Title: How Many Threads Do You Like To Have At A Time?
Tammi - June 11, 2008 09:21 PM (GMT)
How many threads do you like to have at once? When roleplaying, what's your preferable number of threads total? Per character? Does it depend on the character? (This is for one forum.)
I like to have around 10 threads at a time between my two characters. Sometimes I have more for one or the other, depending on how fast certain threads are. Other times it depends on the plots I'm in.
I usually like to have a few fast threads and a few slower ones so I'm not totally swamped. Most of the time, my slow ones are official business (bahaha, funny how that works out~ :P )
The most threads I had at once was 21, split between two characters~ :3 I was on a roll and replied to them like mad.
What about you?

Personally I'm not a fan of multi-thread posting; I like the idea of a linear, one character in one place at one time kind of boards. That way no one gets confused on the time or location, and you can follow their lives from start to finish, like a story.
I like having two or three characters, with one thread at a time for each of them. (unless, of course, they find their way into the same thread!)

Depends on how many characters I have, and how many forums I'm on. Per forum, I tend to try to have three to four threads per character, unless there are certain rules on the forum (such as minimum word counts), where I'll aim to have fewer because it takes me an hour or two to type longer posts. I'm also easily distracted and post while being on MSN and doing a whole ton of other things.
Overall I like to have a lot of threads at once, across mutiple sites, so that, in the event that I have a lot of spare time on my hands, I have something to do everyday. The only thing that sucks about it is that, once I'm burnt out or I need a break from the constant writing, they all end up stagnant. People conveniently post at the same time, on the same day, when I either don't have time to reply, I can't reply, or I'm too worn out to do so. XD
SpazzyMal - June 11, 2008 10:36 PM (GMT)
Generally, I'm in 3-5 threads at a time. If I go above 5 my mind goes bezerk and I have trouble keeping up with the things I've gotten myself into.
It also depends on if I've got my maximum amount of characters, or just one o two. If I've got 3 or more I'll probably only be in one thread per character at a time, maybe two for one of them if I need to be.
And if I'm in several slowish threads I may add another thread, if I think I can handle it, and such. But I try to police myself, because I've gotten myself into binds by doing things like that. Unfortunately, if I let myself get too hyper about joining threads, then get into too many, I tend to... get overwhelmed and then I dread posting, because I fear I'll never catch up.
I'm lame. XD

Ahahaha...ahaha...ahem.
I have like...|: 35 threads or something that I'm in. It's about one per character, but a few characters are in multiple threads. I tend to like a linear way of doing things because my brain gets all confuzzled otherwise and because all the threads connect together and if I don't know what's gonna happen in one thread...it'd be hella difficult to play my character in another thread that takes place after that unfinished thread. But if I have a good sense of the timeline, then I'll do it. :3
The only reason I can keep track of all my threads is because of phpbb3's handy dandy bookmark feature. That thing is a GODSEND. Also, the only way I'm able to juggle all those threads is that I play with a bunch of different people who post at different speeds. One person may post 30 minutes after I reply, another may post a couple times a week. So it helps me balance stuff.
That said, I'm limiting myself and not joining other threads until a few finish, because I reached my limit. xDD *flails*
Manda - June 11, 2008 11:46 PM (GMT)
Typically, I have a handful of threads (usually 3 - 7) per character, and I have 5 characters. I don't find it too hard to keep up with all of them; but on the other hand, I don't get much time to read threads that I'm not in.
The hardest part for me is that no one knows I play all those characters. I have a pseudo identity behind each character. So not being able to switch back and forth between characters rapidly is really my biggest problem.
AshBeanNun - June 12, 2008 12:04 AM (GMT)
^If I had that many active characters Rhi, I would get confused too.
Right now I'm in about...seven, eight threads? Not quite sure. It's about two per character, which is a good number for me. For the most part they're threads that were discussed beforehand, so it doesn't cause any timeline conflicts. I have a habit of working things into plots anyways, so open and unplanned threads don't bother anything. It's nice writing in multiple threads at the same time for a character. I don't get bored by one particular flavor because it's pretty evenly spread out.
elphie49 - June 12, 2008 01:47 AM (GMT)
As many as is humanly possible. I'll whine about it, but I secretly love having a ton to reply to. Of course, there is a time where I go beserk and can't handle them all. That's my limit.

Ditto. I'm currently in, for one character...wow, exactly 10. But then my muse fails me and 10 people are going, "Meredith, posttttttttttt." And I'm freaking out. I like to have lots of different threads, but I just can't handle them.
Emma - June 12, 2008 02:24 AM (GMT)
Currently on my site I'm in three. One character's in one thread, one's in two and my third is not in a thread. I'm waiting to IM him with Panda. We tend to alternate between threading and IMing with Ruaidhri and Detta and I like that.
Usually I stick to one per character if I have more than one character, although as admin I sometimes get into more when we have a new player to make sure they're getting some action. If I need to RP and there're no threads available I can RP in our testing area, because new applicants need someone to reply and I can go crazy and do whatever in them.
I used to join heaps and heaps but my posting has slowed down so much and I am leaning towards setting up long-term plots, so it's easier to work on a few important threads than many threads that have no point at all.
krista euphoria - June 12, 2008 02:55 AM (GMT)
I try not to hit about fifteen, because then I can't keep up with it and lose muse. My more important threads are the slower threads, too...go figure. Haha
Zippy - June 12, 2008 12:50 PM (GMT)
Like SpazzyMal, I can deal with about three to five threads at a time. Any more than that and I lose focus. I tend to write fairly long replies and it just gets to be too much if I'm in more than a few threads at a time.
By the way, Tammi, I've been meaning to tell you just forever, but I LOVE your avatar. I'm sure that's from the movie, but did you also read the manga series? I haven't seen the movie but I read the books and loved Death Note so much. A really well-done series. L is cool, but Light rules!
Nowhere - June 12, 2008 01:34 PM (GMT)
I limit myself to about three. I find that the more I have to reply to, the less quality my posts become. So I like to keep my focus on a few at a time. Just so I can relax and not get frazzled going back and forth trying to make sure I get a reply in to a dozen or more threads.
*NR Staff* - June 12, 2008 03:39 PM (GMT)
One thread per character, and several characters... I can't abide playing the same person in different places at the same board...no continuity that way. I am quite a linear person I suppose.
China Doll - June 12, 2008 06:00 PM (GMT)
Oi I have the tendency to want to RP with everyone on my boards, and jump into threads without realizing just how many I have together, and its a bad habit for me >.< But I would prefer to have at least two threads per character, but again that doesn't always pan out for me.. for some reason lol
Sleepless - June 12, 2008 06:11 PM (GMT)
I have the same problem as most and tend to get into as many threads as I possible can at once .__.
I do have about a billion characters at a billion different boards, though, so that's one explanation for it. That isn't exactly good though, since I can't really go very as deeply into each character and their relationships as I would if I only had a few :( What can I say? I'm character mad. And thread mad. And altogether mad.
Panda - June 12, 2008 07:14 PM (GMT)
Emma: You're waiting on meee? Ooeer, hit me up on PM and we'll make a play-date.
The most threads I've been in lately was 14 and I was posting something every day in order to keep up. These are not 14 threads that I reply to once every never. I had 6 characters at the time. Now I have 8 and I'm in....7. That's an easy number to deal with. It means I have more time to plan my one-shots or do another therapy session for Lenore, or fool around in photoshop. When I have over 10 I find I have no time for anything else and I hate it.
However, I also hate saying no, so when I get ideas for threads, I try and write them down so that I don't forget.
Kain - June 12, 2008 07:33 PM (GMT)
I love to have at least two threads because it's easier to keep track and not disappoint people. However, I'm usually too nice and people tend to request RPing with me... which makes me have at least 5-6... very stressful.. -__-
Atricea - June 12, 2008 08:57 PM (GMT)
my characters on my board right now are in total active in about 6 threads right now. And that's not an awful lot. I have 5 active characters and then some NPC, and if all characters are in active threads that means I've got at least 5 threads... and then some are often active in more than one thread at the time... so yeah, I'm always busy, it's nice :)
Chexdex - June 15, 2008 02:17 PM (GMT)
It depends. I sometimes have multiple characters. I like to have 2 or even 3 threads for each and it just depends on the number of characters I have.
kel430 - June 15, 2008 03:47 PM (GMT)
I like to have one or two at a time. Anything more and I'll start messing up the different threads.
Plus, I hate the pressure of knowing you have a thousand topics to reply to and that people are counting on you to post.
BOH .:A:. - June 19, 2008 04:16 AM (GMT)
Well, for me, I like to have at least 2 per character if I have more than 2 characters. If I have two characters, I would prefer like two meet and greet/fun threads and one serious thread for each.
Then I usually go mad crazy on threads with my favorite character, that changes every month, and join a lot of threads until the brink of being swamped. I rap them up and then take a break lol. That how it usually works with me.
PhoenixLily - June 19, 2008 04:52 AM (GMT)
I try to keep my characters even. Right now, I hve one group thread on one site that both of my girls are in, and plans for about four or five other threads for one of my characters vs. only three in the wings for my new character but that is because A.) one of the characters is a popular canon anyway, and she has been in play on the board already, so she has history with some people that we want to explore since I'm a new player that has picked her up, and B.) the second player is a not so well known canon, and she hasn't been played on the board at all. However I have put a cap on the amount of threads I will allow that first character in until I get some more for the second character. And I also am not planning for these characters to jum into all ten of these threads at once.
As for my other site, my charries have one thread each right now, though one thread was just finished. I only have two ,on this site, but I am also admin so it's a bit busy as it is. Once the site is running a little more smoothly on it's own though, I am probably going to keep an average of two at the most three threads per charrie, though I may simply have to thread more with one character because she is so center to the plot as headmistress of the school.
So right now...with only four active threads between four characters and getting a site off the ground, I'm in a comfortable position. Comfortable enough to say that I am definitley not bored... :)
The Dabnor - June 19, 2008 08:23 AM (GMT)
I have to admit, I'm fairly variable, depending on what threads I have, how active other people are and stuff, but I think I'm in 6 ish right now, which is probably fairly average for me. Although I think that may be dropping soon, because I believe one of the games I'm at is closing
