Title: Other Forum Hosts.
Description: Moving my board, where else is there?

Spiral - May 24, 2008 02:57 AM (GMT)
Ok. I'm moving my entire board to another host for technical and impression purposes (because a board that opened in February with only nine active members and barely any activity isn't too good.). So other than IF (the current board host), PB, and Forumer, what other good ones are there?

I know it's a bit of a stupid question, but I've looked and I can't take the time to create dozens of test forums to find out the best ones... So if you'd let me know that would be perfect.

Also, I'm looking for a board that allows interchangeable skins. Thanks.

ZB. Personally, I love it. The fact that you can have a subforum of a subforum, of a subforum, of a subforum, of a sub forum, of a base forum, is awesone.

Are you just looking for a free ad-supported host? There is smfforfree.com, and PHPBB used to have a free solution many many moons ago, but that seems to have changed in the many releases since I've used it. There are also domain hosts that will set up other software for you.

Ok, first things first, you should have Searched before starting this topic. There are many, many discussions on forum software, some so detailed you'd have your answer within the first few replies.

That is just some of the ones out there. Go up to Search and search 'forum software' if you want more. That'd be easier on us all than going over the same things we have before. And then if you have questions about previous topics, you can ask here!

I say PHPBB3 because I whore it everywhere. You'd need to find a free host (I know a couple of ok ones) but phpBB3 is very versatile, free and great!

Yeah sorry, I didn't get anything that seemed too helpful (I'm a bit impatient x.x )

This is completely opinion based and it's impossible for anyone to just hand you a forum name and say, 'this is for you!' when we know nothing about the forum you are transferring.

Are you prepared to host your own webspace for free-script boards?
Do you need sub-forums?
What experience do you have with other types of forum?
How internet/html competent are you?
Are you prepared to make your own graphics, or does it have to come with a range of templates?
What kind of ads can you tolerate?
Are you okay with downtime? Or does your impatience flow into this, too?
What are the bare-essential things you would like for your forum to have?

Have you tried other techniques on bumping your activity because honestly, a new forum will not cut it if your member activity is low. You are more likely to lose members than you are gain them.

Very good are also the wbblite. You will find many hacks and addons for it. You need a hoster which supports mysql.
I have the WBB2. If you like to buy a board system liek the WBB2. You get also the new WBB3. I must warn you the WBB3 is muich more difficult to design, and the most boards look liek the same. So it is better to install the WBB2. Tehre you can make much more stuff, liek a very cool shoutbox and some other features.
There is also a shoutbox for the wbblite, I don't know where you can get this one.

Sorry I know only a german free one: www.funpic.de I don't know how good it is. I have a paid webspace.

For me, it was clear, paid webspace, I don't advertisments, special the popups With firefox I can block them easy.

Yeah. I've just decided to stick with IF and try to look around for someone who can help with the coding issues I'm having since I'm completely useless with html and coding (which is why I wanted to move in the first place, looking for something easier to code).
