Title: Skins

Sunday - May 18, 2008 11:52 PM (GMT)
I was just thinking... Maybe RPG-D could put in a rule saying that for skins to be accepted, they must be fully customized or something? I noticed that a lot of skins that have been accepted don't work properly or don't look right because there are still some default settings/colors on parts of the design (especially in the calendar view). I think making sure all the boards were completed properly would really enhance the quality of the collection of skins we have.

Just a suggestion. And no offense intended to those who have skins here. =)

I think someone should write a tutorial on how to skin because it is my belief that people don't skin those parts because they forget about them / don't know how to skin them.

In my opinion (I don't know ShinLi's) our Skindex is here to show off the skins that RPG-Ders are proud of - not to judge, criticise, ask for 'quality' skins, teach or anything of the sort. There are plenty of places out there completely dedicated to skinning and we do not need to be. We don't offer RPing lessons - and we are a board dedicated to RPs. I like that (in my eyes) we are a place to come and share without having to worry about being told we should be better.

That said, I think if people wish to submit documentations to our list about how to skin (provided they write them!) they would be well-received. I just don't think we need to make it a rule that skins have to be fully done, because that might drive away people who just want to shyly share what they can do.

I hope that didn't seem like I was dismissing your idea, Sunday (or yours, Dec). I just don't see them as necessary because we aren't really a skins-focussed board.

Isn't the very fact that RPG-D is providing the service (skins) enough of a justification to make it as much of a quality service as possible? Just my opinion, of course; I just feel it'd be more fair to members to provide them properly coded skins, instead of letting them figure out once the skin is installed that it's not complete.

I think it would be wise to fully check out a skin before installing it on one's board, but I also think it would be nice to have skinning resources available to people. *shrugs*

I think offering incomplete skins is just... I don't know the word. Though it is very annoying finding a skin you want to use, then when you put it on your site, you find out the calendar page doesn't match, or that it doesn't work on Firefox (my personal pet peeve), or the .tablefill code is still on default... whatever it may be. I agree that testing a skin before using it is smart, but then again, if you're offering a service, why would you make your customers finish what you didn't? I don't think my suggestion is really that outrageous or unreasonable; it's just a point of going through a sample board and making sure it all looks okay. I'm definitely not suggesting we pull an IFSZ and allow only experts to submit their skins. Plus, we could still allow people to put in their attempts or unfinished skins, for feedback and such.

I like the idea of having a help forum or at least a topic with resources, especially if the mods/admins are worried enforcing a rule of quality will alienate people from making their own skins. And InvisionFree does have an official CSS skinning guide, with each element of the skin identified. I don't have the URL on my favorites or anything, but it's out there. I'll look for it. :p
