I used Roswenth's code and it was really great, but the problem is that it protrudes from the side of the page and some people have to scroll across the page to get past it. How do I get he bar to stick to the side of the page?

Try to move the sidebar around in the coding. You can put it under different headings, and that also changes the position of the sidebar itself. I dunno if that might help, but it might. So try to put it under <% BOARD HEADER %> and <% NAVIGATION %> and see if that gives the desired effect.
