Title: Finding A Good Chatbox

Melissa - June 20, 2008 04:25 PM (GMT)
Hey, does anyone know a good shotbox? I am looking for one that dealls with high volume traffic.

I use and highly recommend Yshout, but it requires file system access and moderate coding abilitiy to customize.

Augustine - June 20, 2008 05:24 PM (GMT)
http://cbox.ws/

There's no posting limit (like Shoutmix only allows something like 60 posts to it an hour). It's customizable enough for most purposes, and offers some good security features for free. For $2 a month, you could upgrade and a whole slew of other options are available.

I used to use cbox, but for some reason they got rid of the refresh button on the regular free type, and it annoyed my members to no end. So I just changed over to ShoutMix, which we're going to try out and decide if we like it. If not, we can put the cbox back in.

I hadn't heard about that posting limit, though, August. o.O

If you look over Shoutmix's features page, you'll see that it's a maximum of 60 posts per hour before you max out. My group reached that our first evening the Shoutbox was implemented, and I immediately paid the $20 annual fee for a "premium" version. It is much, much nicer and well worth the cost. Though I'm always on the lookout for something better, I did about two weeks of research on Cbox v. Shoutmix and the latter won out.

Ah, gotcha, thanks. I did scan through that page of features but that one must have escaped me. I guess we'll just have to see if it ends up being a problem, and if so, we'll just go back to cbox or find an alternate chat widget. But those are the two that seem most popular, in my experience.

My adivce for a chatbox/shoutbox/etc.... Use chatango, it's easy to use, manage, and I'm seeing them used quite a bit lately for chatboxes. http://chatango.com

I recently left a RP board I wanted to help build because it was loading soooo slowly for me it made it really hard to post anything in the reg. forums. I think the chat box might of been the reason....

I'm not very knowledgeable about these sorts of things, but it's been my experience that a lot of scripts slow down the loading of a site. Or, for that matter, an image heavy skin/layout. I suppose it might have something to do with it, but RPG-D doesn't load any faster than my site with a cbox for me.

Yah, Cbox is really weird with the "join" thing now. I most definitely prefer the good old "refresh". Alas, I'm on a search for a new widget now too.

I was introduced to planet minibox and am in love with it. It even includes tabbed conversations by clicking on a name so that you can have private conversations with people in the C-box. I am currently in love with it, and recommend a looksee.

Augustine - June 20, 2008 09:03 PM (GMT)
Planet Minibox looks pretty cool, but you can only have a max of 20 users online at once. Granted, having so many members online at once wouldn't be quite so common (and even less would even bother to say anything) but that could be a potential problem for large forums.

All in all, it looks pretty neat!

Ditto on the disappearance of "refresh". I really preferred it with Refresh. Now I have to reload the whole friggin page just to see if any new messages have popped up. Despite this, it's still a serviceable cbox.

.chris - June 24, 2008 02:55 AM (GMT)
Well... actually, on cbox the refresh is gone, but there is that 'join' button; so, if you press it, the chat puff... refreshes. At least on one of the boards I play at, it works like this *shrugs*

Actually, my cbox still has a "refresh" button. But I made it a while ago...
If you don't want to shell out money for a shoutbox, cbox works pretty well. I've never heard of Planet Minibox though; looks neat. :]

Yeah, my Cbox still has its refresh button >>; And I love my little Cbox; it works great and people use it.

I really like
"chatango.com"

It lets me use words that are otherwise starred out.
If one person posts too quickly, however - say ten posts in a one minute period - they are warned and banned from the chat for fifteen minutes.

Other then that I've had no problem with it, at all, and adore it.

Hera - June 25, 2008 10:06 PM (GMT)
I made my c-box in May and it has a refresh button ... so I don't know why yours wouldn't! Weird.

Spiral - June 26, 2008 05:18 AM (GMT)
Mine had that same problem so I just reinstalled it and I had refresh back.

castaway - June 26, 2008 05:37 AM (GMT)
I reinstalled mine, but I didn't get refresh back :( Ah well, we're going to stick with the cbox anyway. The Shoutmix limitations just were not going to work with the activity level on my forum during the busier hours of the evening.
