Title: Sophia's Age Is Starting To Show.
captain oats. - February 16, 2008 07:26 PM (GMT)
this rant has probably been composed a million times, but i feel the need to vent.
im on a site with someone using sophia bush, the ever popular pb, for some reason, on a FIFTEEN YEAR OLD.
sophia age shows. she's 25, i think, and you can see it. she just doesnt look like a teenager, and this irritates me when people use her for them.
okay, i may be a bit of a hypocrite; im using mischa barton for an eighteen year old, but at least she looks like she can pull it off.
gaaaah.
okay, end rant.

I once used a 32 year old as an 18 year old. XD
But I know what you mean. There are plenty of younger people who look enough like Sophia Bush-type that you would think that people would be able to find someone else.

I got tired of seeing Sophia used in that way that I just banned her on my sites. Her and all the OTH people, who can't pass for high schoolers anymore than she can. She's definitely the worst though (her and Bethany Joy Galeotti or w/e), because she doesn't even look 25. She looks older than that, IMO.... actually, she looks like a soccer mom.
So I totally hear ya. Death to Sophia Bush... as a PB. XD
.Ra - February 16, 2008 11:39 PM (GMT)
Hahaha… a soccer mom? I sure hope I look like Sophia Bush when my daughter is old enough to start playing sports. (happy)
But I do agree that people tend to use the same people over and over. But I tend to get more annoyed when they use Victoria Secret models as 15 year olds. I guess that just seems to be a growing trend on some of the real life sites I have joined.

Age appropriate PBs PLEASE!
One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to rp. Drives me effing nuts. And it goes both ways. I've seen people with characters in their 30s who look like 20 year olds. Gah!!!!!!!
(angry)
Disdainful Soul - February 17, 2008 03:42 AM (GMT)
I've seen some bad PB choices in my time.
Actors going on 50 for 20 year old characters.
12 year old actresses for 19 year old characters.
And Angelina Jolie as a 13 year old Asian girl.

o__o.
I have lost all faith in the roleplay world if that's true. That's just insane... I'll admit to being guilty of using a twenty year-old for a sixteen year-old... but I've never made the age gap more than five years. Unless the actor actually looks about three years younger than they are (example: Thomas Sangster).
It really bothers me as well... seeing too-old play-bys, or too-young play-bys. And then of course the over-used play-bys. I personally enjoy searching for play-bys who suit the time period and character, if you really like your character, you shouldn't mind searching a bit.

Totally awesome.
I think if I were the admin on that site, I'd make them change. I'm not too picky, honestly, when it comes to ages. Unless, of course it 1) doesn't look like the character at all (such as said example above) or 2) there is someone who can better represent the character.

That PB choice was pretty indicative of the whole site's quality, actually. The PB choices were the best thing about it.
As well as age, I wish people would take race into consideration. I don't want Olsen twin Patel twins and white Dean Thomases, people! And I don't want to see really bad sibling choices, either. My first reaction to seeing (the really dark-skinned pics, to boot) Adriana Lima and Sophia Bush passed off as full-blooded siblings is not, "OMG THEY LOOK TOTALLY ALIKE!" regardless of how much the player says it OOCly. I don't see it. Coz... uh... yeah.
Gah.

In Pride and Prejudice, the BBC version, Jennifer Ehle was thirty playing a twenty year old. She was so AWESOME. She didn't look a day over twenty. Proof that older people can look a lot younger.
I dunno about Sophia Bush because I don't know what she looks like, but older people suck for playing younger people. I can't think of any character on my site whose PB looks a lot older than they do. One girl did try to get away with Audrey Kitching for a 13 year old.

I must seriously come from a different RP-ing background than other people.
The first RPG I joined was a post-Hogwarts. Your character went from 11 to adult in a matter of months (like four months or something). So you're basically aging a decade in 4 months, right. You are absolutely not allowed to change your PB there. So it's actually advisable to get a much, much older PB. Gerard Butler as an 11-year-old is kind of ridiculous, but when you realize that character will be 40 before the end of the year, it makes a lot more sense.
I guess I was desensitized. I'm honestly not too picky about PBs unless they're so inappropriate that it makes me cringe--like Angelina Jolie as an Asian girl :D
Lexeh - February 18, 2008 12:43 AM (GMT)
biggest PB issue to me was emily browning as one of the zabini children. *sigh* why is so hard for people to pick PB who are of a different ethnic background? i mean, tyra banks would've been fine....even though she's got like a HUGE forehead.
>__>;;;;;
still...yeah. that irked me. and i agree with the sophia bush thing...even though i dun watch oth. anyone else notice the GG cast is suddenly popping up all over the HP RPGS?
*is totally guilty of that one* he's a seventh year though! At least i don't try to pass him off as a fifth/fourth year. u_u
Darth Makar - February 18, 2008 12:59 AM (GMT)
What is GG? Golden Girls?
:erm:
Lexeh - February 18, 2008 01:22 AM (GMT)

Yothe main characters of the series have been popping up on some random HP PBs

I think its... Gossip Girl. Not that I've seen it, but heard plenty about it on here.
rosalieart - February 18, 2008 02:34 AM (GMT)
XD i'd have to say the best pb of all time is- for everyone- just not o have them. if you can describe what the characer looks like, which isn't too hard, a play by is really just extra baggage, and it leads to... annoyances like this. XD
but anyway. i've seen worse.
i've actually seen sophia bush played as an African American woman of fifty. :erm:
that was a real  situation if you ask me. XD

My favorite recent PB faux-paus was Alexis Bledel being used as the child of Blaise Zabini. Umm? Even if her mother was white, I don't even think it's possible for the kids to have such pale skin, bright blue eyes, and fine brown hair. Come on, let's be realistic here. Oh wait, I forgot, RP-land is based in Caucasia.

I have to agree on the eyes, but my aunt is half black, half white, and is paler than my (white) mother. I myself, being biracial, still managed to have very fine hair, dark blond in color. Though I do agree that it's unreasonable to assume that, in an RPG, all PBs have to be white, lest you be smited by the Caucasoid Smiter (yeah, couldn't come up with a better name :p).
That being said, I'd totally allow Angelina as the 13 year old Asian girl, just because I find it funny XD
Sunday - February 18, 2008 03:20 AM (GMT)
Yes, you're right. It's ignorant to assume part-black people can't look like Alexis Bledel. But it was just so obvious this girl didn't know/care about the black parentage. It actually didn't say anything about it in the canon list, which could explain it, but it was pretty heavily mentioned in the later HP books that Blaise was black, sooo that was pretty ridonkulous -- to me, anyway, haha.
Disdainful Soul - February 18, 2008 03:22 AM (GMT)
Slightly OT: Has anyone taken a close look at
Vanessa William's eyes lately? They're quite clearly not brown. CSI actor Gary Dourdan has light eyes, too - they're listed as green on profiles. I think both of them have mixed heritage, though.
antisocialist87 - February 18, 2008 03:24 AM (GMT)
I generally say to myself...
If people want to have CoC...WOULD IT KILL YOU TO USE A PLAY-BY OF COLOR?
It's one of those things that irk the crap out of me, largely because there is just a dearth of them on a lot of sites. Angelina Jolie as a 13 year old Asian is hilarious - so hilarious that I would promptly tell the player "Good joke, now please be serious."
RomanHk - February 18, 2008 04:58 PM (GMT)
Maybe it would make a difference if you label the character their ethnicity. Some people honestly have no clue.
dramallama56 - February 19, 2008 01:57 AM (GMT)
Oh I TOTALLY know what you mean here. I do it all the time though. In fact, I made Topher Grace 10 years younger than he is and he probably can't pull that off so well. But I figured it would be a young-looking Topher Grace playing an old-looking college student :D

There are people who don't look their age, or even one or two years either side. I'm 21 and get confused for 15/16 all the time - it's just a combination of being short and having a very round, youthful face. Meanwhile there are kids who pass for older, even when not standing next to young-looking ones like me.
So if you are playing a character who does look older than they actually are (like, at 13 they were mistaken for 17, and have kept that age difference lookswise since then) it makes sense to either use an older PB or someone else who does have that look to them. Same with those who look younger.
However, there is a point where the extreme does not work.

And sometimes there are people who choose to make CoCs... and then pick a white PB.
Some people are just dumb.
