Title: St. Patrick's Day And The Irish
radtardedx - March 11, 2008 09:16 PM (GMT)
Lmao. Well I'm Irish so yeah, had to be the one to make this topic I guess. xD
Yep I live in good oul Ireland.
No I have never seen a leprechaun.
No, leprechauns do not exist.
No I'm not related to St. Patrick.
Most important: LEPRECHAUNS DON'T EXIST!! XD
Basically, I kind of find it strange that some Americans have an obsession for Irish people?? I don't mean some of you, I mean, in general, there are some American people. Like for example.. I was on my holy communion thingy in a touristy kinda town, in my white dress and amazing shoes (which I ruined, incidently), and I was on a boat thing on a lake.
An American couple came up to me and were doting all over me. The woman was like "Oh my GOSH, you are ADORABLE, I love your dress. Isn't it just darling? Can we take a photograph?!" And here was me thinking, yeah I'm 8 years old.. please go away. Anyway my mum gave them permission, they probably still have it and that scares the living daylights out of me.
But yeah I seriously don't get it?? I mean yeah it's cool being Irish etc, etc, etc, proud of nationality, etc, etc, but what makes us so appealing that the US have a bigger St. Pat's day parade than us LOL. I mean the Dublin parade.. feckin' decent enough, but the NY parade is like... HUGE. It's so scary...
Anyway yeah here's the St. Pat's topic.
Questions?
Who better to ask lol.
PS - Leprechauns don't exist... :p

I want a big parade for St Pats day.. except I'd call it the: Mousie's Birthday Parade.
So, uh.. yeah. St Pats has always been pretty big for me. Especially this year with the turning 21 and stuff, but there's not usually a heap about to help celebrate it. I mean, every pub takes advantage - there's always huge St Pats pub nights (as in, can't get into one ... which absolutely sucked on my eighteenth)... but no parades or anything... that I know of.
Hah, I should actually check that out...

Well, the big St. Patrick's Day parades in the US were started by Irish immigrants from way-back-whenever. Therefore, I take no responsibility :p
And believe me, most Americans realize that leprechauns do not exist. At least, the few sane Americans realize that leprechauns do not exist. Also, I'm proud to say my parents have never been to Ireland and we don't have a picture of you in our house... we might have pictures of some random English children though, so if some weird American lady with yellow hair took your picture when you were little, PM me =] Personally, I only celebrate St. Patrick's Day because I love the color green and I enjoy a day when most of my country wears it.

*dons green outfits and grabs a shalale* (Woah, spelled that way wrong.)
I'm Irish American and I celebrate St Patrick's Day. Woohoo! Everyone seems to think that I'm straight off the boat from Ireland. Anyways, St Patrick's Day has been moved this year so as to not conflict with Holy Week.

Moved St Pats?
How do you MOVE St Patricks Day? That's like... moving Christmas! Meep. It has to be the 17th of March, or it's just not right.
Mind you -- I break the St Pats rules by holding my Blue Day that day... mwuahaha.

Most likely they were taking a picture of you because you were eight years old and cute in your communion dress, not because they're obsessed with Irish people. ;) Though I'm sure your accent probably made you even cuter.
And St. Patrick's day is bigger in the US than it is in Ireland because there are more people of Irish decent in American than there are in Ireland. There are about 44 million people of Irish decent living in the US. The entire population of Ireland is only 5.6 million, and that's including people who aren't ethnically Irish. Also, it's big because we like to have a good excuse to go drinking and we tend to commercialize holidays. ;)
I myself am primarily Irish, Scotch, and English and very distantly Dutch. And I've got the pale skin, freckles, and green eyes to prove it. ;)

All you people saying leprechauns don't exist are so going to feel the wrath of their pranks on St. Patty's... I do not envy you at all.
:p

I dunno 'bout the U.S., but in Canada area where I'm from, we just love St. Patrick's Day 'cause if someone doesn't wear green, you get to pinch 'em! Wahaha. Plus, when I was in about the first grade, my mom dressed me up all in green and gave me a little pouch with chocolate gold coins, so if anyone caught me (I was very little and could have passed for a leprechaun), they got a coin! lol. Fond memories.
I would LOVE to visit Ireland, but mostly 'cause I think the castles would be totally wicked. Plus, I love the Irish accent. LURV it. All accents are cool. I feel so accent-less...

Happy St Paddies, everyone! WOOOOOOO!
... I'm 21 and invincible!

hmm ... used to depend on the year for me, I guess. Mostly because it depends on when Mardi Gras fell. Yeah, I'm from New Orleans and some years Mardi Gras is late and is a bit close to St Pats day. After 2 months of continuous parades and the Mardi Gras craziness, the small one day parades can be hard to get excited about. But, if Mardi Gras is earlier, we've had some quiet time and it is easier to get excited.
Though, I am rather enthusiastic about Irish music so I get personally excited to some degree. Though, I find that most celebrations and 'pubs' in the US tend to butcher Irish music so that dampers it too.

Yay Happy Birthday Mousie! yay for you!
I don't celebrate St. Pats. I didn't even realise it was until I got home and went 'oh, it's Mousie's birthday today'. So yeah, not a big thing for us over here in NZ.

Happy birthday Mousie! :) *is glad 21 is a long way away from her because she is definitely not ready for that*
I normally don't really wear green, I just have a green hairband on my wrist or something to prevent myself from being pinched.

Radtardedx is right. Leprechauns don't exist. They were eaten by the Pooka after a shoe deal went very, very wrong.
I suspect that radtardedx is a Pooka herself. Nasty thing.
Eh, my family came over from Ireland. My great-great grandfather was a fisherman and my great-great mother was like a house maid or something.
I don't really remember celebrating St Pat's Day. My clan must have been a bunch of rebels or criminals or something.
I would like to see Ireland someday, though. It's on my list of places. I don't think the Irish are quaint. I do find the accent sexy. Accents in general are. It smacks of a different world from your own.
My roleplay is set in Magical Ireland, not to be confused with real Ireland. We don't have anything in common, 'cept maybe the sheep...
Anyway, I am wearing my green eyes today. Should be enough to get me through...
