Title: What Do You Play?
Bandit_Behind_Bars - June 14, 2008 02:31 AM (GMT)
So I am just curious what people do. I am a female and almost every character I have ever made and used has been male. People often ask me why this is and it is really hard for me to explain it to them, but I guess the best answer I have come up with is I see my characters and RP'ing as an escape of sorts so I want to play characters as far from myself as possible.
But in all honesty I can just play a guy better than a girl. My muse hates female characters and I have only had one successful female character that I can think of.
Like I said I'm just curious on what people out there do, since I've apparently surprised people by the fact I pretty much only play male characters.
Ar'kazail - June 14, 2008 02:44 AM (GMT)
As a male I pretty much only use male characters. I've used one female character and she happened to be a goth vampiress (ie:HOT!) who was the bride (in a sense) pf my main character who is a demon.
So.....yeah
Elenlond - June 14, 2008 02:50 AM (GMT)
I'm female and I use both male and female characters. I use them equally (for the most part), though I tend to go through spurts where I might use one gender more than another. I don't think you need to be the same gender as the character you're writing for. Girls can play very convincing males, and the reverse is true.
RomanHk - June 14, 2008 04:21 AM (GMT)
I have seven guys and one girl. :p
cora.faith - June 14, 2008 04:30 AM (GMT)
I'm a female and I only play females. I know some people see this as closed minded, but that's not the point of all. First of all, I don't seek romance rps, so it's not like I'm throwing myself at male characters, and also - I'm just not interestd in playing boys. I'm not really interested in portarying male characters and that's really the point. Roleplaying is about enjoying yourself, ultimately, and it's not that I wouldn't possibly enjoy playing a male - I just don't really feel an impulse to do so.
Atricea - June 14, 2008 07:32 PM (GMT)
I'm a female and I mostly play male characters. They're just so much more fun. I have a few females, but the males are definetly my favorites :)
Stygium - June 14, 2008 07:59 PM (GMT)
I'm a guy, but I play both, just for giggles. Mostly, I DO play dudes, but only because I suck at coming up with female names that don't sound like strippers...
But mostly because I enjoy playing a dude. It helps me feel like *I'm* in the story, ya know?
Emma - June 15, 2008 04:40 AM (GMT)
I voted the very last option, because I feel I do play my characters differently. There is no right or wrong way to play any sex or gender. I might not be able to play a stereotypical guy, but it's ok because my male characters are real people (in a writing sense), not stereotypes. I play them as they are.
I used to play almost only females just because I automatically did. Now I play more males - currently I play two females and three males and NPC one male (Voldemort). I still tend to lean towards females because it's easier to find PBs I like for females. Yes, that is the only reason. Playing a female isn't any easier or any harder than playing a male and the choice of which to play usually just happens without me consciously making it.
SpazzyMal - June 18, 2008 06:39 AM (GMT)
I'm a lady and I play other ladies. Or, that's all I've played so far. I'm not against playing males, I've just never had reason enough to play one. And I'm picky. So, yeah... I'll say "I've only ever played females before, but if I had a character that got me excited, I'd play a guy.", I guess.
Mousie - June 18, 2008 09:30 AM (GMT)
I play male and female pretty equally. I used to lean towards the girls, but as I developed the girls.. a few interesting male characters cropped up... so now it's pretty balanced.
Minnie - June 18, 2008 10:48 AM (GMT)
I'm a girl and when I first started role-playing I think the first charrie was a girl and the second, Ollie, was a boy and the funny thing was even though I didn't initially set out to have him as my main character he eventually become that. You usually get more interaction with a guy too. Now I think for every girl I RP I have four guys so the tables have turned. I guess it does suck a bit when people would prefer a certain guy rather than a girl but that's the luck of the draw, isn't it? Right now I'd rather stick with the boys but I do miss a slightly temperamental or spazzy character I have.
*feels a bit silly doing this* :o

I completely agree with Emma.
My characters present themselves, and there has never been any real significance placed on what gender they turn out to be. A personality emerges, a series of quirks, a job, an expression, a face, and I run with it. Being male or female is usually inconsequential, just an added facet of their personality.
Queen of the Spider-Bats - June 18, 2008 03:06 PM (GMT)
I'm female and I have to admit that I lean more towards female characters because the personalities I pick for them just don't seem to mesh well with the males I have floating around in my head >.<;
But I do enjoy playing male characters, the best three I ever had were triplet brothers I play on Harry Potter sites. Three different types of guys on the same account was just FUN! :D
I try to be more balanced now with my choices (I did used to RP only females) like If I have three characters I do try and find a way to make one of them a male so that the board itself is evened out in the long run and I'm not hogging up all the female spotlight. ^^
Fire Apprentice Volus - June 18, 2008 05:39 PM (GMT)
I mainly use males because I'm a male but I do sometimes use females too. Very rarely though.
murder_101 - June 18, 2008 05:48 PM (GMT)
I mainly use females. It has to be very important to a certain storyline for me to create a male character. I don't know why, I just find it very difficult to get into character when I'm playing a guy. It's really weird. I feel more comfortable playing what I am

I have to agree with this. Mostly I play females because I can understand the motivation behind the character better. Playing males is harder for me, and I usually end up with the same person no matter how I try to change him, which is extremely annoying.
So yes, mostly females with a few males in between for the lols.
The Dabnor - June 19, 2008 08:56 AM (GMT)
I'm male and I play mostly female. I don't think there's a real reason for it; at least nothing more than the fact that there just seem too be more female characters I like and want to play
beta pleated sheet - June 25, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
Many of my characters are female, but it's not because I'm particularly anchored in the female gender. For that matter, my characters aren't particularly anchored in their own gender either. It's more like "Well, I'll give this character breasts and girl parts. Bully for her."
December, Esq - June 25, 2008 09:05 PM (GMT)
I use male characters 99% of the time. I feel that saying that I use male characters always would be most appropriate because it is only once in a blue moon that I make a female charrie, but because there is still that 1%, to put "always" would be incorrect.
October - June 26, 2008 03:33 AM (GMT)
I play both, sometimes I lean more towards one gender, but they are all so different. I have fourteen characters out there and some are more active than others.
Jae - June 26, 2008 12:35 PM (GMT)
I'm female and I play male characters nearly 100% of the time. I can't say that I've never played female characters or that I never will again, but the chances are small. xD
.Ra - June 26, 2008 02:03 PM (GMT)
I play more males then I do females. I started with a male but I do have female characters.
Srebra - June 26, 2008 02:07 PM (GMT)
My characters always end up turning out to be male, somehow. o_o I never do it deliberately but at the end of the brainstorming I just can't visualise them as anything but male. It's annoying sometimes but considering I mostly play high school/Harry Potter RPs I suppose it's not too bad a thing, haha. :x
MissMudblood - June 26, 2008 08:28 PM (GMT)
I'm a girl, so usually, I play GIRL characters. But, I mean, once in a while, I'll play a guy character. It's just easier for me to play a girl character because I AM one, and all. And when I play guy characters they're all sissy. x . x
Meredith - July 8, 2008 10:37 PM (GMT)
I'm female and I only create female characters. I'm still kinda new to RPing and I haven't gotten the hang of RPing male charries yet. :(
AshBeanNun - July 8, 2008 10:44 PM (GMT)
I'm female and I play m/f pretty equally. However, my longest lasting characters tend to be female, probably because I feel like I can develop them more. (No offense, guys! I just know more about the way a female thinks) On the other hand, some of my best characters have been male. When everything's said and done, I think they're equal.
sonatina - July 8, 2008 11:03 PM (GMT)
I'm female and I started out playing only females, but none of them were ever quite right, y'know? And then I started playing males and it clicked. For about four years I would only play males, no matter what, but recently I've come up with a female character that I really like, so I might branch back out. I don't know, I think male characters just make more sense to me.
WildeThing - July 8, 2008 11:08 PM (GMT)
Exclusively male, but I'm hoping to one day play a female.
Catastrophe86 - July 14, 2008 10:00 AM (GMT)
I chose the last option, because although I do tend to lean towards playing male characters, I wouldn't say that I rarely play females. Usually, I end up with more males than females, but there have been games where my females outnumbered the men, and games where I had an equal amount. It all depends on what I'm in the mood for when I'm making a new character, really. I believe I play both genders equally well, but this is not something I usually ponder. The personality of a character is much more important to me than the gender, and unless you're being very stereotypic in the creation of your characters, every female has masculine traits (or traits that are considered masculine), and every male has feminine traits.
Oh, and I'm female, by the way.
H.I.M - July 14, 2008 09:43 PM (GMT)
Being a male, I tend to just make male characters and put them into priority. I've never really used a female character to it's fullest potential, but you never know, I might in the near future use female and male characters. Why I never choose females is beyong me, I think I've just gotten accustomed to all the male characters I've made in the past, I'm not one for change if you will.
Sicaluff - July 16, 2008 03:16 AM (GMT)
I'm female and I use male characters most of the time and females rarely
That said, I do have my favourite female characters I love to play. But I do love playing guys mostly. :]
.44 Magdalene - August 7, 2008 05:39 AM (GMT)
I'm a male who's afraid of getting cooties if he plays a female.
666 - August 12, 2008 12:44 AM (GMT)
I've played both male and female characters. I find that I'm sometimes better at playing female roles than I am at playing male roles, despite being a man myself. Strange...
Javen - August 14, 2008 01:21 AM (GMT)
I'm male and I tend to use female characters a bit more than males. It is easiest for me to visualize a female character, but my most often used character profile is two characters, a male alien and a female sub-human. So I really use both equally, but usually my posts are in the female's point of view.
Kali - August 18, 2008 02:57 AM (GMT)
I'm female and I play equally male and female characters. Most boards are always looking for male characters, and I do find it fun, so I like to have about one of each, male and female, on any board, both to help out, and so that I'm not getting bored.
I find it sometimes difficult to play males, but I like the challenge, too.
Aubs - August 18, 2008 03:00 AM (GMT)
I'm a female that only plays male. I don't really know why, but I've always found it easier. xD
Metallicar - August 21, 2008 07:16 AM (GMT)
I usually end up having 3 females and 2 males or 2 males, 2 females or 3 males and 3 females.
On most boards though I have more fun (and sadly more threads) with my male characters.
nervous. - September 7, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
I haven't had a female character since my marysue days... Oh, come on, everyone has them.
I greatly prefer male characters to the point where I find it downright impossible to make a female character that isn't in some way shape or form, male.
