Title: Respect The Setting Or Why Bother?

The Dabnor - June 19, 2008 11:31 AM (GMT)
Hrm. Straightforward rant about something that's bugged the hell out of me a few times, although I think overall, it's kind of rare. Have you ever seen RP's that claim to be set in a fandom and just seem to bear no characteristics of that setting?

Okay, I'm avoiding naming to try to avoid stepping on anyone's toes, but I'll try to explain by referring to a case I once saw.

In this setting, Earth has been pretty much dominated by alien invaders. These aliens have set up what seems to be a pretty totalitarian regime, quite brutal. They're draining Earth's water and probably other resources. Most humans have dull lives and wear dull clothes, with a blue boilersuit type thing being the norm. In addition to this, the aliens have set up a suppression field which has meant that for about the last twenty years or so, humans have been unable to reproduce. All's not lost though. There's a resistance movement fighting back against the oppressors.

Now, for me, this sounds like a setting with rich RP opportunity. Resistance fighters hiding out in basements while jackbooted feet stomp on floorboards overhead, or arguing about whether that man they left behind is worth the risk of going back for. Lots of drama, lots of action.

So why the heck did I see an RP set in the fandom where all the players had teenaged characters? (People who couldn't possibly freaking exist?) One of whom was described as wearing preppy clothes. (How you prep up a blue jumpsuit, I have NO idea) Although, to be fair, the writing there was pretty terrible, so even if they had respected the setting, I wouldn't have joined, so I guess it's kind of a moot point. Still, feels good to get it ranted out.

Oh, and to top it all off, the cake is a lie

Maybe next time, I should add something about people in a normal Star Wars RP having Japanese school uniforms.

The sense, she is non-existent.

...You're on the internet. What did you expect?

The Dabnor - June 19, 2008 11:37 AM (GMT)
ummm, everyone to make sense, no nudity, money from Nigerian Royalty and genuine offers for free iPods? ^_^

Making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.

Aside from that, this is why for the most part I avoid fandom RPs. Everyone has their own view of whatever source material they're using, and I find that when other players don't share my view my enjoyment basically just vanishes. Best bet is to find a new board.

So wait, is this supposed to be a Half Life RP?

I would join this.

Half Life, yup

Sadly, the site is long, long gone. I think. It got brought back from closure many, many times.

So wait, they seriously had a board with force-sensitive Japanese schoolgirls?

The Dabnor - June 19, 2008 09:33 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure they actually were schoolgirls, they just had the uniforms.

I can't remember if they were force sensitive, either. I think although I'm not sure (I was there a long time ago) that one may have been a mechanic/engineer type person.

She will kill you with heart based attacks.

I know not a lot of Sailor Moon, or really of Star Wars but I know enough to know that this thread turned into a gigglefest for me.

Aaaand here comes mean moddy person to say stop it ^_^ You guys are getting a little un-ranty, here. Which means off-topic. Which means bad. Yup. So please either continue with the ranting about people who suck or let this thread pass away and give it a nice burial.

Although I can't see myself ever joining a Half-Life fandom board knowingly, it did sound pretty cool and I feel your frustration (unless you don't feel any) about people totally ignoring the setting and playing boring high-school drama no matter what board they're on.

The Dabnor - June 20, 2008 10:03 AM (GMT)
Boring high school drama with trying-to-sound-Japanese,-but-totally-failing names, no less
