Title: Hacked?
TurkFox - March 22, 2008 11:51 PM (GMT)
If you try to get to the site using the domain, you reach a page that says the site has been hacked. I thought I'd try with the IF url and it worked, luckily, but that might explain why there's no one around.
Just thought I'd point it out in case you didn't know. Although, if you're reading this you've probably worked it all out already to get to this point... xD
Lothlómendil - March 22, 2008 11:54 PM (GMT)
It is actually InvisionFree's domain name that has been hacked, not RPG-D itself. You can access RPG-D regularly by using the
http://z15.invisionfree.com/RPG_Directory URL.
Link to IF's "announcement":
http://z1.invisionfree.com/forums/support/...howtopic=452346Server one IF boards seem to be 404'd now, here's the ZB announcement:

Sunday - March 23, 2008 12:05 AM (GMT)
Why is it that the actual IF forum is intact, but the domain name is affected? Weird.
Either way, I am backing up all my stuff just in case. :[
Disdainful Soul - March 23, 2008 12:06 AM (GMT)
I got a 404 on that announcement, Loth.

I edited my post to link to the ZetaBoards version of the announcement, since server one IF boards seem to be getting 404'd now (which is a bad sign).
Disdainful Soul - March 23, 2008 12:15 AM (GMT)
Yeah, not good.
Has anyone told ShinLi and the other mods etc. how to get here?

I've been watching for them on MSN, not so far no one is online. Until then you all have me. XD *pretends to be useful*
Disdainful Soul - March 23, 2008 12:18 AM (GMT)
I saw some chaos in Tribal Unity's shoutbox, but I couldn't let them know how to come back as I'm not a member.
What are some of the boards with large amounts of RPG-D members with cboxes? We can post there etc. I guess.
Sunday - March 23, 2008 12:23 AM (GMT)
Red Carpet & Rebellion, Pandora's Closet, and RPG Collection? They might be good places to have reminders.
Disdainful Soul - March 23, 2008 12:25 AM (GMT)
Only if they have managed to get around the domain name issue. >_<
Sunday - March 23, 2008 12:27 AM (GMT)
Well, I think RPG-D is primarily known through the domain name, so less people will figure out they can still access RPG-D through the z15 board. But there's a lot of members online at RC&R right now, probably because if you Google redcarpet rebellion you'll get to their z6 board. Not a member of Pandora's Closet, so IDK about them.
ShinLi can just bulk email members, can't she? If so, she can just give them the z15 URL.
Disdainful Soul - March 23, 2008 12:31 AM (GMT)
Therefore... we need ShinLi.
And could someone possibly change the link on the header graphic etc? It's annoying to click on it per usual and end up with a giant G00NS message. -_-
Gowd - March 23, 2008 12:31 AM (GMT)
I've gone to quite a couple of sites to post the new link [Members RP'ing sites from this]
I think Shin-Li should..
Lothlómendil - March 23, 2008 12:34 AM (GMT)
Unfortunately, I doubt ShinLi will be back on for the rest of the day, it's already 1:30 AM for her in The Netherlands. When she does come back on, I hope she sees this message from me, and knows that I can tell her how to change her custom domain to get around this (if she needs help).
Sunday - March 23, 2008 12:38 AM (GMT)
Well, hopefully IF will get this straightened out by then -- though I doubt it. It'll probably take a few days. But waiting for a few hours won't kill anyone. :p
SkinIt might be a good place to give the z15 URL also. We're not affiliates with them, but we can advertise?
Speckleberry - March 23, 2008 12:40 AM (GMT)
On RCR's page source, a message was found:
| QUOTE |
Was it easy? Yeah.
Why'd I do it? Because there comes a time when I wonder, whose above me in skill. I've met talented hackers, and people whose genius talent has been wasted, but no one as good as I am. You think of whose on top, wondering if theres someone out there you don't know about, someone whose even better.
Then it hits you.
You're on top. |
Personally, I think it's comical that he/she wrote "whose" instead of "who's"
You'd think someone able to hack sites would learn to use spell check?
Sunday - March 23, 2008 12:42 AM (GMT)
Oh yeah, that's in the source code for that hacker message. Lame.
I wonder how hacker forums manage to stay open? I mean, hacking is illegal, isn't it? Or at least there's laws against certain instances of it. I guess American-based sites operate under free speech, and that whole "you can teach and look but not do" thing... like how you can legally sell drug paraphernalia but not drugs. XD
v I doubt they did it for 'respect,' at least not the good type.
They just wanted to prove something. They probably got banned from IF or something and decided to show them a lesson.
Gowd - March 23, 2008 12:43 AM (GMT)
Yeah, great. They have proven they can hack IF and in the process got ALOT of people angry. I doubt anyone really respects them for this, and i hope that IF takes this to court of somthing. I would. :p
[EDIT] I posted the link on RCR
Yoshitsune - March 23, 2008 12:52 AM (GMT)
They'll be eventually prosecuted, Zathius Network won't let they escape freely.
Someone already hunted the g00ns.net domain and hosting register and found the name of the responsible for the site and his 'team' and posted it on IF support boards. I believe is just a matter of time.
Sunday - March 23, 2008 12:54 AM (GMT)
g00ns is a really well known hacking place though, right?
I'm sure people have tried before, but if it's a site full of hackers, I doubt they're that vulnerable. But IDK! I hope IF gets this cleared up and protects themselves better next time. Most importantly, I hope they don't give up and tell everyone to go to ZetaBoards or IPBFree or something. I like IF. :[
Yoshitsune - March 23, 2008 12:57 AM (GMT)
Yeah, they are but I never heard of them beign eventually prosecuted, I guess now they're not dealing with small companies but with a big company with one of the biggest share in this market, things will be different.
Anyway, if you can't acess your site, try going here and looking for it:
http://tachyondecay.net/php/bin/boardfinder.php Then replace the sx (where x is the number of the server your board is hosted) for zx. You'll be able to acess your boards.
Rhi-Rhi - March 23, 2008 01:02 AM (GMT)
*shakes head* Ah, hackers. Always waving their e-peens around because thay don't have any balls in real life.
And it's pretty funny, too, because a lot of these hackers could actually make something of themselves in the business world. I mean, I know someone whose job it is to try and hack government websites and stuff so they can know where their vulnerabilities are and improve upon them. There's good honest money to be made in hacking--if they were smart about it and applied themselves in the right way. Going around hacking sites for shits and giggles is not that.
Ugh...
jyyl94 - March 23, 2008 01:03 AM (GMT)
Well, this seriously got all of us thinking of backing up our sites. I'm backing up my two boards, so, advice for all board owners ; back up your sites. Not like you just realized it now or something, LOL. I'm just glad RPG-D and rcR got backed up.
TurkFox - March 23, 2008 01:14 AM (GMT)
I'm just glad I moved away from IF!
*stands protectively in front of her sites just in case*
Yoshitsune - March 23, 2008 01:14 AM (GMT)
I'll just say to everyone with a IF or a ZB to backup as soon as possible, g00ns.net have a fame of not giving up, while Zathius may fix it and acutally take legal procedures against them, until the results they may try to strike IF/ZB again.
Not trying to strike panic or anything, but better be safe than sorry.
Emma - March 23, 2008 01:18 AM (GMT)
Okay, Emma's here now. Not that it means much, I'm sure. What I've had from my members is that they're worried that the hackers are deleting boards. I know nothing about hacking - could that be true?
Yoshitsune - March 23, 2008 01:20 AM (GMT)
I'd say, check what's happening by yourselves:
http://support.zetaboards.com/topic/158934/1/but it seems that yeah...

They've definitely gotten into the server and deleted important files necessary to run the board, but so far it's only been server one. All server one boards are currently giving a 404 error. That doesn't mean that the actual data for the board is missing, and the files are surely backed up and replaceable.
However, to actually delete information, while possible, would take so long to do that they could hardly make a dent in all the data between the time they got into the server and the time Brandon (IF's owner) put a stop to it. I'm sure that, while there will be some damage, it won't be near as bad as the server one crash.

Emma - March 23, 2008 01:25 AM (GMT)
That's reassuring. I have to go out now. I'll be back in a few hours.
Necrorose - March 23, 2008 01:27 AM (GMT)
So for us that still have those boards...where do we go...I tried IBpfree and I am stumped on the coding for it!!!! I do not want to lose my boards...Please help!!!
Mousie - March 23, 2008 01:31 AM (GMT)
And I thought my heart attacks for the day were over...
At least I have a new IPB to run to if things really do hit the fan, and I really need that back up now... but of course, can't get to support tickets. *sigh*...
For anyone with the domain name trouble -- if you're looking for a way to get around the Goons page, get yourself some free hosting that will let you take your own domain, create a splash page with your original url.
Tis what I did, and it's saved some panic attacks, I tell you! Except the one I'm having now, which is where I wake up tomorrow and find out it's all gone... gone.... gone!
Oh, and props to DS -- who was in my CBox this morning helping make sense of the drama!
Yoshitsune - March 23, 2008 01:31 AM (GMT)
Just calm down and relax, Zathius do make backups of the servers and they'll fix it eventually, but is better be safe and backup, we don't know if things could go ezboards >_<
Necrorose - March 23, 2008 01:33 AM (GMT)
I went over to the IPB but could not make sense of it!!!!
Ashwee - March 23, 2008 01:36 AM (GMT)
Is anyone else getting this error when they try to go to the thread on zetaboards?,
You do not have permission to access this topic.

No problems. The moment I realised what was going on I went around trying to contact as many RPG-Ders as possible. I tried to tell ShinLi on the TU shoutbox, but it's members only. :( I tested Tally to see if it was just the domain redirection, which it was.

Most of the member-posted information in that topic is hysterical alarm about things that haven't actually happened. People are claiming that all servers are down and that Anonymous (that anti-Scientology group) is behind it, etc. etc. Server one probably has had data deleted, but at this point we really don't know anything. From what I've personally seen on a larger number of the servers, s1 is the only one affected beyond the domain routing.
Emuerz - March 23, 2008 01:44 AM (GMT)
Tally! That's it.
Sorry, I tried to find the link to it to warn the admin and to see if it hadn't been hacked, but I couldn't remember the name. >_<
ShinLi is aware of it, or vaguely aware anyway since she acknowledged my post in the c-box. xD
Yoshitsune - March 23, 2008 01:56 AM (GMT)
Now that I've gone through 15 pages of people screaming on ZB support board I'll try to explain it better @_@ first of all sorry for my mix-match of alarmist information:
g00ns.net hackers invaded the IF/ZB domain manager, so everytime you try going to your board by the domain you'll end not being able to access your site, using the deflaut address with a /index at the end should solve the problem. Brandon, owner of ZB/IF is looking into solve the problem and is investigating it, they're trying to fix it.
They do bakup their servers so everything should be fine, but it's good for us go and backup since some of us know what happened when another forum server (ezboards) got hacked.
Please, do not register on their (g00ns.net) forums, neither access their mirc channel, do not sent any messages to them, just for the sake of security. Zathius Network will probably take legal actions, users are also taking their own actions, going to McAffe security center and FBI's Internet Crime Compaint Center (IC3) senting reports, etc.
Anyway, just calm down and wait untill they disclose more information.
