Title: Highlighting Text As You Read It
RENTal lot - January 24, 2008 08:51 PM (GMT)
I've just noticed this but I always have a habit of highlighting anything I read on the computer. Even text on graphics sometimes. Anyone else do this?
I know, stupid discussion, but I have to know.

I only highlight if someone's using some ridiculously tiny font or coloring it something hard to distinguish from the background. That is, only if I have to read it. Unless it's a necessity or I'm really curious about what they're saying, I won't bother to read it at all.
My cousin does it all the time though. Well, she used to. I dunno if she still does. When we were in middle school and we'd read fanfiction together (her family lived with mine for a while and we shared one computer), I had to get used to reading the highlighted text.

Well, that's an interesting habit.
I only highlight fonts that make my eyes want to shrivel up, and sometimes that doesn't even work. And, of course, I leave secret messages in some of my IC posts, so I highlight everything to see if anybody else does it too.

I do the same thing. Not to read it, though, but more like a nervous habit -- I'm hyperkinetic, so moving the mouse and clicking around and highlighting keeps my hands busy while I'm reading something long. XD
Hogwarts Unleashed - January 24, 2008 11:08 PM (GMT)
I do this sometimes. If there's a board with a black background and a bright font, I have to because otherwise I start seeing funny lines and that annoys me to no end... It's not that weird of a habit.
RomanHk - January 25, 2008 03:08 AM (GMT)
I do it for the same reasons Shadow does. Small font is particularly annoying.
Mousie - January 25, 2008 03:45 AM (GMT)
I do for odd font colours. Size I use the glorious ctrl+ function, and that's all good. Mostly I have no reason to highlight text, unless I believe there's something else there... it's just not something I do.
It seems a little strange to me over all, but whatever floats your boat!
RENTal lot - January 25, 2008 05:15 AM (GMT)
I guess it must be a nervous habit of mine as well. Both my hands need to be moving like 24/7, I swear to god. When I'm not doing anything else I'll just be constantly flexing my fingers.
I do it more on unreadable fonts too but I can read size 0 with relative ease (though I prefer normal sized ones thank you very much). It's just dark grey on black. Bargh.
nadja - January 25, 2008 07:19 AM (GMT)
if there's a lot of text, then, yeah, i'll highlight it. i'll also highlight it if i'm being distracted and need to make sure i keep my place or if i've been reading a lot already and my eyes feel like they're getting ready to bleed...
i also have a habit of copying and pasting when i go to make my replies but i'm just weird like that. it's usually most obvious when i hit the post button and the post before mine is included.
Mousie - January 25, 2008 10:26 AM (GMT)
Haha, there are many strange ways of doing things. I'll tend to hit quote when there's a particular post I want to go over, not necessarily to reply directly - but so it's in mind when I'm writing. Usually do that here though, not so much when RPing, though would probably help with class topics... where several different things are going on at once, but you're only really replying to one or two people.
But highlighting, no.. not me...
Panda - January 25, 2008 05:10 PM (GMT)
ALL the time! Unless the text is black, I will highlight to read. It makes it easier, yet when I'm reading on a dark background with a light font, I get headaches ^_^.
Carey Moffett - January 26, 2008 01:56 AM (GMT)
I don't. Often I find with small or funny fonts it distorts it so I have to work hard to read it anyway.
My solution for small fonts is not even reading them. For example, I never, ever read nadja's posts (sorry) because it hurts my eyes too much. I could zoom in but that tends to stretch the font so it's really wide and not much bigger. So I don't bother.
I always have problems with RPG-D's colour so I'm very glad we are having a revamp.
missmossxx - January 26, 2008 02:03 AM (GMT)
I tend to highlight when there is a lot of text, so I can keep my place in the text if I get momentarily distracted. I also highlight if the colours don't have enough contrast, or too much.
Little font doesn't bother me at all. I try not to use it in short posts but in long posts it makes this look much neater and more organised. I have bad eyesight too, I'm short sighted, but I don't usually have a problem. If I've been reading something for ages, and that's normal sized or small text.. I will sometimes used control plus, just so I don't have to think to read it XD
Puppeteer - January 26, 2008 07:13 PM (GMT)
I always do but I have old eyes that cannot comprehend the tiny font on computers. *blinks*
Ashaaa =] - January 26, 2008 07:26 PM (GMT)
oh-em-gee =P
I totally do this.
I don't know why.
It just makes things easier for me to read.
And being a bit plastic [hate saying that] i only wear my glasses for a fashion statement even though i actually need them for reading on computers.
So, because they are lilac, i only wear them if they match my jewlery or eye shadow etc.
Dumb, eh? XD
Ariana - January 27, 2008 12:39 AM (GMT)
Hah!
I definitely do this. People always give me weird looks because if we're reading something together (on the computer, obviously) I'll be spaztically highlighting all over the place. I also highlight from the bottom of a paragraph, so that I can unhighlight is once I finish the word. *dork*
Tammi - January 27, 2008 12:44 AM (GMT)
I only highlight when necessary. Normally, I end up increasing the font size, since people love using tiny fonts ;__;
Sometimes I need to highlight AND increase the font size, which makes me sad. :c
RENTal lot - January 27, 2008 09:41 AM (GMT)
Wow I never expected this to get so many replies. It's actually quite surprising so many people do. All my friends just give me the "what the hell are you doing" face.
I used to highlight the square around youtube videos before I switched to firefox which won't let me. *grumbles about firefox only highlighting text & images*
If you don't know what I'm talking about in the above paragraph don't worry. It's... hard to explain lol.
Danii - January 28, 2008 05:23 AM (GMT)
Is it weird I got excited when I saw this thread?
I do this ALL the time. Not just to read it either. I will highlight a line that I'm not even reading too, I will be reading some line, and highlighting another.. I also highlight as I read as well, no matter what the font or color (ironically, when I highlite something, the font turns pink and the 'highlite' part is white..)
But yea, I highlite things all the time for no real reason.... my mom always yells at me to stop highliting it lol. Even as I sit here and think, I keep highliting the text...
Indy - January 28, 2008 03:40 PM (GMT)
I only highlight when its dark fonts on dark backgrounds, or really tiny fonts, or when I'm reading something and have to run off, sort of like a bookmark. Most of the times I just put my face really close to the screen and squint, which, I guess, isn't really that good for my eyes. XD
