Title: Do You Read....?

Roswenth - November 27, 2007 01:13 PM (GMT)
Just wanted to get an idea of how many people read certain authors (using the other thread). That way maybe we can see where there's a hole that roleplays aren't feeding. I intentionally avoided Rowling and Tolkien, because I know there are a lot of RPs about them. I also avoided Gossip Girl, because we've had at least 3 of those just this week.

If you would please, put your top choice of what you'd like to see in an RP board that you've never seen or haven't seen an active one.

You can choose up to 10.

I read a ton of fantasy authors and stuff, but the only ones on that list that I've read are Robert Jordan and Sara Douglass. The Wheel of Time I love and adore (even if after book 6 they've started to really drag for me...I'm stuck on book 9 XD). It's such a rich setting and really makes for a lot of wonderful RP opportunity!

I'd love to see more Wheel of Time RPGs. I just wish there would be some where you could join as a full fledged Aes Sedai from the start instead of all those ridiculous "start from a novice and work your way up!" systems. I'd love to play a novice and go through that process, too (it seems fun!), but...it makes no sense that you couldn't already join a fully developed Aes Sedai with a history and everything behind her.

The Wayfarer's Redemption...>_> I clicked Sara Douglass because I have read that book, but I wouldn't read any others as I loathed it. *cough* And I doubt I'd play in that setting. Eugh.

I tried making a Discworld RP once before and it just didn't work. I had about three members (including me and the other admin) and that was it. No other interest. Which is strange, considering four people have voted on it here...

Gotta say, I have to catch up on my reading! Out of that whole list I've read Stephanie Meyer and that's it. I haven't had much time to read which is so annoying to me!

Unfortunately, comic RPs don't do very well as a general trend, and I'm not really sure why.

I've read Tamora Pierce but I don't think it was the series listed. I can't be sure though, since I can't remember what of hers I've read, just that I have. lol

And I haven't finished the Wayfarer Redemption series. Though I recently got the next two installments or so, but I sent them on to the library without reading them, since I'm working on something else now. They are slow reading.

Another good one is Melanie Rawn and her Sunrunner series. I wish my library had all her books so I could read the story again. I used to want to rp that storyline so bad years ago, but there was no outlet for it. [dies, just dies] Now, if I could read the books again, and I would probably join one... if it had the right kind of players and player maturity.

Roswenth - November 28, 2007 12:21 AM (GMT)
I think all of Pierce's series fall under the heading of Tortall books. It's the name of the land, not the series.

Spty Nain - November 28, 2007 12:31 AM (GMT)
Rosewenth your wrong. Tamora Pierce also writes the circle of magic stuff, which takes place mostly in Emelan. So there. and TP is my favorite out of all of them, though I have yet to see a board that catches my eye

I'm a huge Pratchett fan, but the problem with Discworld RPs, is when canons are involved... they're just not the same. I mean, they REALLY aren't. Which is horrible sad, cause I does love my Discworld.

Meg Cabot also, though that would be a much harder RP to make because the plots are so centralised on a handful of characters. Though, the residence from the Heather Wells mysteries would work okay.

I tried WoT... I really did. Got through to book 4, and wanted to strangle one of the characters myself so bad that I threw the book out the window. Mind you, I did the same with the second last HP book, so it doesn't really say much about my tenacity for reading. I love it, but I have the ability to put a book away and not have it plague me.

I may go back to WoT though, all this talk has made me wonder if maybe I was just being idiotic, I did eventually go back to HP... had to, really. Can't admin a HP-based board without knowing what happened in the end... XD

Ohhh man, Stephanie Meyers books are like...aeoughirutsg, I don't even know. I heart them to deathhh. RPs based on those books never seem to do well, though, probably because the plot is so centralised. Same with Meg Cabot's books.

Clipsed - November 29, 2007 02:12 AM (GMT)
All things Tortall = AMAZING. That being said, from that list I also read Garth Nix, Meg Cabot, Scott Westerfeld, Stephenie Meyer, Terry Pratchett, and Holly Black. Roleplay-wise, I'd gladly jump into a decent Tortall one, any era, and probably a Garth Nix one as well. I have Holly Black covered as it is, and I'm not sure I could really get into the others.

TheFatPoo - November 29, 2007 06:03 AM (GMT)
I'm sad to say that I could never get interested in any of those books long enough to actually read them; so count me as one of the few who don''t. *I'm pathetic* >_<

I am currently reading Pratchett, but have previously read and abhorred, or given up on, both Eddings and Gaiman. The latter should have stuck with comic books, novels do not suit him at all.

Concerning a Discworld RP, I think the problem is that not all have the ability to do Pratchett's vein of satire, and so will have problems RP-ing in his world.

I completely agree with you there. I know I would have trouble keeping it up, which would butcher a Pratchett RP. And make Discworld lovers cry.

Perhaps not that drastic, but it would be much harder than Rowling.

I'm beginning to think I should attempt Tortall, or at least WoT again. I need to read something that doesn't come on a screen.. this is getting ridiculous!

Well out of those, I've read most of Dianna Wynne Jones' books (though admittedly a fair few years ago!), I've just started reading the Wheel of Time series, I'm a HUGE fan of George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, I've read Eddings' Malloreon series (though not for a while!), Inkheart (must get a copy of Inkspell...), and all of Garth Nix's books apart from Ragwitch.

I'm actually part of an RP forum based on Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy... It's quite an interesting one to do, but I've found that you need to keep reminding yourself the names of all the Dead, which means I'm back and forth to my books all the time!

Apart from that... I would love to see an RP based on Diana Wynne-Jones' Chrestomanci series... I know I haven't read them for ages, but they really are good.

Something I would love to see as an RP would be Mary Hoffman's Stravaganza trilogy... Though it suppose it would be better without canons, it could be a good idea if it was worked properly...

phoenx.spice - November 30, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
I've only read three up there. Diana Wynne Jones, Scott Westerfeld and Stephenie Meyer. Love them all, but I think I would only join an Uglies RP. (for loads of reasons but mostly because it would be the easiest to slide into. wouldn't have to be a canon to be played with).
I've been meaning to get my grubby book loving hands on Garth Nix's stuff for a while and people keep poking at me to get Inkheart.

Roswenth - December 18, 2007 04:40 PM (GMT)
I'm surprised we have a lot more Wynne Jones fans than you might think from what we get as RPGs. I've never seen a Chrestomanci-based RPG, and the only Howl-based RPG I have ever seen was mine (quite a long time ago).

Little Mouse - December 18, 2007 05:28 PM (GMT)
I loooooooooooove Neil Gaiman. And Terry Pratchett occasionally. And both of them together in Good Omens = amazingly hilarious.

The only Gaiman work that I can envision translating well into a roleplay is Neverwhere. I mean, the whole London Below society would work wonderfully for original characters in my opinion.

Pastinator - December 18, 2007 08:20 PM (GMT)
I read discworld avidly, and mainly Garth Nix's Abhorsen ( I would be interested in joining an RP based on that, if chars weren't too high power) and I have read a little of David Eddings( The redemption of Althulas, is an epic sized book, but a solid read, with very fun story.)

lemondrops - December 22, 2007 03:27 AM (GMT)
Although I consider myself an avid reader, I've only actually picked up one of the authors you mentioned, and that's Neil Gaiman. I'm absolutely obsessed with Neverwhere, and am currently re-reading Stardust as we speak.
