posts. If Y = 3* and X = 200*, they can have a maximum of 3 characters, but they have to post 200 times with each of the other characters before they can make characters # 2 and 3.
I hope this isn't confusing.
*These numbers are arbitrary; I chose them just as an example and they are not set in stone. Thus, if you prefer a 5-character limit instead of a 3-character limit, simply subsitute "5" in for "3."

I went and voted for "They can have as many characters as they want. No limits or requirements" because it's the most similar to my view on number of characters per person. Really, everyone should know that there needs to be a male/female ratio that's somewhere near equal, but it's difficult to just force people to be a male character without driving guests away because they have to be male. But they should have at least one male character if they have three female ones, obviously, but my view is that if someone wants five characters, they can have five. But if I see that someone has five and they're ignoring two of them, I'll ask if they really need those other two so that others could use the playby, especially if it's one of those playbys that just about everybody wants to use for reasons unknown, like Sophia Bush.
So I just say in my rules, have as many characters as you can handle. If you can keep five characters active then have five characters. If you can only just keep two alive, just have two; don't go having more because someone asked you to. So long as people feel comfortable with the number of characters they have, I don't mind how many they have because it's their choice.

Well, I took the first option as well, but I have a one-character-per-sorting rule. So yes, members can have as many characters as they like, but they can only have one in each grade.

I actually voted for the last one, which I think was supposed to be a joke option, lol! But seriously, on my forum we do only one character per user. We are a very advanced RP forum, so we focus on one character and make it very deep and very full of a variety of stories. I think it is interesting to do that, because it really lets you get to know the person that you created on a whole new level... especially since you are stuck with them ^_^ You'd be surprised how much better characters turn out and how much longer people spend realy thinking about every aspect of them.
Of course, we do allow temporary other characters just in case you get bored with the one you are currently working on and need a bit of a break. Other then that, though, we're a one-character kind of forum ^_^
Seanu - July 11, 2008 01:47 AM (GMT)
Wow. xD I'd never be able to stick with one character. I have ideas for new characters all of the time, so if I was stuck to just one I'd end up trying to find a new forum and then bouncing back and forth between the two of them, making things difficult for myself just because I'm a fool.

I'd go with this one, but instead of going with an actual post count, I'd say they can have Y amount of characters, and then after a certain time frame, if the staff members think they can have another character, then they can go for it. So it's really a "You can have Y amount of characters no matter what, and in a month, if you're still here and active, maybe you can have another one." A lot of it does depend on how fast the RPG moves.

I hate it when people limit how many characters I can have. But if you want to make sure they're going to keep characters active, what I would do is give them a limit of like... 3 and say that if you feel you can keep more active and want another character, send a message to an admin.
bloodless soul - July 11, 2008 03:38 AM (GMT)
I usually run my boards so that members can create as many characters as they want whenever they want, no post count or anything required. The only thing they need to do is keep them all active.
Silver Wolf - July 11, 2008 03:43 AM (GMT)
I didn't vote because none of the options are really in line with the way I see it. You should be able to have as many characters as you want as long as you keep up with them. No, that'sn ot like the first option. The first options says there are no requirements. ;)
If you want to have five characters, great! The more the merrier. Now, you need to prove yourself with your first character before you can have any others. Or I have to know you from another site and know your capabilities. But once you've established that you can handle it, go ahead and create as many characters as you like. All I ask for is an RP sample in response to two of the audition posts; a standard and an action response, as well as a bio prior to posting. I don't normally ask for a history to go with the character because I ifnd that I get the histories as I RP the character, but a pre-fleshed character is great, also. This allows me to see that you've thought the character out a little and basically know where yo uare going with him or her. Making sure you can handle one also ensures that you'll be around to actually play your multiple characters.
Akala - July 11, 2008 03:43 AM (GMT)
That's usually how I run all of mine too. I don't really care how many characters they have and I understand that sometimes you get bored with one or two if you've got more than one and like to play a specific one or whatever. xD It doesn't matter to me unless it's a site that I have set up to do one character per account. Then I care. But most of the time I do sites that are only one account but multiple characters. Wow I hope that made sense.

I say they can have as many as they durned well please. Players on my games play an average of 7 characters, but some play a lot more. I play 25 on one game and 14 on another. They're both original character games, so it's up to them. I don't police them and they don't have to be active with them all (for instance, I have characters in my inventory who aren't yet in any threads, some characters who are more active than others, etc.). They're their characters, I'm not a babysitter, and it is up to them to decide how much they can handle.
Unless they're playing an uber important character (like the leader of an area), I don't get on their back. ;D They can have as many as they are willing to handle.
nadja - July 11, 2008 06:05 AM (GMT)
the only thing i require is that they space out their applications. so, they can register for new character but i ask that they wait about a week to get active with their first one. there's not a real requirement and i allow as many characters as you like [so long as you can keep them all active.]
Catastrophe86 - July 11, 2008 07:09 AM (GMT)
On the new game I'm admining, there's a limit of five characters, but after having reached that limit, you can ask to have more, and if your already established characters are reasonably active, we'll let you have a new one. If you already have five characters and you're not particularly active with any of them, I don't see the reason why I should let you join another semi-inactive character that's posted maximum once a month: that's just annoying to the other players who have to wait ages for their replies.
Joscerelle - July 11, 2008 08:00 AM (GMT)
I'm a firm believer that you should be allowed to have as many characters as you like as long as you can take care of them all. In my RPs and in the RPs that I'm in we have monthly activity checks. If there are characters that aren't working out then you just announce in those checks that you're dropping them.
Usually people don't take more than they can handle, and from past experience those characters that are dropped during the monthly checks are dropped because the RPer is bored of playing them, not because they can't handle it.
It's the cycle of life for a character; some just last longer than others.
sosoclever - July 11, 2008 04:35 PM (GMT)
I used to have a soft limit of three. If people felt they could handle more, then that was fine. Then I had someone who said she was brand new to text-RPGs create eight characters all at once. Then she apparently got really busy at work so all these storylines she set up went comatose. I've changed it to a hard limit of three. Of course, it's also an anonymous game, so if someone really wants more than three, I wouldn't know (unless they're really obvious), but I try not to point that out too often.
If you've got a large game with a lot of players, I think a higher or non-existent limit is probably okay, but my game has never had more than about fifteen players. Having one inexperiened player control a quarter of the characters is just not a good thing.
Panda - July 11, 2008 05:34 PM (GMT)
Eh, I don't have a limit as such, provided members remember that if they apply for them, then they have to play them. I'm quite serious about this and will usually bring it into question. Do they want three more characters when they have 5 already? Why? Are they creating them specifically for another character? Do they have the time? Will existing characters suffer? I want to avoid players that go nuts on character creation and are happy to leave existing players and their storylines in the dust because they're distracted by a new shiny.
Elenlond - July 11, 2008 07:29 PM (GMT)
We allow the members to have as many characters as they want. Most are responsible enough to wait until they're at least active with one before creating a second or third one, and we haven't had any problems yet. Alternatively, if a member hasn't posted at least once IC with their character by the time I move to do account deletions (that's about once a month to once every two months, depending on when I think about it), I'll ask them if they intend to or not. If not, I smoke the account.
Sharpiefan - July 11, 2008 11:40 PM (GMT)
We allow up to four characters on StC, but if someone's posting regularly with all of them and wants a fifth, we'll allow it. Within reason. But they must all be fairly active characters.
Ezzelin - July 12, 2008 12:00 AM (GMT)
Ahmn. Members have the most freedom with their first character.
We divide it up by gender and level of 'canon' plot involvement.
We allow one 'plot' character per person and we encourage people to alternate gender when they make new characters. Join as a female, next character is male, and so on and vice versa. Seems to work out okay.
PhoenixLily - July 12, 2008 12:13 AM (GMT)
Well..I play mostly canon sites (X-Men) and it's rather important that members stay active with whatever character they play, *especially* if it's a canon. Simply for the fact that at least on the sites I frequent, Every Character is important and has a huge role/impact in the game. Plus, If a guest shows up, and wants a character that has technically been taken, but the member hasn't played them for a month, I have to be able to say, "Yeah bud, you lost out do to inactivity and interest from another player. Use this opprotunity as a Lesson"
My site has rules somewhat similar to the first one. I don't care how many characters you play, however you slack off on one in favor of another, and I will be shooting you a PM asking if you are still interested in the other character, or if they need to go up for adoption.

What she said. I completely agree. I'll allow players to have as many characters as they want as long as they can handle them all and play them all equally.
