Title: Calling All Dreamers
nadja - July 5, 2008 04:08 PM (GMT)
so, i was sitting on my bed, humming a song when the idea was formed inspired by it.
what about an rp based around a dream world? i know that there are already a few out there but i've got the main idea of the board plotted out an so i wanted to know what other people thought about it.
it's all a dream world where people can pretty much see the world as they like but, for those who are just coming across the world, there will be details about how the world is seen until they can learn to control their dreams. pretty much, it's a no applications board where the people go to sleep in the real world to escape their lives and end up in the dream world. from there, it's up to the player.
there will be two sides to this board, one with the 'dream city' and one with the 'nightmare city'. when you sign up, you will have to tell us what your nightmare is and that can be played out in the nightmare city, which will be a mirror image of the dream city but the opposite, as well.
from there, i don't really think that there's going to be too much of a plot but i think that there will be boardwide effects stemming from the fact that there is a darkness that might try to take over the dream world.
anything goes, you can be whatever you want to be and you can always change things up [you just need to let the people you're posting with know in the thread]. of course godmodding is an issue i've been considering and i already know that i will be banning the ability to control other's free will and there's a catch for anyone wanting to do anything dangerous in the worlds like fighting or bunjee jumping without a bunjee - if you die in the dream world, you die in the real world. the same thing will go for getting injured.
the board will be PG-13 because they're dreams and i don't think that it should go any further than that.
depending on the feedback i get from here, i might be looking for staff members, as well. so let me know what you think. yes? no? what problems do you see with the idea? do you think it would be a board you'd be interested in?

i had a similar idea before, but with slight difference. it sounds interesting but when i started to think about how to control (cause you know there are always some oblivious members who don't remember the situation of the site), i got a headache. i guess things could turn into two extreme way if not handle well: either the site became too boring because of over control, or everything was out of control and destroyed the site's original idea.
but if you really are going to make the site, i would like to help out. :] cause i'm creative. haha.

yeah, that's what i thought about but i figured that setting up a few guidelines for the board's genre would keep that from happening. like... you can't just go off and create whatever you want. you can only bend the world around you. so, you can't create a building out of thin air but you can create a door on the wall of an already existing building.

If you are interested in this idea, I would love an rpg based on NIGHTS into Dreams. Its a comic book series and video game ...

it definitely sounds interesting but i don't know enough about the board, even with the information i could find online, to be able to do it justice, i think. i mean, if i were to base a board on anything done before me, i'd like to feel that i know it well enough. i want to have played the game or read the book or seen the movie a millions times, if that makes any sense.

I just opened a board called Exist, where dreaming will play a major role in the plot.
It's kind of a horror/fantasy; a parallel world is merging with our own, and people are seeing shadowy figures all around town, in reflections, or captured on film, etc. Many people think they must be ghosts, and it's possible they are; the scariest thing about these "Others" is that no one knows exactly what they are, or why they are appearing.
On top of RPing these ghostly advances on the town, members will also RP their dreams; They can choose to create whatever world they wish when they sleep, to have recurring dreams or different ones each night. But as time goes on, and the invasion of these shadowy figures accelerates in the real world, people find their subconscious open to encroachment as well; more and more often their dreams begin to lead them to a new dreamscape, one they've never seen before, one in which these shadowy 'ghosts' are present in. But more strange, one in which others seem to be dreaming of as well... A place of convergence, a bridge between dreams, where characters can run into one another and explore the dream world together.
It's a fun new site, Twilight zone meets stephen king meets So Weird. :)
And the idea of convergent dreams is something I've always wanted to attempt.

sounds cool... but that kind of didn't answer any of my questions.
i'm not looking for a board like that to join, i'm looking to start a board based completely on dreaming. like, a person falls asleep and finds themself there.

Well, to answer some of your questions then:
yes, I'd probably join a board like that, (provided I had the time)
Possible problems I could see happening: Godmodding, as was mentioned; members with big egos and no limitations could be quick to take advantage of their dream worlds to produce god-like powers in their characters. Building a site like this means putting a lot of faith in your members to be responsible and share the limelight, so to speak.
Also, working out how members will deal with meeting one another in the dream world. If they can (eventually) see the world around them as whatever they like, what happens when two dreamers come together? Do they 'compete' for their perceived world to be dominant, producing a clash or blend of their two worlds? Or do they simply each see their own world, regardless of the other's perceptions? (which could cause major confusion among the members). Maybe try going for something along the lines of "What Dreams may Come"?
And then, the layout of the dream world vs the nightmare world; are they both present, separated geographically? Or are they overlapping, similar to the Silent Hill games? How do members move back and forth between them?

Enter Morpheus.
And then the entire cast of The Sandman

-goes to answer the relative posts...-
yeah, again, i'm working out ways to stop the godmodding and it will just have to be a trial by error deal. there will still be rules to deal with the IC posts. yeah, i need to have faith in people, especially with it being a no application board but this is the first no application board i've run so i 'm putting a lot of faith in my members, now, as it is.
again, there are outlines that have to be followed and then, mostly, it will have to be left up to the two people posting. like... person one is talking about being outside and person two shows up. person two might see the sky as blue but person one might have seen the sky as green. it's all in their own personal perception and the changes are not so drastic that it would have a serious influence on the other person. still, i can understand what you mean. it is very difficult to control those things but i want to leave a lot up to the members of the board.
of all of the movie referenced so far [sandman, what dreams may come, matrix, twilight] i've only seen one of them and that's silent hill. the problem with that is that there would be trouble determining when the boards would switch. the idea between the two worlds was that it is a geographic point and, also, based on the state of mind one is in. like... if you enter a dream stressed out and worried, you would end up in the nightmare land and then would have to work your way out of it.

Whoa, that sounds pretty cool... not sure if I would do it, however. It sounds a teensy bit too complex for my tiny tiny mind.
stryker - July 6, 2008 04:35 AM (GMT)
that sounds like a very interesting idea except, would the two RPers communicate to each other in dream or something? o.O

nadja - July 7, 2008 02:10 AM (GMT)
don't worry, SJ, i've been writing up threads to help explain things as best as possible. doing it in this thread would be pointless to post all of that work so i try to give the cliff notes version.
what do you mean, stryker? like... would they be able to talk to one another? it's not like it's their own personal dream. it's a world for dreamers so they would be running into people from all over the world in one of the two cities. now, if they chose to interact with one another outside of the city, its possible for them to remember their real lives and exchange that information in order to get in touch that way.
