Title: Comis Sans, Anyone?
Seanu - June 17, 2008 09:13 PM (GMT)
It's such an awful font. D= I've thought so for the past five years, since I started using computers (before then I'd never had one. ><). I don't see the attraction in it, yet people insist on using it. Mainly teachers. Well, mine, anyway. Every practise exam paper I ever had, every worksheet, every single piece of work that wasn't photocopied out of a book was in COMIC SANS. It was so the teachers can be "cool" and had a "cool" font. It bugged me. It still bugs me. Hopefully it won't be the same in college, but you never know. .______.
That was my rant.
I just needed to vent about it.

Don't worry, professors don't use horrible font. Sometimes they handwrite and it's worse. But no horrible font....well from my experiences at least.

I don't mind Comic Sans and worksheets and stuff... It seems most adults that don't know much about computers use it because it's a fun/more "lighthearted" font than Arial or Times New Roman. What bugs me is when they use that one really fat, curly font. Ugh. =_=
But seeing Comic Sans on RPGs and websites bugs me. There are better fonts out there, computer savvy people.

I hate when people use Times New Roman too. My dad used it on something he did, and it looks as though he hasn't even tried to do it well. The default Microsoft Word font?! Just no.. I like Arial. It's all neat and stuff. And it's how I like it.
I also don't like how forums have started to use Georgia on everything now. D= Like, even skins. When people use [size=0] how am I supposed to read it?!
bumble_ - June 17, 2008 09:56 PM (GMT)
I used to use Comic Sans ALL. THE. TIME. I really mean that. I used it every single time I could, whether is was in an rpg, a school paper, something I was typing up in general. I was in love.
Then I realized I liked other fonts better. Nowadays, while I don't really like comic Sans, I can understand the draw.
I also understand the appeal of Georgia.... but Arial, I agree, is a super bueno font.
The font that I absolutely cannot stand whatsoever is courier. I die a little everytime I see it... I died a lot using it right then.
antisocialist87 - June 17, 2008 10:57 PM (GMT)
My fave font at the moment is Palatino Linotype. Use it on MSN and my papers.
Seanu - June 17, 2008 11:45 PM (GMT)
On MSN, I use Tahoma. My friend uses comic sans. -dies- He's not a roleplayer though. He's a kid from school. They're all like that around here.. -hides-

LOL, it's funny, I'm doing a research project for the school board I work for and one of the policies was written in Comic Sans. It looked so unprofessional.
As far as fonts go, I HATE Georgia because all the RPGs seem to think it's a brilliant idea to make it as tiny as possible so all the letters blend together into gibberish.

In Canada (or at least Ontario) if you don't use Times New Roman when you write a paper for university/college and even most high schools, you fail. It's implemented to stop people from using annoying curly fonts, illegible fonts and Comic Sans. LOL It's Times New Roman or NOTHING. My Forensics class would have failed me if I'd written it in comic sans. Epic failure.
It also helps with word count. They can safely assume that if your margins are an inch either side and your font is Times New Roman that each double-spaced page is approximately 250 words. They don't have to bleeding count.

HEAVEN FORBID I SHOULD TRY TO LOOK PROFESSIONAL AND NOT LIKE A FANCIFUL TEENAGE TWIT
In all truth, when you use anything but times new roman, it's assumed that you're writing something to make it look pretty, not writing something to convey a meaningful point.
This message written in Comic Sans for your entertainment and joy.

Trufax: I have a font called '
I Hate Comic Sans.'

What up Ontario buddy?! Ironically enough, I just finished writing 2 essays in Times xD
But yeah, comic sans =/ GRRRR. Annoyance.
I like Verdana, size 8, personally ^^
Dx And I'm one of those people that likes Georgia...but I prefer it bigger rather than smaller, if that helps!

It does. You're forgiven lol.
Hurrah for another person who shares the province (and horrible Times-enforced essays) with me! I actually don't mind Times though... Just looks professional to me.

That's so weird that you would use Times New Roman, since Courier fonts are the ones that have letters that are all equal in width. Haha, the things you learn in your basic computer courses. :p
And, btw, Arakis, your font is still the default Tahoma. At least for me. Fail. :X Actually, in the preview/editing post version, it's showing up as Times..

Oh goodie!
xD Yeah. I tend to type up all my essays in Veradana, size 8, and then just switch it over once it's done. Mwuaha, beat the system!

I don't know, to be honest. Probably because Times looks more professional. Courier, when seen at a glance, looks like meaningless code rather than presentable text...
Cal - June 18, 2008 02:55 AM (GMT)
That's connotative, Silvae -- Times is not just a clever name, it's a standard newsprint typesetting. And courier, as a monospaced font, is what was originally used on terminals because the displays couldn't handle different sizes.

Yeah, Times is easier to look at; I agree. All my teachers ask for Times as well, though I'm not at the point where they really count words... Next year. D:
antisocialist87 - June 18, 2008 04:41 AM (GMT)
The professors at my uni simply ask that you use a legible serif font. Which is why I use either Palatino Linotype or Book Antiqua (which is pretty much the same thing).
its aims. - June 18, 2008 04:58 AM (GMT)
comic sans reminds me of a five year old's handwriting. and times new roman...ughhh don't get me started. for school we have to use that font or we get points off, and i hate it so much that i type the whole paper in a font i like and then right before i print it i change it back and try to look at it as little as possible from then on.
PhoenixLily - June 18, 2008 05:06 AM (GMT)
I also belong to the hating of the Comic Sans font.
As far as the Times vs. Courier at my college, I have a professor who will accept either font, however she's stupid enough to not realize that Courier will almost double anything you type. All of a sudden, five page requirements turn into three and a half page Times switched to Courier new.
Now that kids, is beating the system... :D
LittleRikku - June 18, 2008 06:07 AM (GMT)
I dont mind Comic Sans, but i just dont use it. I used to love it though, because it looked much nicer than the very straight and narrow Arial on my old Windows. Buuuuuuuut, i like Arial nicer now.
Verdana and Tahoma are my favorites...but in my school district, Times New Roman is a must have, and i HATE it...o-o
so i kinda type it in Tahoma first and fix it up in Times once im done. [i know someone else does that on this forum...-had read it somewhere-]

If I had page requirements, I'd soooo be using fonts to my advantage. However, we have word count requirements. *headdesk*
I don't like Comic Sans. I'm with that crowd... I used to like it, but I think that over-use and abuse has turned me off it. Simiarly, I don't like Bradley Hand, or Kristen ITC... they just don't... urgh.
I like clean fonts. Which isn't to say I don't like serif! I love serif!
I went through a Georgia phase, before realising that it's just not legible. Not when you have chunks of text. These days I'm in love with Book Antiqua, which gives the same effect, but is a lot easier to read when blocked... I find it easier than sans serif fonts.
I also love Calibri. For those of you with Office/Word 07... you'll understand. I don't know why, it's just.... nice.
But I hate Arial! Particularly Arial Narrow.. it's my university's 'font' and it drives me batty.
ExpectoPatronum - June 18, 2008 08:56 AM (GMT)
I love Verdana in small fonts. ._.;
Comic Sans = FAIL.
mistresswench - June 18, 2008 11:21 AM (GMT)
I remember when I had my first computer I used anything but the defaults. Comic Sans was the font to be using and Kristen ITC. Anything that wasn't Times or Courier. Teachers used it, students used it. It was a good time to be alive.
I think by the time I hit high school it was no longer cool. Instead Comic Sans was 'the assignment font' because all the teachers use it. Perhaps they're trying to be cool, or perhaps they just have no sense of aesthetics. Whatever, we fashionable ones kept away like the plague. I do believe that Georgia (especially itty bitty and slightly overlappy) was the way to go particularly on trendy websites.
I still have a soft spot for Georgia and I do like the clean, simple lines of Arial, but I'm a Times girl these days, and Book Antiqua. Love, love, love Book Antiqua. I also rather like Tahoma to shakes things up a bit.
My teachers aren't usually very fussy about what font we use. The guidelines do suggest Times double spaced blah blah blah but I've never been docked points for using Arial or something like that.
And I'm fond of those funky Pea fonts for graphics. Scriptina needs to go and DIAF. It's overused and not at all nice to look at. It's actually rather distressing seeing it on legitimate advertisements. Automatically makes me think of bad blends and icons.
I don't like the default Calibri on Office 07. I changed it as soon as I could :p

HURRAY, ONTARIANS UNITE! >O
Seriously though, I remember in grade 4 when everyone wrote their half-page projects in squishy fluffy fonts and comic sans. Gross. Now we are required to use tnr in essays and paragraphs we hand in. :3 Yay!
I don't know if it's just me, but I'm quite font of tnr. I like serif fonts and sans serif equally I guess. Sans serif looks more modern and clean, but serif looks clean, but with a bit of a flourish. o:
I remember I used to use Sylfaen for a while in middle school. It was pretty. :D

I LOVE Calibri. It just looks amazing with that ClearType setting, haha. :] I have Word '07 on my laptop; I wish it was available for free download so I could use it on my desktop, which has Photoshop. :[
I love Arial, but I hate Arial Narrow. And Arial Black. Eugh.
antisocialist87 - June 18, 2008 09:52 PM (GMT)
Calibri is a nice font. That's a sans serif font that I would use quite a bit.
My university does not allow us to use Courier, and that's exactly why. They know that use of Courier, as well as fudging with the margins, will make you type less.
Vanity - June 25, 2008 12:58 AM (GMT)
Words from someone who just finished studying typography:
You're asked to use a serif font (like times) for handing in work because serifs create a "line" that your eye can travel along. Open any book nearby and it's most likely written using serifs.
On computer, you should use a sans serif font, because serifs clutter up the screen and make your writing harder to read.
This is why Gill Sans is my favourite typeface. The differing widths of the letterforms create the same illusion you get with a serif font on paper, without actually having serifs. Observe:
The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy Dog
Our universities will let us use any font we like, unless the tutor or lecturer asks for something specific.

I'm not in Ontario but that is the same thing for me here in Nevada too. So far every single paper I have had to turn in had to be Times New Roman, double spaced, size 12 (like once it was 10-12), 1" all around, etc. All that stuff and then MLA format on top of that. Depending on how picky a professor is depends on how big of a punishment you get if you don't do all that. It can be anything from them giving it back to you and saying re-submit it in the "correct" format, docking you points from a little to a lot, or just giving you an F completely because you didn't follow directions.
Now really personally I don't mind Times New Roman, I tend to just let my computer use it because it is still my default. Most of the time when I copy something from the internet (like a post) it keeps the formatting from the internet which I can't read in word for the most part so I just click the "Clear Formatting" thing and it all goes to Times.
Now when I want to change things around I like to use Book Antiqua (I used to use that for papers until university) or Sylfaen. Sylfaen was used on an old old RP site I was on and I really liked it so I still use it sometimes.
