Title: Really, Really Like Bonechilling Good Threads
Description: when was the last time you had one?

PhoenixLily - June 20, 2008 05:54 AM (GMT)
Tonight...and into this morning...it's the only reason I am still up and have work in four and a half hours. It is on my X-Men site, and I am posting as Jean Grey to an excellent writer who is playing XMS's Logan. It is absolutly chilling because it has been sooooooo long since I have felt so completely out of control of a thread, and so excited by the notion. This thread right now could literally end in a fight that would level half of the mansion, and I don't really think that I would mind much. I in fact almost expect it to.

Now it could simply be because I am in the midst of this thread, and the adrenaline is kind of rushing, but I honestly believe that this thread is one of those that has so much history and backstory underneath it and so much physical tension, I would feel remiss in trying to sleep on it. Mind you, this is the first time I have ever played with this particular player. It's like one of those situations that you kind of talk about, but you never really get the chance to take the character there because no one threatens them, and makes you as a writer step out of your personal comfort zone. So in the long run you have a nice pretty board with nice pretty threads, and nice pretty characters, but no real emotion, or tension.

So, I'm babbling, but does anyone get what I am saying? Anyone at all?

Dusti - June 20, 2008 08:35 PM (GMT)
Good on you! This is what all RPers should aspire to!

Elenlond - June 20, 2008 10:07 PM (GMT)
I haven't had a thread like that in a long time x.x But I know what you mean - I've had a few that just make me shudder inside and I get really excited when replies come in. Too bad that those tend to be the threads where the other writer takes three weeks to respond >>;

Panda - June 20, 2008 10:15 PM (GMT)
Yes. I know exactly.

I'm in this thread at the moment--also an X-Men one, and I'm roleplaying gradually (as in, this thread started in January) with two other people. Life and things got in the way for two of them but it's progressing in such a way that I find myself itching to read it when it's replied to. Normally I don't read a thread until I am ready to reply, otherwise I lose momentum, but I will read this immediately, whether I reply in a week, or right then. They both do exactly what I imagined, without me having to tell them.

It hit me pretty suddenly that these people are epic at what they do. I mean there's good, and there's...awesome. It's why it has been going for like...9/10 years? despite the posting rate being painfully slow, They do nothing by halves and that I'm incredibly lucky to have the honour of playing with people of this calibre. It does leave me feeling, however, like I still have a long way to go.

The idea was a simple one. Malice would, through various connections between herself and other villains, become jealous of a partnership that has formed between two unlikely people. One who wouldn't say boo to a goose, and the unpredictable Creed. It's a hostage/kidnapper kind of situation really but that's neither here nor there. Malice envies what she sees as Creed-and-his-pet and torments said 'pet' to the point of possessing Creed to rip her to ribbons.

It started out as just being a mind-f*** and ended up being this huge, scarring, other-power-manifesting sort of deal. Unscripted beyond the basics and I don't even know if my character will live. I don't even mind. It's awesome.

I love psychic players. I don't have to tell them what I want because they're already on the same wavelength as me. Admittedly, I've been playing this game since '98 but I only started playing with this one player in 2004 and the other 6 months ago. It rolls with the punches, it keeps me interested, It's visual, scary, traumatic and so freaking good that we're all pushed to contribute something bigger and better to the mix.

They are completely awesome--it's a great experience--but I like having my not-so-mind blowing threads too, in order to keep me grounded. That way I'm not running around replying to all 7 threads one after another after another on a daily basis, just so I can keep the mojo going.

Atricea - June 20, 2008 10:54 PM (GMT)
I'm having a great thread right now... my board is often much about relationsships (both romantic, but also friendly, hostile and children/parents and so on) but also drama and some politics... there's really always a lot going on, but it's all just so deep and yeah... drama drama... and then I have this nutcase character, who has met a few times before with another sort of nutcase. They're just really great together because they're so weird, and hate each other so much and so deeply that it's almost the same as love. And they're just the most comic and fun couple on our entire board I think. Me and the other player chat while we wait for the other to post, and we just sit here laughing in each end of the IM because we're having fun with these two - it's great :D

Silvae - June 21, 2008 01:53 AM (GMT)
I have these threads all the time. I'm not a fan of the mundane threads, I need something to thicken the plot.

I had one blood-curdling thread recently wherein my character, a kind of extremeist vigilante figure, holds a man at gunpoint in his manor before killing him in front of his son. It was a really creepy thread because I'd never seen this darker side of my character before then, though I knew it existed.

I'm in another sequence of threads presently that has me really excited. A character of mine met another character, whom I thought he would absolutely loathe, but they clicked immediately. I only like romance in certain situations, and only if there's enough plot surrounding to meaten up the story. The romance isn't perfect, either, which I like. I really didn't think they'd get along at all (and sometimes they don't) but it's cool to feel like my character has completely run off from me and I have no control.

Lastly, every thread I've ever played out in Dark Moon has been bonechilling, but that's because DM in general is just thrilling to me. Numnum.

Everyone should have threads like these. It really keeps you motivated to post every day.

Keijukainen - June 24, 2008 11:58 AM (GMT)
Really good threads are so much fun. The last thread that qualifies as "really good" was several weeks ago. It was a funeral thread for roughly a third of Port Royal's marine garrison, following the mutiny. The core of it was how the characters were reacting to and dealing with the fact that they were burying their mates. It had a huge impact on later events as well, even though that was more of a secondary thought next to the stark emotions of the characters involved.

I loved writing for that thread and was sorry when it ended, even though it had a great ending.

Sharpiefan - June 24, 2008 11:56 PM (GMT)
I guess I've been really lucky. I've had a couple of these. One was a shooting competition between one of my characters and another player's, 'judged' by a third. We actually semi-planned it, so we were playing Rock, Paper, Scissors behind the scenes: each of the competitors PMing the judge with one of the three options, and the judge would then come on in chracter with the result. And it was nail-btingly close: literally a tie up until the last 'shot' (we were doing best of five). I was on the edge of my seat the whole thread!

The other one was over the weekend; one character was on trial for apparently assaulting another, when it was a set-up and we had to get him off. That was pretty cool as well.

PhoenixLily - June 25, 2008 01:09 AM (GMT)
that rock paper scissors idea is an excellent one...Mind if i borrow that at some point in time?

December, Esq - June 25, 2008 05:28 PM (GMT)
Every once in awhile I'll get one, but it requires me to interract w/ the characters and members of the board for awhile before it happens. So usually I have to be on the board for a relatively extended length of time. . . .

MelioraAdmin - June 26, 2008 06:26 PM (GMT)
I'm too picky to ever say that I've been involved in a magnificent thread. Not because I won't acknowledge the greatness of my RPing partners, but because I'm never satisfied with my own posts. My main issue is that I've spread myself too thin, so I can't focus all of my attention on a few threads at one or two different sites.

I am, however, madly in love with a couple of plots that I've been involved in. It's terribly cliche that most of them have evolved into romances, but who doesn't love the drama of two characters developing such a strong bond? I'll explain the plots I'm playing through right now that I absolutely love. They're just a lot of fun, and that's all I'm looking for in my RP experience. Improving my writing is just a perk. ;)

Natalie and Riley
Riley is a man in his late twenties with way more war experience than he ever wanted. He lived in a land called Carias for most of his life, and fought in a rather long war that his side eventually won. During the war he met my character, Dunquareiel, and they formed a very strong friendship. When she feared that their relationship was getting a bit too close, she fled the land via a lovely vortex. Riley had followed her when he found of that she had left, but he did not catch up in time to prevent her from going into the vortex. Foolishly, he followed her and ended up in Meliora.

While traveling in Meliora, Riley met an adorable young woman named Natalie. She is an orphan who was taken in by the priests of the air goddess (my character), and raised to eventually become a priestess. Just before she was to be made a priestess, the head priests/priestesses decided that she should spend a year away from the city to experience the world (so she would know what she was giving up). After these two met, Riley guided Natalie to the nearest town. They were separated, and met up a few months later. Riley offered to be Natalie's guide around Meliora. They're currently traveling to all sorts of interesting places.

The drama: Well, they're sort of getting a bit closer than they expected. Riley's been spending his time in Meliora looking for Dunquareiel whom he loves madly even now when it seems that they will never see each other again. Natalie's obviously not supposed to get involved with anyone as she's to become a priestess when she returns to the temple. Now she's doubting her future, and Riley's having to rethink just about everything.

Vadeem and Narvaeria
Vadeem and Narvaeria are both members of the "bad guys" in a war between nations. Vadeem belongs to a secret guild, and Narvaeria works for it indirectly. When they met, Narvaeria was supposed to be meeting a contact who was going to go with her to the enemy country to work on an assignment. The contact never shows, and she is forced to ask Vadeem for help. He agrees to be the replacement. They're now at an outpost on the border preparing for their journey.

The drama: They don't get along at all. Vadeem doesn't approve of Narvaeria's methods (she's a borderline sociopathic spy/assassin who isn't at all opposed to using her womanly charms to get what she wants), and he isn't very shy about it. Narvaeria is too stubborn to agree to disagree. Thus, they argue. . . a lot. To make matters worse, they're totally attracted to each other. XD If they can't keep those feelings under control while they complete their assignment(they won't), they're both going to be in BIG trouble with their employers.

Where it's heading: They're going to totally mess up their assignment and be forced to live in hiding so they don't get murdered.

Sylus and Venea
Sylus is Meliora's god of fire. Venea is Meliora's goddess of air. Naturally, they'd have to have some sort of relationship. They've only just met, but there's trouble brewing. Sylus is an arrogant, promiscuous beast of a man, and he has no intention of giving up until he has Venea. Since she's a morally just woman with no intention of having her honorable reputation ruined, he's going to have a hard time. Although it seems on the surface that they would hate each other, they're actually very alike. This relationship promises to be an entertaining one.

Rhi-Rhi - June 26, 2008 07:35 PM (GMT)
=O I'm in them all the time in my games. I feel very spoiled because I play with so many awesome people that are constantly keeping me on my toes and making me go "OMFG!" all over the place. I love it. They keep me writhing in anticipation over every post, and they're certainly not afraid to push limits and try new things.

For example, many people on RotE will never be able to look at sledgehammers the same way again...xDDD I know I won't after a certain thread and certain events that made many characters (and players) go OMGWTFBBQ!!! Bwahaha. Said thread is quite infamous and was totally unplanned. Let's just say one of my characters is now a cripple in a wheel chair as a result and is a shining example of why mouthing off is never a good idea.

There are lotsa others, too...ones I'm not even directly involved in that I've just read, but they've made my jaw drop nonetheless because they're just so amazingly well written and full of such awesome plot twists and emotion. *__*

Sure! I'd like to know how it works out for you.

Little Mouse - June 26, 2008 08:26 PM (GMT)
Yes, I feel like I get those a lot of the time. I think a big part of the reason I seem to have lots of excitement and drama or whatever going on is because the main board I'm on has dynamic time. We have a system where 1 real month = 3 in-character months. So I don't want to be in say, three threads in one month that are completely boring and nothing happens- there goes a whole quarter of a year for my character! While doing a nice, leisurely thread can be fun every once in a while, especially if there is DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA non-stop, I generally like for things to happen. If it's not engaging, why do it, you know? RPing is supposed to be fun, not boring. If I want to be bored I'll watch QVC.

omwos - June 26, 2008 08:53 PM (GMT)
I haven't had one of those in a couple of years. The last one was in a Farscape RPG where another player played a Peacekeeper and I played a Scarran hybrid and the two were nearly at each other throats after being tossed together on a planetside plot. They never really liked each other but as the game wore on, they started to respect each other while simultaneously pissing one another off. There was a little sexual tension between the two and by little I mean you couldn't cut it a ginsu knife XD But it was great, I actually checked the thread at work to see if the other player had posted. Sadly, the player abruptly left the game and eventually so did I since there was no way to retro my pup out of a storyline the player and I had going.

HellsingerAngel - June 27, 2008 04:23 PM (GMT)
Those moments are what writers roleplayers live for. The thrill of not knowing what might come up next and exploring new avenues of the character you created. Seeing your creation get its own legs and do something you never thought possible. Maybe even pulling yourself into the character so much you acctually start to explore parts of their minds you never knew existed until now? Ok, so maybe the third example is a little creepy, but everyone loves it when characters and plots flesh out like that.

I can still remember a certain instance on a particular board where I decided to play the villain after a long streak of golden hearted good guy characters. The sheer contrast of playstyle shocked most, but it was the way I presented it that made people look at the threads in awe. My villain was considered to be pure evil to everyone and to this day is still considered the best villain they ever had. I even gave someone nightmares and another was almost physically ill with how in-depth I went into his twisted psyche.

The problem is that these moments seem to be so far and few between because it takes months, maybe even years, to get something truly golden going. However, we bless them as defining moments in our experience with writing and I think that's what makes them special. For those that experience this all the time, I feel sad, because it must not have the same impact for them. I find the unknown of character you thought you knew completely to give that tingle instead of simply having a good writer run into you, though that obviously does help bring out those moments a lot sooner.

neon lights - June 27, 2008 06:14 PM (GMT)
Well I'm two amazing threads at the moment but they're amazing in their own way.

I'm in one with my co-owner and friend, and it's in no way thrilling or exciting but she's a great roleplayer and it's nice to chill out and know she won't nag me to get a reply up if I have to take an hour out to think of one.

The other is just started and it is pretty exciting. My character owes another character money for drugs and the other character is now impatient and turns up at my charrie's apartment with an employee. And he's not a nice guy. Enough said. xD

So I think there can be great threads in different ways.
I mean I'm certainly enjoying those threads. =3

Stevie Sedai - July 3, 2008 12:50 AM (GMT)
I've only had one thread like this in my short RPing career but it was amazing! It was on the first site that I was seriously involved in, and there was a huge meeting between most of the Aes Sedai (BTW it's a Wheel of Time site) and my Character is the Keeper of the Chronicles and my friend Jaircia's character was a Red Sister and there personalities where so alike that they started arguing right in the middle of this very important meeting and they eventually started phyisically fighting...I loved it but unfortunetly my dear friend Jair has left the site for an undisclosed amount of time....*sniffs*

Huzzah for my first post on RP Directory!

SJWinchester - July 3, 2008 02:49 AM (GMT)
^ congrats on making your first post!

I have to say, I've been in some threads that while characterized well, I've been bored stiff. Like, really. I've put off replying for as long as possible, just because REPLYING bored me.

Now, however, I have found a particular person that I can actually take my RPing out of the thread, and onto like, msn, and chatboxes and stuff, and still be THRILLED. We randomly start stuff up in msn like:

Ry: Hello!
D: Hey...

It's often so random, but its amazing. I play Dean Winchester. He is the first character I've EVER played, and yet when I use him on other boards, or with other people, I am like, blah.

I can't focus. I feel bad because I stick to this girl so much, because of her writing and the way that I SQUEAL when I read her responses, and can't wait to reply, because I'm you know... meant to have a brother, and a job, and stuff... I can't help the fact that the tension in our threads is outta this world. :p

Yeah, so... she's an old flame. :p I love love her. My character had a lot. And they were all nice in their own way, but MAN... *glomps Ryder* She's amazing.

My mother read one of our threads.. the one that made me the most hyperactive... she blatantly told me to let them get it on already, because the tension was frustrating. :p he he he. YAY. We have our reasons..

But yah. My god. I love her. lol.

Great threads are wow.

AshBeanNun - July 6, 2008 04:30 PM (GMT)
I've got a great thread going right now! It doesn't chill my bones so much as it makes me squee like crazy, and read and re-read over the posts obsessively. For over a year, through two sites, another RPer and I have been developing this bantering love/hate/'I care about you more than anyone but I'm never going to admit it' relationship between two of our charries. My character supposedly died in a war in Ireland, but she never did and now the two of them are finally reunited. They've gone through this role reversal where Ivy is the one with issues and Bram is the one who can help or hurt her. They're at her brother's wedding and she's making her confession. It's so cute! *squees!*

It's just really satisfying to reach this point after so long. The thread isn't grand or epic or anything (it's actually sort of discomforting to read through because of the drastic change in Ivy), but it's effective because of how much emotional investment has built up between the two of them.

This thread hasn''t started yet, but I expect it to be one of the best threads I've ever participated in; the night when the Daily Prophet reporters and concerned citizens break into the dept. of mysteries and discover the fourth unforgivable, also the same night that petty criminal Wendell Darrow gets broken out prison by his true auror love and a gay man with a crush on him, also the night that Ivy and her abusive wretch of a husband Junior Undersecretary Ed Garrow run into each other for the first time after she splinched his leg off and realize they're working in the same building, because he's running away after casting the fourth unforgivable on one of the concerned citizens and she's running down to catch Darrow and Sofia Robards and throw them both in jail. It's a tad more involved than that, but you get the idea. It's going to be hilarious.

Sir - July 6, 2008 11:18 PM (GMT)

It's so inspiring to read about other people being excited about their threads! (:

I don't think I've had a boneghilling good thread in a while. I think the last one that I remember clearly being bonechillin, was a continuation of an old topic (like, 2 months later). The other character comes into tell my character that her husband is dead. Really full of emotion, and the other character was brilliant, each reply managed to surprise me in some way.

TheDarkerDream - July 7, 2008 06:19 PM (GMT)
Oh, I've been in some of those before... I'm in one of those now, so I'll talk about the current one. It's so good I don't even know where to start. Every time he posts I just start shaking and I get so excited without even having read the post because I know it'll be amazing. I don't need to read it to know it'll just be great and I'll have such a good time replying I won't talk on messengers or do anything until I'm done. Not only is he amazing, as a role player and an all around person, but I've absolutely fallen in love with his character. The character is so crazy and sadistic that even though I've been RPing with him since February, I never know what he's going to do.

Ever since I joined Imythess I've been RPing with this guy. Our characters absolutely hate each other, like as in trying to hurt, break down, control, dominate, prove who's stronger and more powerful, and/or kill each other as much as possible hate. It proves for some good stuff. Even if there isn't a physical fight, there are always insults and snarky remarks that at least get some verbal arguments going. As much as they hate each other, though, at the same time they get along so well and have the same personality traits that it's amazing. There's this sort of chemistry between them that I always look forward to threading these two characters because they take things into their own hands and... really it's just amazing, I don't know how else I can put it. I'm rambling now, lol. xD

But recently, like a few days ago (so it's still going, don't know when it will end), we started this topic for them. His sort of adopted daughter figure was kidnapped by these two men, and even though Cordie hates him with every fiber of her being (or at least thinks she does), she actually came to his aid in this really big fight to help him save her. This time, things got switched up a bit and my character was the one who came out without much damage and his was the one coughing up blood and totally beaten up instead of it being the other way around like it usually is. There's some great violence and fighting going on, but aside from that there's sweet, tender, and fluffy moments too. I can't really say too much because the thread isn't even over yet, but I can say that it's the sort of thread that has a little bit of everything in it and I think that's why it's so great. The characters also don't seem to hate each other as much as it seems though, because he kissed her and she threatened him that if he died while she was gone she would come after him and kill him again for doing that to her. <3

That's where it ended so far, but he said we'd go on a posting spree today. :p I've RPed out a lot of relationships in the past, all of which I've loved because the characters made sense together, but I can honestly say I've never RPed anything this intense and it's really just great.

... this post wound up being longer than what I intended it to be... sorry. ._.
