Title: Canons VS Originals
Gowd - March 17, 2008 01:37 PM (GMT)
I was just curious on what everyone thinks when they join a RP. Do you like a site where there Canons, or like to make your own, or even a bit of both? :rice: I myself prefer Originals, i luff them <3 <3
>> Sorry about spelling, I'm rather tired x.x <<
Equestrian - March 17, 2008 02:41 PM (GMT)
My only problem really with canons is that (from what I've seen) most people don't do the character justice...
Make your own characters <3
sunny - March 17, 2008 02:42 PM (GMT)
I voted both mix and match and depends on the site because it does depend on the type of site but in general I like a mix. Sometimes I'll be lost for inspiration for a character so I'll just take a canon!

I said mix and match.
Equestrian -- I LOVE YOUR SIGNATURE. BALTO <3 lmao :]]]
December, Esq - March 17, 2008 04:34 PM (GMT)
Originals ftw. I find canon lists amusing, but that's all. Now, I'm okay if someone needs a position to be filled or something, I may think about giving it a shot.
Lothlómendil - March 17, 2008 04:59 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I don't like to use other people's ideas, especially if it's not even a choice I get to make. I want to do my own thing, so originals = lurb.

What she said. ;P

Depends on the site for me. I find with originals they are not really so original anyways. I include my own in this. More and more these days I see arrogent upstarts claiming theirs is "teh bestest and most original site evah", and all I see is same old same old. At least with most canons what you see is what you get. :p
RomanHk - March 17, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
I voted Depends as well. I'll pick up either or if I feel it suits the site better. However, I will never play fanons; I'm talking about real book/movie/etc canon characters.
Faux Romance - March 17, 2008 07:13 PM (GMT)
I prefer originals, I have two characters who I love playing so I wouldn't join a site that is canons only. I also find that I can't do other's characters justice. On the other hand if I play character's sibling (one from another driver) I can generally do that if I have pretty much free reign over the personality and a good bit of the history.
SmathNa - March 17, 2008 07:32 PM (GMT)
I'll join as either a 'canon' or an original, as long as I have some creativity regarding character creation. I hate it when admins create canons so detailed no one could possibly play them adequately, or when they don't convey enough of what they want regarding the canon. But that's not a problem inherit to 'canon' sites.
I prefer sites that offer you the chance to play either canon or original, if that's what you're referring to.
Rhi-Rhi - March 17, 2008 08:03 PM (GMT)
Originals all the way! I like creating my own characters. They're my brain babies.
However, I am taking the plunge and playing a canon (as in, real book canon) character on Emma's site. Or about to once I have time today. I love that character, so I'm making an exception, and since Emma's game is so AU I don't have to be stressed about playing said canon "wrong". Works spamtabulously for me as a first time playing a canon character!
Canons as in what admins create just seem pointless and it turns me off. Why not just create a list of character archetypes you'd like to see played on the game instead? People are creative enough to take it from there. :3
Starber - March 17, 2008 10:02 PM (GMT)
Depends on the RP
But I perfer originals, because most people aren`t good at playing the canon character. With originals, you'll be able to build your character the way you want it to be.
Tulojow Nagde - March 30, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
I voted for the mix and match, though it couldhave been depends too. I generally avoid admin-created canons unless it was a character already played that is integral to the plot / site. Unless the site is based in something that has an established canon, I'd rather make my own characters. I certainly don't want to be told I have to play someone else's randomly made character.
Admittedly, I am one of those annoying people that likes to play related-to-canon characters. I like playing with dynamics and I find it a bit more of a challenge. Such situations have a high potential for being stereotyped, but if not stereotyped it can be interesting.
My Paopu Fruit - April 1, 2008 07:48 AM (GMT)
I mix and match. It all depends on the site, wether I feel I can play a cannon or if it's better I just make an original.
anjewl90 - April 1, 2008 07:55 AM (GMT)
Originals, It's awesome creating your own character and deciding how you want them.
AshBeanNun - April 13, 2008 04:39 PM (GMT)
*shrugs* As long as it's not all-canon, I don't care. I don't really see the point of a roleplay that has already been planned to the point that all the characters and plots have been picked out. Why bother joining when the admin could probably just write a fanfic/story about it and skip the roleplays completely? I prefer a site where there's some dialogue between the ideas of the admin and the ideas of the members, so that they can create something original that involves everyone, canon or original or whatever their character is.
sweet rebellion - April 13, 2008 04:41 PM (GMT)
It's cool playing canons, but I mostly like playing original characters. Characters that you thought of and you can create them however you like! I love it. <3
Rae - April 29, 2008 04:36 AM (GMT)
I prefer original, but I'm keen to playing semi-canons - characters that are requested, such as a brother/sister, father, mother, fiancee, and so forth. That way the character helps to unite the site through a family bond, and I still get some wiggle room as to which way to develop my character.
China Doll - April 30, 2008 05:40 AM (GMT)
I voted on "depending on site" because Canons could either be good or bad, just depending where... I personally go for original all the way, but Canons can be fun too ^^'
truthfullies - May 1, 2008 05:42 PM (GMT)
Generally, I don't mind canon lists. I mind having a PB set in stone because I usually have a different look intended for a character I put so much effort into
kidahGEEK - May 5, 2008 12:21 PM (GMT)
I love making new characters, it's almost an addiction, and half the fun is the absolute creation of them, making them real in my head. And I just can't do that as well with canons. After all, if it's a canon, they're not really my characters, I'm just borrowing them. I much prefer originals.
xXx
vision_afar - May 5, 2008 09:06 PM (GMT)
Depends on the board. If it's, let's say, something overflowing with plethora of wonderful canons like Marvel/DC, I'm strictly for canon-only boards.
As far as roleplays where admins make up 'canons' are concerned, I will apply for a canon position if the character itself isn't mapped out to smallest details. I'm cool with forums that specify age, job, maybe personality trait or two, but more than that? No thanks.
Blindspotdagger - May 5, 2008 11:27 PM (GMT)
If Canons aren't dependent on other canons (a character that's just a love interest) and they spark the imagination, I am all for them.
But originals can be great too. I tend to reuse my favorite characters a lot.
bloodless soul - May 7, 2008 01:13 AM (GMT)
I like originals more than anything.
Upsilamba - May 10, 2008 07:10 PM (GMT)
I prefer playing canons, but that's contingent on there being a canon I like (who is similar to one of my original characters). I like when boards have a mix of canons and originals though, because that way I can still enjoy a site even if I don't want to play any of the canons, and originals can always add drama/interest/types of characters that the canon-list writer didn't include/think of. I'm not that good at coming up with plotting ideas, so I like that canons often have some of that built in already.
Nagishma - May 10, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
Hate canons. Hate 'em with a passion, KAPOW! Honestly, there is just too much revised fandoms going on out there that it's driving me nuts. Not to say I'm against fanart or being a fan of a certain series or whatever, but when it comes to stories especially, I prefer that people be creative and come up with something uniquely their own. All 7 of my RPGs forbid the use of canons, because quite frankly, I'm familiar with most fandoms and even if I like them, I do not promote them.
Being a writer, I have a huge pet peeve about creativity as a whole. I thoroughly disagree with taking another's idea and twisting it or playing with it however you like. To me that's vandalism cus hey, that's not your story you're screwing with. Someone else came up with that idea and yet here you are taking it and distorting it to fit your fancy. That just ticks me off, and hence why I copyright all of my works, RPG ideas included.
I think what really needs to be promoted, especially in RPGs of this format, is the ability to be creative. There's just so much more fulfillment in making a character uniquely your own and rping with them in an equally uniquely created RPG world. Playing a canon character is a dime a dozen and no where near as rewarding in my mind.
Okay, I'm done with my soapbox now. XD Hope I didnt offend anyone with my little shpeel. I'm just very passionate about shat like this, so do forgive me if I came off a wee bit harsh. It wasnt intended.
Jade Dupree - May 10, 2008 09:25 PM (GMT)
I usually prefer Original characters to playing Canons, but I have played some Canons on certain sites. For me it depends on the rpg and the genre of it, as well as the Canon that I might play. Sometimes it can get hard to play a character that is well known or set a certain way.
Hera - May 24, 2008 11:26 AM (GMT)
I like both, so I support both on my board.
I think canons are good for someone who wants to join and have some pre-exisiting relationships or background, rather than just being in an anonymous void when starting out.
My canon list has suggested PBs. I don't like absolute PB - sometimes it's just not how you see the character and I don't think you should have to argue with an admin to get a face that you think suits better, unless it's from a film or something.
Harlequin - May 24, 2008 12:30 PM (GMT)
I personally dislike the idea of having canon characters. Though they can be entertaining due to lines or quirks they've had in the books/movie/TV-series/etc. it's those limitations that stops the process of originality and creativity dead-on from the beginning.
Besides, with a canon character, all the clichés, fan-fic-ideas, and relationship-shippers are so concrete it makes it hard to be given a real choice in the opinions of a character.
And then there's conflict.
'I'd be a better Ron!'
'Nono. You should be Hermionie.'
'But I don't...'
so on and so-forth.
.HALLOWEEN.HORROR. - May 24, 2008 03:01 PM (GMT)
I like customisable canons. Ones where you're given a name, maybe a few facts/short backstory, even a set PB if I don't mind them. Not so into characters who have already been planned out to the last detail though. And I won't play Marauder/Trio era canons on Harry Potter sites because there's too much background that I don't know >_<
silent cacophony - May 28, 2008 01:58 AM (GMT)
I'm not terribly into canons, but I'm not totally against them. Like, I prefer there not to be any, but if I see an RPG that I think is really really cool and has a list of pre-set canons, then I would still end up joining. It's extremely rare for me to take up a canon character -- only done it twice in my life (out of nearly 9 years of RPing), three if you include my old friend coming up to me and asking if I'd play her character's beloved brother. Don't know if that counts, though .. But the only successful attempt ended up being the time when I took up my friend's request. XD
Anyway, one of my quickest-growing pet peeves is the absolute unoriginal ideas that some people are putting forth when they write out their little subplots. Like, for example: A likes B. B likes C. A doesn't like C, but A tolerates C because A likes B. OKAY. Stuff like that is on pretty much every high school board (not to mention every teen movie) these days, and it is soooooo annoyyyiiing. >< GET ORIGINAL, PEOPLE. jeez.
CheesePlease - May 28, 2008 02:20 AM (GMT)
Really, for me, it depends on the site.
Usually the first thing I do when I go check out a site is check out the canon list [after the plot/rules, of course.] If I like what I see, I'll grab a canon, register, fill in the application and presto. We have a winner.
I usually like to use canons unless they have pre-set PBs, personalities, and such. If they have a few facts, then, I usually tend to be OK with it. If they're part of some huge subplot, I also probably won't use them; too much to follow and catch up on and just plain bleh.
As for originals, I tend to use originals when canons fail, or when I have some super duper fantabulous idea for an awesome character.
Overall, depends on the site, but I'll usually take a canon.
Brooke Davis Scott - May 28, 2008 02:29 AM (GMT)
I picked mix and match, because I've become rather fond of originals lately.. I really didn't think I would be, though.. I used to be all canons ftw, but after seeing some originals develop, I think they're awesome too, when played/developed right
Tammi - May 31, 2008 08:02 PM (GMT)
Customizable canons!
My current second character I only chose because of the name. Hybrid Holocaust. His gender and name were the only things specified.
I personally like picking up characters that have familial ties- it's more fun for me than playing a wandering nomad, or someone without any family.
I rarely choose to pick up a canon if they have a lot of specifications. Heck, sometimes I want to play a canon, but they have a really lame name, or a name I dislike (and it cannot be changed), so I don't. I just like having IC connections. Being about to change some things are good. Having a rough personality is good sometimes- like "This character is a decent person, gets into trouble a bit, good relations with his family" and go from there. A bit of specification is good, but not a lot. c:
Apple - June 2, 2008 09:23 PM (GMT)
Definitely originals. I like to completely customize characters and add them into the plot in my own way.
mikeneko - June 3, 2008 03:07 PM (GMT)
mix & match. It depends if the canon are interesting or not and if i can do something with them.
murder_101 - June 8, 2008 09:49 AM (GMT)
Whenever I join a site the canon's are always usually snatched up anyway. But if I make my own site I tend to always make an original character because I don't think I could pull off one of the canon's. But then again I always make a canon shortly afterwards just to get things going anyway because it just makes more sense.
The only problem with me when I make a canon is that I get too into character, and then it shows in all of my other characters too.
But really it completely depends on the site that I've joined/created because if I join a really great RPG about a great tv show/movie/book etc, then I will create a canon (If I like the characters anyway). But with other sites I dislike a lot of characters so i just tend to create original ones to balance things out a little bit.
Bandit_Behind_Bars - June 9, 2008 08:17 AM (GMT)
almost all the time I pick up a canon character or two... But when I do make originals I usually already have a plot in mind with a friend or two. It makes it easier for me to get going on a new board if I have a buddy or am pre-involved with others
