Title: What We Learned Today...
Description: Good that came of the Goons.

I think most of us with domains on invisionfree have had a pretty nasty day, what with waking up to find a nasty nasty hacker page, and then being confronted with the same thing here at the D.
Exactly my favourite way to spend Easter Sunday.
Uh, not...
But there were a few things I noticed that came through out of the whole ordeal that were pretty cool.
-- One was the rescue mission dropping in to other boards, letting people know what was going on. Anyone who started roleplaying and adminning in the dark ages, where even mentioning another board was an offense punishable by death, will understand what I mean when I say it's awesome to see D'ers running about to help each other.
As I said already, props to DisdainfulSoul, who dropped into Tally and helped calm us all down.
-- Two was the member's reaction. We were incredibly active today, despite everything. Members archiving all their own topics.. just in case. Everyone sort of... banded together and helped to secure the board against anything more permanent.
So I think that's all pretty cool, despite the number of attacks I've had in the past eight hours (not only did the hackers page come up, but z3 has been flickering the past couple of hours which really does NOTHING for my peace of mind...)...

I just wish I could have gone to other boards, but aside from RPG-D, Tally was the only IF-with-a-domain-name game I could think of to test my theory that it was the domain thingy, and not the whole system. I stopped by Tribal Unity in the hopes of telling ShinLi what was going on (and I saw she was all OMGWTF? in her shoutbox) but her shoutbox wasn't open to guests. :(
But the sense of community was excellent. :D

Ya I noticed that too. I really think places like RPG-D have given us a sense of community, and not just a bunch of different boards. Like we're all here to help each other out, it's quite awesome.
Btw, who were these 'goons' people that did it?
Disdainful Soul - March 23, 2008 05:56 AM (GMT)
Apparently they're a brand off/subgroup/something connected to SomethingAwful. I don't know exactly, sorry,

Ahhh SA. How special.
Anyways, I think you're right, Mousie. I wasn't here for most of the drama since I was studying, but it didn't seem to be too bad.

No, it wasn't too bad. I know it could have been a hell of a lot worse. It was a bit of a nightmare in the beginning since no one really knew what was going on, but everyone seemed to calm down pretty quickly after people started figuring it out and letting other people know. I know some people were not even aware of it - and may not be for days now. Really, it was just banding together, for the most part, as has already been said. Not just in individual boards, but just everywhere. Almost comforting, in a way, if a bit frustrating.
I think it is safe to say that it is over. But, still, in the words of one of my favorite characters, CONSTANT VIGILANCE (and cookies)!

Yeh I couldn't get the TU shoutbox to work for guests ><, sorry Disdainful Soul, but I really appreciate you tried to contact me. Although I was asleep at that time XD.
Yeh I think it's really good to see people not only think about their own forums, but also try others to let know what was going on and to calm them down. So kudos for everyone who'd done that ^.^.

Yes! I also think it was fantastic how people were all working together to try calm each other down, work out what was happening and warn others. Good work DS.
The members on my site were also working out a way to be saving things on my board, even though it wasn't affected. I got on there and everyone was talking about saving threads and deleting info and things like that.
It's great to know that the RPing community can work together like this, especially if it used to be as Mousie says.

*Feels left out* Hah, I was at a sleepover meanwhile most of this was happening! Anyway, that sounds so cool that everyone was helping each other. When I find out who did that, I would like to throw that fruit that there was a thread on earlier, the one with spikes and stuff, at them! ^_^

I was out all night and thought my co-admin was messing with me when he texted me to tell me that IF got hacked. Coming back online last night, I definitely saw that same thing, which is one of the reasons I love RPG-D.
My site isn't even opened yet and Gowd came and announced what happened in my cbox <3
