Title: Phobias
Lenore - October 4, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
I was going to put this in the dabating stage, but it's not a debate really, just a discussion. I was just looking through a phia list to see what my phobias wre called and I got interested.
http://www.phobiaguide.com/My phobias are:
Globophobia (fear of balloons)
Nyctophobia (fear of the dark)
I can't find what fear of eggs is called! lol
I found ones that I thought were interesting though --
Phobophobia - fear of phobias
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - fear of long words
I don't know if the long words one is genuine, but it's certainly funny!
ShinLi - October 4, 2007 02:48 PM (GMT)
I´m happy that I don´t have any phobias XD. There are some weird phobia names that don´t really make sense to me lol. Zoophobia? I wouldn't call that fear of animals, but more fear of zoo's full of animals XD. But yah, that's just me.
Roswenth - October 4, 2007 03:22 PM (GMT)
I'm acrophobic, which is the fear of heights. That also is why I'm afraid of flying. I will fly, but I hate it.
I'm also afraid of roaches, but I don't know what the term is for that.
Lenore - October 4, 2007 03:58 PM (GMT)
Yes...why didnt thy call it Animalphobia? or, the greek word for animal...which could be zoo...it's all very confusing! I think I want to become a Word Maker Upper... XD
I'm okay with heights that are....very very high, but if I step on a ladder, I feel like being sick. odd isn't it?
Roaches...I've never seen a roach before lol.
Still, Earwigs are themost vile thing in existence.
When I was younger, I had a fear of orange...of anything that was the colour orange. Now it had passed, thankfully.
Lothlómendil - October 4, 2007 04:27 PM (GMT)
Thanatophobia or Thantophobia - Fear of death or dying. (sweat)
SpazzyMal - October 4, 2007 06:33 PM (GMT)
Belonephobia - Fear of pins and needles.
I hate needles, or getting my blood taken. It turns me into a bawling little girl. Really.
Aside from that one I didn't see "fear of the seats of roller coasters popping up and you falling out", but I've got that, too. And, unfortunately, I've also had the seat of a roller coaster pop up on me once. Right before a 255ft drop. I got the seat to pop back down, but it still scared the crap out of me, if you can imagine. (surprised)
Detura - October 4, 2007 09:59 PM (GMT)
Bathmophobia Fear of stairs or steep slopes.
Climacophobia Fear of stairs, climbing or of falling downstairs
-Those two kinda go hand in hand.
-I'll go up regular stairs uneasily, but stairs in old houses or with no visible support I can't even climb up.
Caterpillar Phobia
-Can't find the actual name... Hate those things. If I see one near me or get one on me I immediately freak out and start crying.
-I had to live in Louisiana, we had caterpillar season there, not that lovebugs are much better.
Batophobia Fear of heights or being close to high buildings.
-I had to stay the night in a skyscraper once... I was terrified all night that it would just topple over. Miami was not a highlight of my life.
That's all I can think of than the common arachnophobia, and insectophobia. Yups then.
Roswenth - October 5, 2007 03:49 AM (GMT)
Oh! I forgot one! What do you call "the fear of screaming fangirls"? Perhaps "otakuphobia"?
Devin-San - October 6, 2007 03:50 AM (GMT)
Enochlophobia-Crowds
Acrophobia-Heights
Belonephobia-Needles
And whatever it is for crickets... god I hate those little bastards
Carey Moffett - October 6, 2007 08:33 AM (GMT)
Emetophobia - fear of vomiting
i also have a fear of being wrong that is pretty paralysing but that may just be something everyone gets i dunno people dont usually talk about that sort of thing in casual conversation. also a fear of electric shocks. but yes, fear of vomiting. definitely not a phobia. but its there. not as weird as lucy's but weird all the same. fine with blood/insects/needles/death/crowds/heights/wide spaces/enclosed spaces/the dark/rape/murder but afraid of vomiting, getting electric shocks, being wrong and also balloons popping.
Shadow of the Rain - October 6, 2007 09:08 AM (GMT)
Heh, I had a friend who could ramble off, "Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia" like it was nothing. It was really funny to watch others faces when he did that.
Arachnophobia--terribly, terribly afraid of spiders. Ugh, just thinking about them gives me the heeby jeebys and makes me imagine they're crawling on me. I see one on TV at random and I yelp. It's pretty sad...
They don't have fear of alarm systems! I'm really afraid of security alarms going off. I really don't care if there's a reason (break-in or whatever) for it going off, I just don't like the noise! Back home, if I was up late and the system was armed, I would sometimes plug my ears whenever I went under one of the alarm boxes cuz I was scared it would go off when I was right under it. The siren really, truly scares me. But other loud noises don't frighten me. But I was scarred for life by those dumb things, I swear!
Yes, I am aware that the fear is rather funny. I laugh at myself too...unless the system is armed... ^__^;;

Its a genuine phobia, and causes lots of giggles in psych classes. But I have the phobia of Musophobia, the fear of mice.
jinxed13 - October 6, 2007 07:47 PM (GMT)
I happen to be acrophobia as well...I can't stand heights.
I also have a fear of silence...it's so strange they don't even have a word for it! I just can't stand absolute silence, it puts me on edge...
Teslan Luciera™ - October 9, 2007 02:05 AM (GMT)
I'm arachnophobic as well...though I don't get freaked out unless their real and near me (and by near I mean like 100 ft. lol). Though I'll admit I get edgy if there is one on tv.
oh and I don't know what the fear of suspended heights is but I'm that too :p
Don't mind heights unless I look down and there is nothing there. (sweat)
DLR - October 12, 2007 03:01 PM (GMT)
Im acrophobic too. Though I think a lot of people are. Most peopel I know actually...
Taphephobia - Fear of Being buried alive.
:S
...
XD
Kenji - October 13, 2007 02:50 AM (GMT)
^I also fear being buried alive..or being stuck in the middle of the ocean o.O
phoenx.spice - October 23, 2007 05:50 AM (GMT)
Fear of Maggots doesn't have a name. Too bad cause they freak the crap out of me.
Neither does intimacy.
Agraphobia or Contreltophobia.
typing all that out made me feel all naked.
daydream_analysis - October 23, 2007 06:26 AM (GMT)
I have emetophobia, mentioned earlier, a fear of vomiting. Not a "phobia" like 'oh I'm scared of sick ew' but an actual medical one to the point of panic attacks and getting in the way of my effing life. I want it to go away. GO AWAY!
I'm scared of spiders, like most people, but I wouldn't call it a phobia. I'm also scared of moths for some reason, haha. They make disturbing noises at night.
I acutally love heights. I always feel a strange compulsion to jump of my sister's balcony, eleven floors up. Just to see what happens.

I can tell you what'll happen. XD

What is a phobia for kidnappers/robbers?
{little} miss UNIQUE. - October 28, 2007 01:01 PM (GMT)
I have a dentophobia (I think I made up that name) - which means I'm deathly afraid of dentists. ^^ I have to take Xanax to be able to actually sit on the chair and open my mouth.
I also have insectophobia (another made-up name?) - I'm very afraid of bees, wasps, spiders and whatever insect you come up with. I'm always afraid they'll bite me or crawl all over me. Sure, I'm not afraid of spiders that are safely tucked away inside a terrarium, but I hate those that are free. XD
xflybabyx - November 2, 2007 03:59 AM (GMT)
Ok here goes o.O
Arachnophobia: fear of spiders
Aeroacrophobia: Fear of open high places
Aichmophobia Fear of needles or pointed objects.
Bathophobia Fear of depth.
Nyctohylophobia Fear of dark wooded areas, of forests at night LOL
I think that's it for me!
this one made me laugh Papaphobia - Fear of the Pope. XD
Mousie - November 2, 2007 10:58 AM (GMT)
I definitely do not like vomiting - yes, to the point where I'll have panic attacks. The only time it doesn't happen is when I'm drunk. Usually if I'm feeling unwell, I won't eat as some sort of assurance that if I don't eat - I can't vomit. XD
I don't like alarms, I don't like fire drills. Mostly because I have to evacuate the building - it's not really phobic.
I am quite scared of speed - literally being in control of whatever is travelling at great speed (I don't drive for this reason) and I'm also afraid of my own mind to a point.
Blech.
electric.light - November 4, 2007 11:42 PM (GMT)
Aichmophobia; fear of needles or pointed objects.
Specifically syringes, but there wasn't a name for that.
I don't have the slightest problem with tattoo and piercing needles.
They're fine, I actually like them.
But I can't even talk/look at a syringe without freaking out.
Even cartoon ones make me feel sick. It's pretty bad.
Philophobia; fear of falling in love or being in love.
Love, trust, the whole thing.
Gerascophobia; Fear of growing old.
This one is a recent development.
Rejection didn't have a name, but that one's pretty big too.
Well, don't I just feel like a basketcase.
>__<
JennyMcLane - November 14, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
Lets start :)
Apiphobia Fear of bees.
Arachnephobia or Arachnophobia Fear of spiders.
Contreltophobia Fear of sexual abuse.
Insectophobia Fear of insects.
Isopterophobia Fear of termites, insects that eat wood.
Scoleciphobia Fear of worms.
Spheksophobia Fear of wasps.
In short: animals without feet or more then 4 feet - panic :) In my room i kill the insects - the most times my cat catches the insects and eat hem :)
littleman1280 - November 14, 2007 11:17 PM (GMT)
Acrophobia - Fear of heights.
I HATE HEIGHTS. Like seriously, if I can to high (not in that way), I'll start having a panic attack. As long as I know I'm safe and don't look over the ledge of something tall, I should be fine. It's a horrible fear and keeps me away from rollercoasters and flying in planes.
Kalisha - November 16, 2007 07:25 PM (GMT)
Clowns, definetely, theyre creepy and freaky.
Lici - November 17, 2007 12:41 PM (GMT)
Pyrophobia - fear of fire - and all that entails! I can't go to fireworks displays thanks to the little kids running around with sparklers, I can't light candles, I can't hold a candle, and I most certainly could never smoke as I can't light a match!
Fear of loud noises - It scares the life out of me, but I'm a nautrally jumpy person anyway so it makes sense. Don't like fireworks, balloons, gunshots (not good when you help at a Girl Guide unit that goes rifle shooting), or anything like that.
Fear of heights - well...I'm okay with heights, as long as there's not a seethrough ceiling beneath me and there's something to hold on to. I went up to the whispering gallery at St Pauls Cathedral with my mum (who's scared of heights too!) and she had to take me downstairs after we'd only done one walkaround, lol. The floor was worn where people had walked, it was an old building so I wasn't sure I trusted the damn thing to support me, and everytime I looked up, I seemed to wobble backwards a bit, and I was shit scared I was going to fall.
When I went up to the Eiffel Tower, that was petrifying. We walked - why nobody let me take the lift, I dunno - and it was wobbling, and there was only wire mesh stuff holding us in, and I felt like I was going to pass out just from the fear of falling from this stupid place.
Fear of the dark - childish, I know, but I hate, hate, hate being out in the dark on my own, without a light and when it's near Hallowe'en. I'm too superstitious and my mind plays tricks on me too much to even risk it.
Arachnophobia, and insectophobia, also. Anything with more than 4 legs is unnatural and scary.
Fear of birds flying around my head - the amount of times I've been attacked by birds, it's impossible not to be scared of them. I've been attacked by pigeons in Trafalgar Square, pigeons in my local park, lovebirds in my step-dad's aviary and geese frequently. Oh, and a swan, on holiday once.
I think that's all for now. ^.^
Ričle - November 17, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
I don't like volcanoes. Couldn't ever go near one if I wanted to, and I hate watching movies about them. I couldn't sleep for days after watching Dante's Peak. But I suppose that's a healthy thing to be afraid of?
Also, I don't like insects. Well, big ones... if it's a little moth the size of my fingernail it's not so bad. But when I'm wearing a headlamp and night and big moths are flying at my face I just want to flee in terror. Also, when I was gecko-sitting for my friend and a few crickets got loose, I didn't want to touch them to get them back. I just found tupperware containers and caught them underneath, then weighted them down with something until she got back. So she found upside-down tupperware containers all over her floor, each with a cricket underneath ^_^
Is it weird that I'm afraid of little harmless bugs but that I pick up lizards and snakes all the time?
I have a moderate fear of heights, but it's not too bad. I still go rock climbing!
Lici - November 18, 2007 10:39 PM (GMT)
Not weird about the bugs v snakes thing. I love snakes, but I'm scared of insects - for most people, it's the other way around!
Anyway, going back to the list. I'm phobic about dentists. I know it's probably psychological due to my first dentist buggering up my first filling TWICE, but since then, they've just scared the living BEJEEZUS out of me. Not good when you need to have braces, eh?
I'm scared of failure. Pretty similar to Hermione Granger in POA, actually. I think if I had a boggart, it would be someone telling me I'm a failure, blahblahblah.
I'm not scared of dying, strangely, or being attacked, but that's cause I know I have a scream like no man's business, and nobody would ever come near me. Still, what I am scared of is falling down stairs, getting trapped anywhere (even if it's just a toilet cubicle, lol) and I'm scared of fish.
How much of a nutjob am I?
XD
Rhi-Rhi - November 19, 2007 08:31 AM (GMT)
I have some bizarre ones. >_>
+ Veins. I'm not afraid of needles, of pain, of blood, it's just the VEINS that scare and disgust me. I look at veins, and I get this awful twisting sensation in my gut that makes me squirm and just...ugh. What's even more pathetic? I actually almost FAINTED once. Why did I faint? My mom and a pharmacist were discussing blood clots, and the pharmacist went into detail about the whole...vein system. Ahem. I still don't know why it affected me so much, but I had to go sit down because everything started getting foggy and dark, everything started to sound distant, I felt horribly nauseous, my body went ice cold yet sweaty and I found it hard to breathe, and then my hearing actually blanked out--I went deaf for a few seconds. ^^; I've fainted before, so I know the warning signs, but I managed to pull out of it. It was pretty embarrassing.
+ My heartbeat/pulse. I HATE the feeling of my own heartbeat and pulse, and the heartbeat/pulse of other people. *twitch* It freaks me out. And if I'm sleeping and can feel my own heartbeat, I have to shift around until I no longer can. Ahem.
+ Being grabbed by the ankles and pulled under my bed. It's a completely irrational fear, but it's there. At night, once I turn off my light I literally LEAP onto my bed from a safe distance because...uh...something might grab my ankles. >_> It's sad because I'm 23 and this fear is so stupid. *laughs*
+ Zombies. Another stupid one, but they scare the shiat out of me. And people making zombie-like moaning sounds gives me unpleasant chills and goosebumps. Yes, they're not real, but I can't stand them...it's the whole idea of the dead being brought back to life and going on mindless killing rampages it's just...eugh.
+ Alien abductions. Now, I believe aliens are benevolent and all, but those shows about alien abductions scare me so much. *twitch* Then again, I was sorta scarred at a young age. Ahem.
+ Tornados and wind. I was in a tornado once, minor one that missed us but still. Ever since, I've been terrified of them and certain types of wind. >_> I have lotsa nightmares about tornados (even if they fascinate me) and for some reason, yes, as a result certain types of wind makes me uneasy. It's hard to explain. Primarily it's only if I'm in the desert. It's barren, lonely out there, wide open spaces with lots of flat land, and the wind gets really intense and actually makes the house creak and shake. When this happens, I find it very hard to sleep. It's only ever worse if, on top of it all, it's cloudy or, even worse, there's a thunder storm. That makes me a nervous wreck.
I think my most normal phobia is a fear of heights. XD Man I sound like a nutjob.
ofadmin - November 19, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
^^I don't think those make you sound like you are a nut job. I have irrational fears to.
1.Someone coming into my house and shooting/stabbing me to death after making me watch my families brutal murders.
2.Not having any doors. I hate completely closed spaces, but I HAVE to have a door that locks.
3.Cows. I HATE THEM!!!! They are so scary. I hate how big they are and how they will come and trample me any moment. I is kind of weird, because I have rode on a elephant before, and I loved it.
4.Heights, and really small, closed, dark places. I hate both of those. They creep me out.
I also have to sleep with SOMETHING on my bed besides the traditional blankets pillows thing. My cat normally does, but on the occasions that he sleeps in my parents room I have to sleep with my huge stuffed panda. I am 14 and do that. None of my bestest friends even know that. I am actually ashamed of it, but I think that it will keep me safe.
Lenore - November 19, 2007 11:04 PM (GMT)
It's interesting to see what phobias people have. I have a lot of friends who have weird ones, the normal ones and the crazy ones (apparently I'm weird because of my balloon phobia pffft). I have developed a fear of Swans. They just have long snakey legs and you know that they have the devil in thier eyes when they look at you with those black beady eyes of theirs. They are so shifty and evil >.>
xxcallieeexx - November 22, 2007 07:25 AM (GMT)
I have a really irrational fear of the dark. I get freaked out when I'm in my bedroom with the blinds closed and my door shut at three in the afternoon, when it's perfectly light out. Why? I'm not sure. Also, when I was little, I used to run from the basement to the staircase because you know, monsters do hide in the dark corners of the laundry room. >.<
I'm also really freaked out by mice. I'm not sure why, but I just am. We had mice a few months ago, and I saw it run across the floor and I was shaking and sweating for like, an hour.
And, this is the weirdest. Bowling alleys. Ever since I saw Constantine, I think there are demons in the back parts of bowling alleys and when my bowling ball doesn't come back, oh boyyy, I think that it's going to come out with some demon attached. Haha, wow, I never realized how weird that was until I wrote it. XD
shadowman23 - November 22, 2007 12:22 PM (GMT)
My Phobias would have to be...
Spiders - Sure, arachnophobia is one of the most common ones out there, but with me, I react a little differently. Everytime I see a spider, I have this insane rage in my head that makes me want to kill it, since I think it's going to kill me....I dunno...I guess you could call it the "flight or fight" response XD
Hippotomonstrosoquippedaliophobia - Ironically....the fear of long words
Captin' [obvious - November 22, 2007 11:50 PM (GMT)
1. Drowning: I can swim well enough, but I have a wicked bad habit of swimming quite a ways then trying to touch the bottom (especially in murky water) and if I can't scrape my toes to the bottom of the lake/pool/river/etc. I start to get a bit panicky. I won't even go swimming in an ocean because I'm a afraid of the undertow and being carried away.
2. Clowns: Yeah, I blame Stephen King 110% for this one. You try seeing It when you're five years old and not being emotionally scarred. That and the fact that I seem to think that there's something psychologically wrong with a man who wears flamboyant clothing and wears wicked strange colors of make-up
3. Geese: Not only are they evil, my grandfather has a farm and they're aggressive as hell. Try walking up to the barn and having five or six gray geese chase you back to the house.
antisocialist87 - November 23, 2007 02:26 AM (GMT)
Tornados are horrifying, even though it's a phobia that I'm gradually getting over. When you live in a place that gets tornado activity a bit too much, you kinda get used to it.
I also had a phobia of spiders, though I kill so many of them now that I generally don't really worry about it. My phobia are INSECTS THAT FLY.
ThatOneGuy - November 23, 2007 04:41 AM (GMT)
They don't have mine..
But I am basically afraid of boredom.
Besides, boredom leads to an inevitable lost of sanity, and the lack of sanity... Well, I doubt I need to paint a brighter picture. ^_^`

I'm pretty sure I have that as well. I just got three shots yesterday, and I almost started crying when they brought the needles into the room. I felt like such an idiot, considering I'm seventeen, and the three year old in the room next to me got four shots and wasn't even crying. =/
dark_moon_87 - November 26, 2007 01:11 AM (GMT)
Here's a tweaky one; the fears of bees/hornets. I am absolutely terrified, I used to almost hyperventilate if one was what.. three feet away? And the therapist gave me a bee in a jar to put next to my bed. XD DIdn't help.
I'm also afraid of mosquito eaters. o.O
I know someone with the fear of the moon, it's awesome and ironic because I've stared at the moon for 3 hours straight, it's so pretty and round. <33
