Title: Time Capsules

December, Esq - February 29, 2008 01:39 AM (GMT)
(The topic about Feb 29th reminded me of this.)

Has anyone here ever made a time capsule for him/herself? (A time capsule, for those who don't know, is some sort of package you put together about yourself now so that you can open it on a set date in the future and see how you changed.) It's a fascinating concept which I tried when I was younger, but it didn't work out because I opened up the capsule every few months and I didn't actually put much information in it.

What sort of things would you put inside the time capsule? Would you just make a letter and tuck it away for yourself for x years or would you literally assemble things in a capsule (box) of some sort?

If you did it, how did it turn out? Would you recommend it for other people? How much time did you have between when you made the capsule and when you opened it?

I'm actually doing one and will finish and lock it when I get out of college, then I'll open it when my children graduate from college. :)

Holy crap. You're already planning for children. o_0 Wow. And here I was thinking of a time capsule for 5 years was a long time.

Once in junior high we made a time capsule--I think it was 6th grade--and we were supposed to open it in 8th grade but the teacher lost it. XD

Hehehe, we made one in grade four... which we were supposed to dig up at the end of the year, but our teacher couldn't find it again when he went to get it. We think the landcare group planted a tree on it.

It was kinda funny, but kinda sad. I put my favourite little plastic kitty in that time capsule...

Well, if I have to do something in the future, it better be the future.

I wrote myself a letter in year 8 which I have to open....next year! Which will be exciting because I have no idea what's in it. I wouldn't know what to put in an actual capsule though. Perhaps I shall write one when I finish high school and look at it when I finish uni.

I had to do a letter thing in the very beginning of high school. It asked us all sort of lame-a** cheesy questions, which annoyed me to no end. They were all like "get in touch with your feelings" sort of thing, which I don't do very well. Okay, I don't do at all. I'm a thinker, not a feeler. (According to the Kersey test or whatever it's called.) Anyways, I ended up drawing silly pictures all over it. Then in senior year when I opened it, I was a little disappointed, but I didn't blame myself at all for not filling it out properly.

Hmm... I think I may do one. I mean, I really can't see myself in the future, so it would be interesting, in the future, to see how I felt in the past. December, your story is kind of funny. :D

I haven't done anything like a time capsule before, at least not with the intention of ever reopening it anyway. I did pack away a few things in a box when I was younger (which was supposed to go to a charity but didn't for some reason) once. I opened the box last year just to see what was inside, and was quite surprised to see it was that box. It even had my favorite Izzy (the 1996 Olympic mascot) stuffed toy inside.

...Of course I did finally sent it of to the charity like it was supposed to. ^^;;;

I know a few friends of mine is planning to do a time capsule at the end of the year. I think I might join them.

Because of this thread and the leap year one, I decided to make a time capsule for my daughter, Sophia. She is only 1 now but I put a picture of her, her hand print, a letter from me and an article of clothing that she just grew out of. I figure every leap year this will be a fun little thing for her to open and see how much she grew over 4 years.

When my primary school was demolished so they could build a new one in its place, the entire school contributed something to a time capsule. Granted there were only 80-something kids in the whole place at the time...

I put in a newspaper that myself and a couple of friends had started up which covered school news and gossip. I wish I still had a copy of that, because it was great. ^_^
