Description: Which stirs your macaroni?

There are two reasons to play a canon:
- You are unable to create a dynamic and powerful character on your own due to your lack of imagination
- You are unwilling to put forth the effort to think up a dynamic and powerful character.

I don't know if I'd go THAT far. Lack of creativity is lack of creativity, whether you're playing Harry Potter or Beelzebubberkins Mosley, the Original Character new groundskeeper (going with Harry Potter because everyone seems to play on the dam' boards). You can take canon characters or premades in new directions. Of course, it depends on how controlling and idiotic the Admin is. I think any problem with canons lies with unreasoning Admin strictness regarding their execution.
>> ED: Now, me, what I'd really like are some cannon characters. Easy to play. Perfect for the uncreative. Put some gunpowder in and light those bad boys up...

I prefer original characters, that way you can mold them to what you want them to be, not what is already set by the movie/book/game

Well I think the way to spell it would be 'canon' character :p.
Anyways, I mostly play original characters only. I don't mind that I join sites who allow both canon and original characters. I even decided to make a canon list at my newest RP. However this canon list is very free. I don't like those strict canon lists that have everything pre-decided. Just a push in the right direction is fine enough with me. I would never join a canon only site though. It's not my fancy and would restrict my fantasy and creativity too much.

Original mostly, but only because I can't stand people who set their premades' relationships, names, playbys, heck even their favorite socks, in stone. I wouldn't mind playing a canon if there were more freedom.

And SmathNa wins Mousie's award for the biggest LOL today.
Is it wrong that I can see a thread, in which people choose from a variety of poorly made characters and blow them up?
... can I start one here? Please? Oh, I think I will...
Back on topic.
I don't play canons, but not because I hate them. I just feel uncomfortable taking someone else's work. Even if it's simply a premade from the site admin, I prefer to have it all come from me. But then, I'm like that with most things.
In short - I won't play it, but I don't mind being on a board with canon characters.

first to be annoying, I never played a cannon... that would be really weird, I'd not do anything else than fire bombs away...
now, canons on the other hand, I have a few of those :p but I mostly play original characters, that's what I prefer to do. And they can become pretty interesting, especially those whom you can't really control. You play the character, but it's more like you write "for" the character, you let the character play for themselves and some pretty interesting stuff comes up. I could never do that with a canon character, because so many things are pre-set for them... :)

It really depends. If you mean 'canon' as in 'actual characters from series X' then I won't RP as one. It makes me feel weird, for some reason, and I'm always afraid somebody won't like my portrayal of that character.
But if you mean 'premades from the admin of a site' then yes, I'll play those. It's much easier to get interaction if you use a premade, and often I'll just pick one with a personality I haven't explored yet just for fun. But I do have a lot of original characters that I play, I just almost never use them at more than one site... which is unfortunate because 90% of the boards I'm on die D:
I'm quite picky over whether I'll pick a premade character or not though. If they have set first/middle names, shove off. If I get PMed telling me that I'm not playing the character right -- even though all they gave me was status, age, last name and three words on personality -- then I'll probably shove it. I hate those people...
SpazzyMal - May 21, 2008 10:31 PM (GMT)
I've played canons, premades, and originals. I don't really have a preference. If a canon/premade character is interesting to me and catches my eye, I'll play it. If I don't see something that catches my eye, I'll make an original. It's that simple. *shrug*
zeewolf - May 21, 2008 10:55 PM (GMT)
90% of my characters have been originals, but I'm not against playing canons. They're more of a challenge, in my opinion, even though their personality/appearance is already there because I try to play them exactly true to character. They always end up going a different direction for me than I feel was intended, whether it really was or not. o_O

-gasp- You mean you don't like playing large metal contraptions filled with gunpowder?!
-raises hand- My bad everyone. ^_^' Rhoni's got a low intellect, please forgive her.

i always play canon characters, and i don't know why - and it has nothing to do with lack of creativity. i'm a novelist. i would know.

I've gotta say, it warms my heart the way people replied to this thread to let Rhoni know she'd messed up. No flaming for us - just bad jokes xD (Had to avoid a pun there).
I prefer originals. I've taken a few canons on and whenever I do, I do it with an intent to make something more out of the character. When I took Regulus Black, I gave him Associative Personality Disorder (I think that's the right name) and made him bullied by his brother so that he had a reason for being a nutcase. When I took Lucius Malfoy, I fell him in love with a French half-blood and kept him nasty, cold and superior because he'd been raised like that and couldn't stop doing it.
I don't generally have a positive outlook on those who play canons - because they seem so darn intent on playing them exactly how the author made them and so depriving myself and others who play with them of any fun at all, because we know exactly how said canon will react in any situation and what's going to happen in their life. I prefer it when people are willing to take a canon and turn them into something unexpected and fun.
