Title: Would You Join [insert Forum Host Here]?
Roswenth - December 21, 2007 08:21 PM (GMT)
When you respond, also note which one you prefer to admin, if you would please.
Konan - December 21, 2007 08:26 PM (GMT)
IF and IPBfree. I'm just used to them and even their basic template is easy on the eyes. I hate proboards and I'm not too good with ZB.
=/
RENTal lot - December 21, 2007 08:28 PM (GMT)
I don't care, when I'm joining. When I admin it, it depends what my rpg is about.
If it's more mature, I'd go for Invision, Zeta, or IPB. If it's a theme younger players would prefer, probably proboards. I started using proboards a while ago and I've used it for a long time, but I find the control panel of the rest easy to get used to.
As for which one I usually use; well I like ZB. I love unlimited subforums. Still, it seems irrelevant most of the time, since I usually don't use subboards in sub-boards.
I think it's the content, not the board, that makes me choose. Though, to answer the question properly, I like Invision for joining and probably ZB or PB for hosting. They're the easiest for me to use.
Rhi-Rhi - December 21, 2007 09:11 PM (GMT)
When joining? Doesn't matter to me! I don't get it when people say some forums are confusing (when it comes to joining games, not admining them). They're all basically the same. *shrug* Post button, new topic button, profile link...all the same. And they can all be skinned to look decent--yes, even proboards. I've seen some gorgeous proboards. The only thing I don't like about proboards is the code you have to enter with each post, but it's a minor annoyance, takes only five seconds.
When admining, I use phpbb. I love it. It's easy (to me), I can do anything with it, and I can create my own TOS. Booyaka. It's wonderful and flexible, and hosted on my own server. Yay! <3
Darth Makar - December 21, 2007 10:22 PM (GMT)
I would rather join a fantastic RPG on some crappy server than a crappy RPG on a fantastic server. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder--I really couldn't care less what forum host I'm on.
The only one I've ever admined, though, is Invision Free. I have nothing against the others, but I'm the most comfortable with IF. Maybe one day I'll branch out.
pathogenicoma - December 22, 2007 03:15 AM (GMT)
I think refusing to join a game because of the host, is stupid. If the game is good, I'll join it, I don't care what it is hosted on, as long as I can navigate and read with ease.
As for admining... So far I've only admined invisionfree, phpBB and IPB (i miss my board [cries]). But, it's not that hard to figure out how to use different admin panels. And usually they have tech support forums for that type out on the web somewhere!
lemondrops - December 22, 2007 03:17 AM (GMT)
I opted for Invisionfree and IPBFree, but I will actually join most of them. However, I HATE proboards.
My favorite that I've come across for administration purposes is actually spreeBB (free version of IPB) just because of the multiple skins, because of the ones I've tried it was the only one with that option built in (prior to ZetaBoards)
antisocialist87 - December 22, 2007 03:18 AM (GMT)
I don't care, really. My belief is that a solid storyline is on ALL types of boards, and has any kind of graphic quality. A good story transcends all the pretty, shiny, flash in the pan crap.
Which is why my own board is relatively austere in terms of graphics.
RomanHk - December 22, 2007 06:52 AM (GMT)
I go more by what the admin does with the host than what the host itself actually is. An obnoxious IF site is the same as an obnoxious Proboards, etc site to me. However, I tend not to surf Proboards because they sorta have a reputation for looking ugly despite several very well put together ones that I've come across.
Mousie - December 22, 2007 08:46 AM (GMT)
I always favour IF, because I've had the time to learn to understand it. But for joining, I'm not overly fussy. I have been known to join the odd Proboards, though they do sit at my least favoured forum software because of the loading time.
For adminning, I'm an IF/IPBFree girl, again.. because I understand it. I want to try my hand at Zeta, I love the capabilities of phpBB3 - but if I were to admin one, I'd want a decent server to keep up with it. And money is a problem. I also love the look of SMF, but I don't think it's right for me.
Panda - December 22, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
I am noob.
I didn't see the "I don't care!!" option at the bottom, so voted for the one I prefer to admin instead.
Brain is over there -points- with phpbb3 today.
I think if I were to somehow pull an extra 12 hours out of my arse per day so that I could have more time available for my leisure activities, it wouldn't matter where the board was hosted. It's not a great shame if it's proboards, invisionfree, SMF or network54 (remember those?). I've played on all and eh, a forum is a forum. I don't use tiny font, I don't change font colours and really, the only thing I want to be able to do is post without a cut off point. I used to have issues with boards where it cut me off! It would be all, 'nope, you ain't posting here, Go'way.' And I would have to post like three times to get my entire post in.
I love phpbb for admining. Ezboard demanded too much money and we relied on donations from members. Invisionfree and proboards had the adverts back in the days when firefox wasn't in popular use. IPB was the bane of my existence. PHPBB allows me a lot more flexibility in an environment where I can control everything. One thing about me?
I have to have control of everything, if I am going to be controlling something at all. Sad, but true.
Manowar3 - December 22, 2007 01:33 PM (GMT)
If a board looks good, is up to my standards, is friendly and active I really don't give a donkey what host it is on. I'll join them all, though IF is my favourite.
sarahj - December 22, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)
I would join a good site on any host, except for maybe Proboards. I started out admining at proboards and for me, a move to Invisionfree was a big step up. I'm currently admining at IF and am about to start a site at ZB, but I'm worried about the skinning. As far as the other forum hosts, it's not that I wouldn't join a board solely because it wasn't IF, I'd just have to be a member at that type of forum before I admined at one to get a better feel for it.
Hogwarts Unleashed - January 20, 2008 05:02 PM (GMT)
I said I don't care simply because my preferences weren't an option. I like Invisionfree and PhpBB. I've run one of each and can say i definatley prefer Invisionfree to run but PhpBB is fun to belong to. Sure, there's not as much coding freedom but for generic boards that aren't RP sites. I belong to a roller coaster forum that's phpBB and it's great.
. __applerue - January 20, 2008 05:25 PM (GMT)
I will only join or admin Invisionfree. I dislike ProBoards with a passion, and I've attempted PhpBB and Zetaboards, but I'm most comfortable with IF. =D
Tammi - January 24, 2008 12:02 AM (GMT)
I only join InvisionFree and IPB. Though, lately, I've found myself steering away from IF in favour of subdomain and domain hosted IPB boards.
I don't really like anything hosted for free due to the bothersome ads. They're a pain to code layouts in since I have Adblock Plus and don't see them, but when I view on IE, there are ads! D:
Yeah. So I prefer using my version of IPB 1.3 for forums and joining boards that are IPB 1.3.
I also prefer 1.3 to the higher versions. 2.0 and up is such a bother to code and although the moderation is a bit nicer, I really dislike the Admin CP. It's also a real hassle since it uses different coding and my forum has had countless errors and MySQL problems with it, so we downgraded to 1.3.
As for the other forums, I don't even consider them. Proboards is horrible, phpBB is annoying. Admining and skinning IPB is so easy and wonderful :3 It's set up really well and I really don't like Proboards. It looks ugly and changes to the board width uses Scripts! Lame! D<
Ezzelin - February 21, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
I've admin'd both invisionfree and proboards, and I really like invisionfree better. Probably just habit. Invisionfree tends to feel more flexible to me.
Claire-de-lune - February 21, 2008 03:47 AM (GMT)
I picked IF and IPB. Proboards and a couple others are fine, I'm not saying they aren't. But I like sticking with what's been god for me. If a plot was good enough and the site was active I don't care about the host.
As for adminning I'm sticking to IF. Anything else confuses the heck out of me.
China Doll - February 21, 2008 04:26 AM (GMT)
Invisionfree and IPB most definitely! I can't stand Proboards.. its just eh! So yeah I voted for IPB and IF ^^
Karah - February 24, 2008 12:32 AM (GMT)
Only invisionfree. It's strictly a visual thing. I don't like the way any of the other ones are set up when the forums are made.
Eiji - February 24, 2008 01:00 AM (GMT)
Join? Any. I'm with Dec on this one.
As for admining? Well, I WOULD admin any, even if I have to learn the ropes first, I don't mind as long as the RP is good. As for creating aboard, I'll join the masses here and go for IF. I love ipbfree, but I hate their directory for some reason.
As for Zetaboards, let's say I can't wait for it to have some nice skins to choose from. Zboards are in y humble opinion the best kind out there. I did make a beta board to try it and I was delighted out of y mind. I even played around with the codes and it's not too hard making it look somewhat decent, so with a little time in my hands I would definitely go for the Z.
So far I'm still lazy, but I'm already in queue to have my IFsite transfered to zetaboards.
XZol - February 24, 2008 01:14 AM (GMT)
Honestly I prefer IPBFree and Invisionfree boards because I find them easier to navigate, though I would be willing to join just about any type of board if the content is interesting. As for adminning again I really prefer IPBFree and Invisionfree.
Emma - February 24, 2008 01:18 AM (GMT)
Any. Easy. I prefer IPBFree or phpBB3 to admin but I'll also admin any. I love new choices so I'm willing to try any forum software at least once.
That Other Gal - February 24, 2008 01:52 AM (GMT)
I like IF but IPBFree is my favorite I think. I personally just hate proboards, the look of them and the admin CP. To be an administrator, it's the same. IPBFree, and even IF. Really, the three I've mentioned are the only ones I've ever tried. As I can recall....
.buburuza - February 24, 2008 10:20 AM (GMT)
IF and IPB but the latter has been having so many problems lately it's starting to annoy me.
RomanHk - February 25, 2008 04:14 AM (GMT)
Amen to that. I hope they get their act together soon.
Gowd - February 26, 2008 09:22 AM (GMT)
I use Invision, basically because i think it's easier, though there are a few things i don't like about it... And i agree with the above commant, somtimes my site wont load, or other things just keep going wrong
Meh, i hope they sort it out soon!! :pink:
Avalanche - February 29, 2008 05:04 PM (GMT)
Only invisionfree. Like the visuals and personally, I'm not fond of Proboards in particular.

Eh, there's like 3 other hosts up for discussion besides PB, and IPBFree uses the same software as IF.....
shadowman23 - March 4, 2008 07:29 PM (GMT)
I honestly like to use Proboards. I find the control panel really user friendly and basic. If you have a nice amount of experience with graphics and such, you can even make really pleasant skins! People seem to forget that their are massive Proboards sites which offer free templates and graphics. I also like SMF boards as well. SMF is simply one of the most efficient forum software I've seen so far. Hell, you can even browse through a selection of skins from the admin panel itself. Same thing with mods.
Edit: Lol so far I'm the only one who put "Only Proboards" :D

Hotaru - March 10, 2008 05:07 PM (GMT)
When joining, I usually prefer Proboards. However, I will join an Invisionfree forum if I like the content / idea of it. Normally I like proboards better simply because I think it is more attractive to the eye. But that really just depends on the skin used - IF can have just as nice, and better, skins than Proboards.
As for which I prefer to be an admin at, proboards. I grew up with Proboards, and so its just easier for me. I'm used to everything, I guess.
x3
Starber - March 17, 2008 10:05 PM (GMT)
IF. It`s much better ~IMO than the other hosts.
Kanto Region - April 3, 2008 01:50 PM (GMT)
Invisionfree because I've made a few codes and edited a few with them.
And IPB as they are on of the best bits of software around.
MelonChibi - April 3, 2008 02:26 PM (GMT)
Me? Well I only join Proboards and Invision Free. I prefer InvisionFree though because most of the proboards seem like they're chilidish and that anyone can make it. I prefer invisionfree now because of they're great graphics, Admin Panel and I find it easier to use. If you're a beginner though, I'd go for Probards. I'm fine with being an Admin on either one of these boards though.

same here.
Catastrophe86 - July 21, 2008 07:04 AM (GMT)
I primarily join Invisionfree sites, but I don't really care, as long as it's easy to navigate and the layout doesn't kill my eyes.
rosalieart - July 22, 2008 06:58 PM (GMT)
i prefer to admin an IPBfree board over all others, with IF second, but joining i really couldn't care less.
