Title: Yay! We're Making A Foru- Not..

Squirrelsy - July 1, 2008 07:43 AM (GMT)
I am very upset and on the verge of just stop making forums. =l Mind you, I'm somewhat good at coding but suck at graphics. I also tend to provide pretty good plots and all, ones that really might capture interest of a lot of people; HOWEVER, when a lot of people say they sound interested and would like to join such a site, I don't see them coming along and even really giving any feedback. I'll round up like.. a handful of people and when the site's actually 75% done, I don't see one person coming along. o_o

I post to try and gain staff and the like and they're just.. gone!

I HATE relying on people to do stuff for me as it's ALWAYS graphics. A banner even! I am graphically impaired and my stuff looks -horrible.- RCR doesn't really help because they don't really like doing site requests unless it's some canon based forum like freakin' Harry Potter or something. >/ Doesn't matter how many times I bump either. And that's all I really need is graphics. ._.

Currently, I'm working on two forums- a post WWIII one with super soldiers ( or rather mutants and the like ) and a Guilty Gear one. For the latter, I have a handful of people. Whether or not they'll actually stick by when it's all done is beyond me and again, I'm having to rely on someone to provide graphics. She procrastinates but darn it, she's the only person I know that does pretty good pictures.

    Think I've covered everything.. Are their any guides to making a forum? Something that could point out what I'm doing wrong? Other than waiting on stingy artists to actually even LOOK at my request. I'm not even picky really! I'll take practically anything as long as it's DECENT. I've even noted this! What is wrong with people!? ;~;

I prefer The Dark Arts when I'm requesting graphics; they're a nice, talented group and I've only ever had one request that didn't get picked up. I'm not a fan of RCR at all, personally.

Rcr scares me. It just .. does. Recently I've had my old gallery moved from the graveyard, but I don't even know if I'm going to update it more than once (I haven't even bothered yet) because the people there strike me as pretentious. >__> Like if you ask anyone how they made something, they'll hit you over the head with their keyboard so they don't have to tell you their "trade secrets." (That's what it feels like, anyway.) Plus, I feel pressured to keep my stuff updated .. and I don't like pressure unless I'm getting something for it, like a grade (school), or money (job).

Anyway, that's my mini-rant for the day.

I don't think it's you so much, Squirrelsy, as it is other people. I had a board that was open for two years, although it was only really active for one, and then had a couple bouts of inactivity, even a couple hiatus's. I tried to reopen it on its two-year anniversary, but it was a little hard when everyone who said they were going to be active hardly showed up. o_O Granted, I was lazy too, but at least I started posting T__T mehh. It was just a big mess.

I can take up private requests for you? (coughyesiamsooffering--examples! just pm me)

-hug!- It'll be okay. ^^ Work hard at it and you'll get it going. I don't think you're alone on this, I think it happens to a lot of people ..

Aaand I need to check out this Dark Arts place. :o

That's too true. I totally agree.

Anyway, I often feel the same as you but to the best of my knowledge, for your graphics stuff, isn't RPG-D opening up a graphics section? ^_^ I'm sure people here will be much better in replying and getting your work done than at RCR, we are just awesomer peepz in general. (Just kidding!) ^_^ As for the rest of it, I feel you there too. Work hard and then no one can blame you. :) Good luck!

I can't say what TDA is like from an artist's perspective, because I am not nearly talented enough to be making graphics for other people. But I like the place as a regular, requesting member. :pink:

Not to go totally off-topic, but yes, we are. We have a few things up our sleeves that we plan on getting set up quite soon, and I think people are going to be interested to see what kind of new services we offer. ^ - ^ Including a place for requests.

First off, I have to say, being graphically inept myself, I know how much of a drag that can be. RCR scares me too; I haven't even found the stomach to even put in a request yet so you're much braver than I am. But there's nothing I can say about that place that hasn't already been said so...

On to part two, about the interest polling threads. It's for exactly what you wrote that I rarely respond to them. Sometimes I can't help it though and reply. I can tell you the reason why I lose interest: it's because I move on to something else that grabs my attention for the week. I'll be heavily into it and then burn myself out on it. I think it's better to hope for the best but expect the worst if you're going to attempt such things instead of polling passing interest.

While RcR might be intimidating, there's no reason why you can't download GIMP and make yourself a 750x200 banner by following one of their many tutorials. They're all easy and require no talent to follow them. You end up producing graphics that look brill with little to no effort. Although bare in mind that RCR only do two variations on graphic tutorials: colourisation and blend. Still, you can use these to decent effect and no one will ever know you're a graphics-tard like RomanHK -flee-

It is far easier to attempt a bit of DIY than it is to get a stranger to do some work for you.

Good point.

Squirrelsy - July 1, 2008 06:27 PM (GMT)
Wow. Lots'a ideas and feedback from all this. I'll definitely check out that Dark Arts place and silent cacophony, I'll take up that offer. :3 As for RCR, I never liked them to begin with. I don't like how they do some of their stuff and have had less than half of my requests actually filled. There was even one time where I'd asked for a set along with a few icons and the artist that picked it up never supplied the icons. T_T

Glad to know that it's not ME doing something wrong but it's still a pain in the @$$ to find a staff. I've had bad experience with them, since one time my co-admin basically made the RE forum FUBAR. =l She was even mean to both present and new members! Needless to say, I blocked her from the site when I got back ( as I was having internet problems ) and gave the forum to someone that wanted an RE board.

As for making graphics myself, I would at least try but I don't even have PSP anymore. I've had to reformat my comp twice and didn't manage to get it back onto my computer yet- if ever.

I'm sorry you have such a hard time with this stuff. I know how you feel. Ive had a few sites myself that've gone dead because people won't show up when they say they will.

I'd definitely love to make some graphics for you if you want. Just pm me if you want and I can send you some examples and stuff.

I use GIMP, as do a lot of graphic designers I know. It's free. Just look it up on GIMP. It's also pretty easy to work if you'd rather not rely on others.

Panda - July 1, 2008 09:19 PM (GMT)
GIMP is freeware. Google it.

No excuses, now. XD

Sharpiefan - July 1, 2008 11:03 PM (GMT)
I have the GIMP and want to learn some graphics skills myself; does anyone know of somewhere I could go for tutorials for it?

Panda - July 2, 2008 04:38 PM (GMT)
Deviantart.com and RPG-D's affiliate, RcR. 80% of their tutorials are designed to work in 'all' graphics programmes.
