Title: Blimmin' Phpbb 3

Carey Moffett - January 16, 2008 02:27 AM (GMT)
It's so haaaard! -wails- I don't even know what the difference is between a Template and a Theme! I can't skin it!

And no matter what I do I can't change anything, even though I've changed the colours of a third of the Theme! The only thing that has changed colour at all is the copyright. -pulls hair out- I'll be dead before I can work this out!

Why is PHPBB 3 so difficult?

I know exactly what you mean. The normal phpBB is SO easy to skin! Like ridiculously easy! Phpbb3...it haunts my dreams. ;_; It's so awesome looking, but it's really complicated.

I haven't looked at my testing forum for a while...XD It scares me.

I do believe you need to find a file called "colors.html" and that's where you can change all the colors. Also, overall_header.html, overall_footer.html...that's where you can fiddle with images and whatnot. I believe that's where I resized the board width. The coding is a pain to read, a lot of it I don't quite understand. XD

I don't even quite remember what I did. All I did was literally read through all the files and codes and whatnot for a really long time and experiment. Also save a copy of the original files in case you make any mistakes. x3

Are RotE and SotE just phpbb 2 then? Hmm. colors.html. I shall look for that!

I've changed the board width, I just added width: 850px; and margin: 0 auto; to the wrap (following a tutorial) but the rest of it just blows my mind.

EDIT: There is no colors.html, not in the acp anyway. Maybe I have to download something and edit it in notepad?

EDITEDIT: I love subsilver! It's so much easier than ProSilver! I can change colours and everything! And the style is more what I want -phew- And their names are much more sensible aaand they have less code so I'm not going wth? Hooray!

Rhi-Rhi - January 16, 2008 08:07 AM (GMT)
SubSilver? Really? 8D I never messed with that as by the time I got done messing with ProSilver I was just all "I DUN WANNA! D8"

But if it's easier...*shifty eyes*

And yeah, bith SotE and RotE are currently running on pbpBB2. XD The style is SubSilver, too, but SubSilver for phpBB3 is very much updated and overhauled.

As you now know (after chatting on MSN), SubSilver is sooo easy! Everyone who has problems with Prosilver, go Subsilver. Sure it looks less spiffy, but at least you can get it to do what you want!

Mousie is a little scared of moving away from Invisionfree for this reason. She has only just got the hang of that CSS, and she likes it. She can do stuff with it! One day Mousie will step out of her comfort zone, and the world will be frightened by what she produces.

Bahaha.

I did take a look at the PhpBB3 skinning stuff.. and yes, I beat my head in, cried, and ran away.

Bravely, bold Sir Mousie...

Poke me on MSN if you're still having problems, I'll try and sort you out :)

Then you'd have no problem. All CSS is the same. The only difference is where you put it.

A theme includes many templates. I have themes that include thousands of templates. Each template is its own, customizable bit of code. I have templates that range from tens of thousands of lines to those that contain all of 1 line of code. The advantage is that each template can have its own call functions and markup, etc. You have the advantage of modifying just the navigation bar, or just the forum bit, for example.

If you get the hang of it, the template system is vastly superior to the IF system. If you're unsure, make a test board, start fidgeting with it, and move when you're comfortable.
