Title: Helping Newbies To Roleplaying

Paradox - July 7, 2008 06:17 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone,

So, apparently someone saw the one ad I put up and now my board has one more member! Yay!

Anyways, she seems articulate enough, but she's never rp'ed before. She seems to understand the application process (and I can help her with character creation) but is there anything else that you think would be helpful in this matter?

Oh, just to clarify, I don't think she's ever roleplayed before, period.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Well my advice is to put some documentations from here on your own board. There are some great documentations here which explain what roleplaying is, how it's done, about character creation, and lots of more cool stuff ^_^.

Further the best way to learn it is by doing it, try to get into an RP with her after you get her approved. Link her to some other examples etc.

Good luck and I just wanna say I think it's great you want to put your time into teaching somebody else to RP. It's one of the rarer qualities ^^!

Well, we were all newbies once, right? :) We all have to start somewhere.
Good idea, though, I'll link her here if she has any problems.

I guess...don't hover too much, but let her know that she's always free to ask for help. I think linking her to threads and examples and stuff would be great.

...and I say this because I've been thinking about introducing my little brother to roleplaying, and he's only 13. xD

Remember what you were like when you were new? I thought I was hot stuff (pshaw. I'm still hot stuff *points at login*). Just be nice & helpful and stuff. Really, unless she makes mistakes, there's nothing else for you to do.

If you say she's articulate, she should be just fine. Roleplaying isnt too hard really to teach and especially when they know how to write. I know i threw my 21 year old cousin into a group roleplay with only an example for him to get used to [i know, i was so mean >.> but i tried to make it clear to him].

And he did very well! He brought in this kickbutt character and understood the very basics. And his exit was amazing, he got his character shot in the most descriptive way. It was very cool.

So yes, newbies are fun to roleplay with sometimes because they're fresh and sometimes bring in things you've never heard of. Just show her a couple of basics and what to do and not do.

Seeing as how i learned, she'll take it on after you show her what to do, her character will be fine ^-^

If she understands the application process, she should be fine. We've had a lot of newbies come through Tally, and they seem to pick it up fairly quickly. Just be around to answer any questions, I highly recommend having documentation on your board not only for this new member's sake -- but for the sake of anyone who comes and is mildly confused -- and let her browse through what has already been done and posted.

People seem to learn RP by example, it's not a terribly hard concept to understand.
