Title: Free Forums?!
Gowd - May 30, 2008 06:06 PM (GMT)
Well, i saw a post once [cant remember who wrote it], about dead sites, and how they shouldn't be left, but be given away. And it got me thinking about my graveyard of sites [Im a compulsive maker, i make them, then never use them :S] and was thinking of offering for people to perhaps have them?
Would i be able to do that in the gift area lol?

I don't have the knowledge (authority?) to answer your question, but I'm just curious .. Do you mean like, giving a whole board, plus its plot and everything, to someone else for revival? Just wondering. Personally I can't do that (I hold on to my ideas too closely haha), but it's a good idea if you don't want your idea to go waste, and don't mind seeing it in the hands of others. *shrug*
Me and my friend did that once in 2005, though, and not only did the girl that took over completely destroy it (thus having it die), but when me and my friend decided to open it back up the next year, she decided to plagiarize us. Three. Times. And the third time .. was after she'd admitted to doing it the first two times. We always got her copycat (literally, word-for-word) sites shut down and everything (thank god), but what really annoys me is, at least a few months after the last time she did it, she would open her own sites and put out this HUGE blurb about how everything on the site was hers, people who tried to steal were stupid, etc. etc. God, what an idiot.

Idk, but my point kind of is, I'm paranoid enough to think that giving away you own old board can turn horribly wrong, and I thought I'd just let you be aware, in case you weren't. I try to assume the best from people, but it's events like that that get me thinking differently. x.x

No, not the plot :p Just a ready made board, so to speak, everything coded, set up, just needs a plot and their own little things added XD Basically like a template Haha. I know what you meen though, hence why i tend to not offer plots out pin case i have need for them]. But i usually make sites, then just leave them, and i never both getting members, i just do it for fun  and it would be nice to see them used :innocent: Just a thought i had, just not sure where to place them :p

Haha! Oh okay that's cool. Yeah, it's like a step up from just a free skin. XD That's neat!

We actually have a system in the workings where people can offer up their ready-made plots which they don't use. For now it's limited to plots as said. But if this idea of gowd interests people, it could defiantly be added. I have no clue if there are people who wanted to get a forum like that, or that there are more people who make forums but never use them again.... It would depend completly on the interest of others.

I'd be interested in a forum like that...although more so on the writing side, rather than the role play one. >.> Dunno if people would agree to let others use their ideas for their writing (stories/novels) or just role play or what, but it's something to possibly consider. /random reply

I think that it's a really good idea considering the fact that a lot of people don't have the time or patience to create their own board from scratch. I do the same things with some of my boards. Create them, and then never really use them. :)

I like the plot suggestions idea too - Since i know quite a couple of people who like to write plots, but not make their own board [usually helping me out with plots XD ]
I just thought it would be a nice idea, since i see no point letting nice forums go to waste and such ^_^

I don't like this idea. In my eyes it would promote laziness and incompetency. If you have someone who doesn't have the time to even set up the board, they are certainly not qualified to run one. If they don't have to knowledge of how to set up a board, then providing them with ready-made boards makes them lazy and stupid, really, because they aren't learning anything themselves.
Not that this would be happening every time (and some people might enjoy having a lazy, incompetent admin who has no time for their board), but that was the first thing that popped to mind - a whole horde of knowledgeless, useless admins.

I actually make boards a lot, get to a certain point, go "Screw this" and delete it. :) So I'd be interested in that sort of section.

Emma-
What if the admin isn't good with coding? They can't fix things when the HTML goes: "WTF! N00b! I QUIT!" and goes all wacky (Oh yes...that's happened to me and probably everyone else more than once. BEcause, as we all know, HTML is like a little kid. Very crude and rude.). Then they have a ready made board that requires no coding ability. all they have to do is set up the boards (It's point and click, really. No real knowlege needed.) and write the plot and what not.
Anyways.
I'd like this. Because, as much as I enjoy sitting at my computer and fixing stuff when HTML decides to be childish and mess up, I would still rather have a board ready so that I could work on it immediately, and fix what I didn't like. I would have loved this when I first started making boards, because HTML was hell to self teach. And I only know basic commands to fix stuff when I mess up.

I kind've disagree. When you first started running forums, did they always look amazing and run perfectly? I'm assuming not - there's a learning curve. You figure out that using pretty skins is a good idea, and that headers make everyone happy. But obviously it's not just about that, is it? RP forums are about the actual RP, so why should someone who has good ideas and is a good writer be prevented from running boards by the fact that he/she is not particularly great with HTML/CSS? It's hardly fair. You don't stand against people offering skins, or sidebar codes, or forum graphics, do you? So you can hardly stand against what is just providing a complete package of those three.
ShinLi - June 2, 2008 12:05 PM (GMT)
I actually like the idea, and really, it's the members decision to offer up their unfinished forums to others, and it's the other who decides to take up on the offer and use that forum to start up an RPG. Of course rules would be added that would prevent ripping or not giving credit, but the one who would get the forum should also not be limited to what's there already. If they want to add something, or get another skin, that should be ok.
It would become a sort of market place, where it's supply and demand. Not only for forums, but also for plots. Maybe we could even re-arange the forums to include forums like the Employment center and affiliation board, as they would fit quite well with those forums too. (and really I'm looking for ways to get a more compact layout for RPG-D XDD). They could all fall under a sort of market place theme where people ask for something, or offer something. Me likes, do you guys like that?
TwilightDawn - June 2, 2008 12:18 PM (GMT)
If you want help with planning the compactishness, Ask me, I tend to do that to some of my boards when I'm bored. xD
