Title: Purging Your Ad Forum?
Description: When do you do it?

Melissa - June 22, 2008 05:05 PM (GMT)
Okay, my board as been around for one year now and we are looking to do some purging when it comes to the bussier forums. My question is do you guys prune out your ad forum? And when do you do it. I know there has to be a lot of dead forums on my board but I don't want to go through and check all of them? Any suggestions?

I think it depends on how you have your forum set up. Mine has a masterlist of ads, and all ads are sorted by last post date, so I just go down the list or go to the oldest posts and check them, depending on my mood. And I just do it when I feel like it, or when I'm procrastinating. :pink:

Delegate the task out if it's too overwhelming for one person or if you don't have the time. I check my ad board once a month for dead games and delete those posts. It keeps things from becoming overwhelming, and I hate when the most populated board on the forum is the advert one, besides.

I'm honestly just too lazy to. lol

I'm wondering whether it is better to keep all my ads Harry POtter related? I havent linked back on some ads cos Im just not sure about them but Ive left their ads on our site for the moment because I dont want to be unfair either. It is a tough one alright.

I guess the only thing is to go through them one by one when you have the time and purge them that way if needs be.

Every so often I go into mine and delete everything older than 60 days. Most RPGs don't last more than a few months, and if they do last more than that, chance are they'll continue to advertise and repost their ad with me anyway. Most people browsing in the ads for an RPG to join won't look past the first few pages anyway so I see no point in keeping the old ones around or wasting time checking each one to see if it's still active. I'd rather devote that same time to improving the rest of my game or RPing in it or advertising.

It's not really worth it for me. Maybe some day when I'm really bored or something, but honestly, I don't set it as a goal on my to-do list.

I've only just added a Guest Ad section to my board and never thought of the organization of it. But I think what will happen is I'll separate them somehow. Either on the month/year they were posted or type of site, I'm not suure yet. Possibly both if there are enough ads. As of now, there is only one on one site and two on the other.

I just delete those ads that are older than thirty days. Then usually there are about 110 ads left in the forum. I don't like to let the ad crowded my forum, honestly, who would go to that back to look for an ad? If I deleted their ad, and if their site is still around, they are welcome to post again. So they wouldn't break the 'no double posting' rule and I could post my site's ad on their site again too. lol

Uh never. The first version of our board ran for two years, and my fellow admin and I never purged our ad forum. Who cares. We let people advertise as many times as they want, so long as we can do the same on their forum, so I don't care for past ads really.

*Shrugs* I don't think it's an issue to go through them at all.

ShadowAngel - June 24, 2008 02:13 AM (GMT)
I went throught them when I started making a list of all the sites and realized many of them had died. I'll probably try to check the older posts in the next month or two.

wynnyelle - June 24, 2008 02:31 AM (GMT)
Well, if people want to go digging in the old ads on my forum they can be my guest. The best ones are usually on the first few pages, though...after that, a high percentage of them are dead.

Panda - June 24, 2008 04:23 PM (GMT)
Wait...I'm supposed to purge my ad forum?

Oh ****.

-Runs off to do so-

I don't, basically. I'm lazy and we have a LOT of adverts and I don't have the time to set aside to do something like this and I doubt my staff would appreciate me going, 'here, do this inane task for me!'

I will probably do it next time I'm bored, just to clear out all those inactive ones, because I do know how annoying it is to use an ad forum to find a game, only for most of them to be dead.

Now I feel guilty. ;_;

AliceUnrequited - June 24, 2008 11:07 PM (GMT)
Haha, I really just don't do it either.
If I am going through stuff and find something inactive I'll 86 it, but in all reality that part of my site tends to get neglected.

More important things to worry about, you know?

wynnyelle - June 28, 2008 12:21 AM (GMT)
Purging your ad forum isn't something you're supposed to or not supposed to do, and all in all it makes little difference whether you do it or not. It's a matter of personal choice.

nadja - June 28, 2008 12:34 AM (GMT)
i set up my ad forum to list everything alphabetically. i then have two master lists. one is a list of the ads posted on my site and the other list is of where i've posted my ads. once a month, give or take, i'll go through the list that i have where i've posted my ads and, if the ad is gone or the board is offline, i delete their ads. that way, i can keep the ad forum free of the junk and help the boards still online don't have to fight with all of the clutter to get recognized.
