Title: Bored Staff?

Shade - June 28, 2008 12:52 AM (GMT)
In the past I have never really seen a need to list out duties or give specific jobs to certain members of the staff. They all knew their responsibilities and such but, very little action seemed to be taken. I believe it was mostly because they didn't know where to start or what 'exactly' they were supposed to do. So I found myself stuck with staff members who basically sat there and made themselves comfortable with doing nothing.

Now, for the past long while I have been working on an rpg of mine and I have reached a point where I seriously think I will need some active help from staff members since I have college to deal with also. While I could simply manage on my own or with staff members who have nothing to do, I'd rather not run myself ragged. So I've considered and started working on a sketchy list of jobs in which most of them are small and everyone can pitch in. Perhaps I could form a schedule in which some things need to be done to perhaps maintain some order. Like every Monday, stats need to be updated. Awards are given out every first Friday of the month.

I've also considered making a forum called "staff jobs" in our staff lounge category. This is to provide a pinned summary of each job and then each staff member makes their own thread where all the jobs they chose or were assigned will be listed. Perhaps their jobs could change each month. Of course some of the smaller jobs will be shared by more than one staff member.

My whole idea of this is to get organized. So that when my site has a lot of different things going on, there would be less chaos and staff members will know what is needed of them to do. I believe it will make things run a bit smoother also.

Below is a list of the jobs I have formed so far. Some of them might be fitted for my site only so not all of them will seem to make sense or fit into most situations. I would greatly appreciate if others could suggest jobs or add onto the already existing descriptions of the jobs I've listed. I'd also like to know what you think about the ideas I've expressed. Thank you in advance.

QUOTE

Indexer
This person or group of persons is in charge of keeping things organized. They move/organize topics if need be, delete spam.

Welcomer
Staff as a whole, is to be welcoming and inviting. It is our job as a whole to be as inviting for new members as possible.

Bio Templates Checker
This person reads through the extended Bio Templates in the character development forums. The whole idea is to check and see if the character is still within the rules of the time period and the plot. If anything seems to be wrong and you are not sure, as for another opinion in the staff or send out a mass pm to all staff members to see what they think before you approach the person. Always ask that they reply so you know they got your message and understand.

Submission Checker
Their job is the same as those who check the extended Bio Templates. They are to make sure all the needed things are filled out. If anything is out of place or missing, they are to contact the member via personal message and send them a copy of their submission form and tell them what needs to be fixed and that they need to go back and edite their post. Always ask that they reply so you know they got your message and that they understand.

Forum Manager
Each member of the staff will be given a forum or group of forums to manage. This include deleting double topics, spam(if the indexer hasn't gotten it), and reading the topics to make sure the members are abiding by the rules.

Stats / Lists and Counts Manager
This person, most likely will be an admin who can get into the AdminCP. They are to update the stats as often as possible. They are also in charge of indexing face claims if the Indexer hasn't gotten to it.

Activity
This person will keep track of who is active and who is not. They will create a list every other month, of the people who haven't posted or been on since the last time they did an activity check. If a character's account gets deleted, their Submission and Bio Template (if any) is to be moved into the inactive forums in the staff category. A mass email will be sent out to each inactive member and they will be given a week to reply before getting deleted.

To explain the submission and the bio templates checkers. I plan on having my site be "acceptance and application free". So the first thing the person will do when they join is submit their character and then hop right into posting if they want - granted they will be contacted if anything seems wrong with their submission and they will be asked to fix it. The Bio Templates are for those who have submitted their character and want to make a more in depth profile for their character.

I hope i got everything...

Have you talked to your staff about this first? I would think the first thing to do would be to bring up the idea with them. They are your staff because they are there to help you. If they can't help you, they have no place on your staff.

Find out which ones have the time, energy, and patience to help you out and keep them as your staff. If your role play is doing well, then you should have no problem finding staff members that will help you.

Past experience has shown me that, if you don't know the staff personally and haven't worked with them before, it's a very good idea to outline each staff member's tasks carefully and clearly. I think it's great that you're going to do that for your site. Just make sure that your new staff gets some input into their job responsibilities, since each person has different strengths and weaknesses. Also, once you become comfortable with them and build up a basis of trust, it may be possible for you to give the staff more or different responsibilities, so that they don't get bored with their jobs.

Good luck with your site! I'm excited to see it. :pink:

Yeah I plan on letting them pick a few they would be interested in and then ballancing out things depending on how many staff members I will end up having. I won't straight out assign something unless requested to do so in a case where the person doesn't really care to choose themselves. And yes, over time, if I see they are great at one thing, I might gradually make them in charge of a certain job while still having others to pitch in if need be.

Thanks for the advise, and that you think it might be beneficial. But yeah, I don't have any known rp buddies who are up to helping me in this one - mainly because I haven't asked yet. XD

Yes, I'll need all the luck I can get. Hopefully it will be open in the next month or so. :p
